HOPEWELL CEMETERY

Located in Franklin Township, Floyd County, Indiana.

The cemetery and log church was there before 1837 when the deed was recorded. Little Phebe LaFollette was buried there in 1817.
The old log church with its hugh logs, was standing as late as 1929 or early 1930 when Mrs. William Lafollette visited the cemetery.
It was being used and in seemingly good condition then. It was destroyed by fire of unknown origin.
I visited the cemetery in 2004 and it was over grown with weeds and headstones had been broken and piled one on top of the other.
Vandals had spray painted most of the headstones and I just wanted to cry. I had traveled so far to see the resting place of my ancestors
and to see what had been done to the cemetery was so heart breaking.
The land for the cemetery had been given to the people by my Great-Great-Great Grandparents Robert LaFollette and Martha Sampson LaFollette
