This county was named in honor of the distinguished
Benjamin Franklin. The northeast portion is level, the central and western portions rolling, and in many places
quite hilly. The timber, which was originally plenty, consists of oak, sugar, beech, hickory and black walnut.
The soil is generally good. A considerable portion of the county is bottom land, lying along White river and it
branches. These bottoms are, as usual, a very rich soil, well adapted to the growth of corn. The uplands are better
adapted to the growth of wheat and grass. The farming interests of the county are fully up to those of other counties
in the State. This county has some interesting antiquarian features. There are numerous mounds of earth and structures
of stone, imbedded in the earth, and prepared with apparent skill, so that the deposits of some very distant period
are found in a remarkable state of preservation. Franklin county has all the natural elements for success, and
is rapidly increasing in population and wealth.
Brookville, the county seat, is located on the Whitewater division of the Indianapolis, Cincinnati and La Fayette
Railway. It is an enterprising, educational town, rapidly increasing in population, wealth and importance.
The major cities and towns of Franklin County are Batesville, Brookville, Cedar Grove, Laurel, Mount Carmel and
Oldenburg Franklin County was made effective February 1, 1811. Franklin County was the sixth county
formed and was taken from Dearborn and Clark Counties in conformity with the legislative act of November 27, 1810.
The additional organization of Fayette and Union counties in 1819 and 1821 greatly reduced the area of Franklin
County.
Brookville is the County Seat. Named after Jesse Brook Thomas,
the original proprietor, it was first settled in 1804 by Lismund Bayse, James Knight, Robert Breckenridge, John
Test and Amos Butler, and by 1849 had a population of about 1,200.
