BREEDEN BURYING GROUND

(a.k.a. Breeden Cemetery)

Harrison Township (former Scott Twp.) Harrison County, Indiana

Submitted by Kevin Conrad

The Breeden Burying Ground, otherwise known as the Breeden Cemetery, is about 10 miles west of Corydon and is situated in the Harrison County State Forest, in the Northeast ¼ of Section 10, Township 4 South, Range 2 East, of Harrison Township (former Scott Twp.), in Harrison County, Indiana. The cemetery is located 1.8 miles from the main gate of the State forest. This old cemetery, located along a narrow gravel road off Potato Run Cemetery Road, is located about 200 hundred yards south from the Potato Run United Brethren Church (est. 1886) and cemetery. This church and cemetery is located on the north end of the gravel road, where it dead-ends.  The coordinates for this cemetery are as follows: USGS Quad: Leavenworth (IN,KY) Topo; UTM 16 562383E  4226337N (NAD27); Latitude: 38° 11' 05" N,  Longitude: 86° 17' 16" W.

On October 13-14, 2005, my wife and I surveyed this cemetery, which included photographing each gravestone and recording grave site information. This cemetery is in very poor condition and contains many broken and missing headstones. The full record, including photographs, of our work is on file at the Frederick Porter Griffin Center for Local History and Genealogy, 117 West Beaver Street, Corydon, Indiana, 47112. An earlier survey was conducted at this cemetery by Frederick P. Griffin and Samuel P. Hays, on December 17, 1939. A copy of the 1939 survey is included after the 2005 survey. In addition, a copy of their work is also on file at the above library.

Headstone Inscriptions

In this record, row 1 is the farthest row to the west of the cemetery (the row parallel with the gravel road). The first grave in row 1 is located at the north-west corner of the cemetery. Information on each grave and position of grave stones was recorded beginning at the north end of a row; working to the south end. This method of recording was repeated for each row; ending with the last row to the east of the cemetery. Hence: the first grave of row one is located at the northwest corner of the cemetery and the last grave in (#92) in row 6 is located at the southeast corner of the cemetery.
