DETRICK FAMILY BURIAL GROUND

Posey Township, Harrison County, Indiana

Submitted by Kevin Conrad, HCCRT Historian

The Detrick family burial ground, also known as the Detrick Cemetery, is located in the NW ¼ of the NW ¼, of Section 8, Township 5 South, Range 5 East, in Posey Township of Harrison County, Indiana. It is situated about two miles southwest from the town of Elizabeth on a high knoll southeast from the intersection of Deatrick Road (to the east) and Depauw Church Road (to the north). The cemetery, which is located on private property, is accessible from Deatrick Road.

The Detrick family burial ground contains approximately sixty-five (65) graves, although the actual number is likely higher. The cemetery’s earliest known burial occurred following the death of Richard Turner, son of Henry Turner and Sarah Detrick, on 18 August 1827. Another infant of the Turner family is also known to have been buried at this cemetery sometime prior to the death of Peter Detrick Sr. in 1832, but the date of death is unknown. This burial ground may have received burials prior to 1827, but this cannot be validated due to the lack of records. The last burial occurred in 1914.

The rows within the cemetery primarily run in a north and south direction. As a result of the physical damage caused to the cemetery, the exact numbers of rows cannot be determined. Upon close examination and careful study, it appears there are approximately ten (10) rows. A permanent wooden fence was erected around the cemetery in 2006. The new fence-line is not perpendicular with the rows within the cemetery, rather the rows run diagonally (almost corner to corner) with respect to the fence-line. As a result, today if one would quickly scan the layout of the grave markers, it has the appearance the graves were randomly laid.

The surnames found at this cemetery are: Deatrick; Krown; Paddock and Paddocks; Shreck; and Turner.

Prior to the cemetery restoration project, which began in 2005, Detrick cemetery was virtually destroyed by neglect and the grazing of horses. Because the graveyard lacked a protective barrier, livestock was allowed to intermingle among the stone makers, this resulted in a number of stone markers being knocked over and broken under the weight of the animals.

In July 2005 and after receiving approval from the State of Indiana, a small group of volunteers known as the Harrison County Cemetery Restoration Team (HCCRT) began the process of restoring this cemetery. The restoration project included, but not limited to: photographing and recording gravestone information; cleaning; repairing; and resetting grave markers. This activity was completed on 16 September 2006. The Detrick Family Burial Ground is officially classified as an historical cemetery and is listed in the Indiana’s Cemetery and Burial Grounds Registry with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
