Indenture 1,
Overseers of the Poor , to Archibald Boston }Indenture

This indenture made and entered into this 12th of November, 1853 between William H. Dayton , John U. Kimbred and Abner C. Kirthley, Overseers of the Poor of Blue River Township, Harrison Co. IN. of the first part and Archibald Boston of the second part, witnessed that the said party of the first part, do bind to the part of the second part, one Anderson Boston, a pauper of the above named Township, aged 10 yrs. the 24th of June last, said Anderson is without Father Mother or Guardian, son of Josiah Boston, deceased, to serve and an apprentice until he is 21 years of age, at farming or any ordinary work, the said party of the second part doth covenant and agree with said party of the first part, that he will board, and do the said boy comfortably  and respectably and have him taught reading, writing and arithmetic so far as the double rule of 3 inclusive  and give him $25.00 in cash at the expiration of his apprenticeship and pay all necessary expenses for the health and comfort of said boy.

Indenture, 2 
Henry Burton to Joseph D. Ott

Henry Burton aged 15 yrs in may 1854, binds himself  to work and labor for Joseph D. Ott, at the farming business and such other common work as the said Joseph D. Ott  may want him to work at until he is 21 yrs of age. And the said Joseph D. Ott  binds himself his heirs and administrators and Executors to care for the welfare and watch over . nurse and take care in sickness and health and pay all necessary expenses of the said Henry Burton and to cause him to be instructed and learn to read and taught the rules of  Arithmetic as far as the double rule of 3 inclusive, and clothe him in a good comfortable and respectable manner and when he is 21 yrs old give him a good horse, bridle and saddle and pay him $50. the said Henry Burton has neither father or mother alive and has no Guardian but he here gives  his consent to this Indenture.
This 10th of  December 1853.

Indenture  3,
Overseers of the Poor of M. T to David Byerly


This indenture made this 18th of Feb. 1854, between Elijah Dewees (?) , Joseph M. Ellis & Robert W. Finley Trustees of  Morgan Township, Harrison Co. IN., and Overseers of the Poor by virtue thereof of the one part and David Byerly of the county aforesaid of the other part. Witnessed that the said Overseers have put, placed and bound  do by these presents put, place and bind William Grey a poor boy aged 10 yrs and 6 months old an Apprentice to the said David Byerly to be taught the trade and occupation of a farmer, which the said David Byerly now uses and to live with and serve him the said David Byerly as an apprentice for the term of 10 yrs and 6 months from this date, that is to say until the said William  Grey shall arrive to the age of 21 yrs, if the said David Byerly shall so long live, and the said Overseers do by these presents, give unto the said David Byerly all the right power and authority over the said William Grey and  his service during the said term which by the laws of this State, a master had in and over a lawful indentured apprentice, and the said David Byerly  is consideration thereof doth on his part covenant, promises and agree to and with the said Overseers and their successors in office and each and every one of them and with the said David Byerly that he will teach and instruct him the said William Grey as an apprentice or cause him to be well and sufficiently taught and instructed to read and write and the rules of  Arithmetic to the double rule of 3, if practicable and train him to habits of  industry and morality and during the term of  his apprenticeship to provide and allow to him sufficient meat, drink , washing, lodging and apparel and all other things necessary for an apprentice during his said of apprenticeship, and the said David Byerly  further covenants and agrees to furnish and give the said Apprentice at  the expiration of  his aforesaid term of service 1 new suit of  wearing apparel worth at least $25 with a sufficiency of common wearing apparel, also a good horse, bridle and saddle to be worth at least $100.
In witness whereof the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this  day and year above written.

Indenture 4,   
Eli T.G. Pfrimmer to John Nets (?) } Indenture


This indenture witnessed that Eli T.G. Pfrimmer , guardian to Phillip Eurstine of Harrison County, IN. has put, placed and does put and bind out his said Ward Phillip Eurstine as an apprentice to John  Nets to learn the art and business of a farmer, which said nets now uses, The said Phillip Eurstine to dwell and serve said John Nets, after the manner of an apprentice from this date until the 8th of  March 1866, at which time said apprentice is to well and faithfully serve his said master, obey his lawful commands, keep his secrets, do him no damage, nor willfully suffer any to be done. Said apprentice shall not contract matrimony during his said term, shall play at no unlawful game nor frequent tippling houses, nor shall he absent himself from the service of his master, but behave himself as a faithful apprentice ought during his term of service, and the said John Nets on his part hereby covenants, promises and agrees to teach and instruct or cause to be taught and instructed the said apprentice to read, write and the rules of arithmetic to the double rule of 3, if said apprentice be capable to learn, and that he will send said apprentice to school for at least 20 months during said term, even should he sooner be instructed as above stated. Said John Nets also binds himself to teach and instruct said apprentice in the art and trade of  a farmer in the best manner he can and to provide for said apprentice good and sufficient meat, drink, clothing, lodging and other necessaries, fit and convenient for such an apprentice during said term, and at the expiration thereof shall give unto said apprentice 1 Sunday suit of clothes of the value of  $15 and other suitable clothes for working days .
In testimony whereof  said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this 21st of April 1854.

Indenture 5
Jacob G. Teaford to Warford Hickman}Indenture


This Indenture made this 1st of April 1854 between Jacob G. Teaford , Guardian of Andrew Ross   aged 15 yrs. the 8th of March 1854, and said Andrew Ross of the first part and Warford Hickman of the other part. Witnessed  that said Teaford as such Guardian by and with the consent of Andrew Ross hath place and as an apprentice put said Andrew to said Warford Hickman for and during the term of 3 yrs from and after the 20th of March 1854 and as such to serve and obey him and in all reasonable and proper orders to assist and obey him to learn the business and trade of farming, and Agriculture which trade or calling he said  Warford Hickman undertakes to instruct and teach him said Andrew as fully as may be in his power within the time, said Warford Hickman shall also board, clothe, pay his Physicians bills, and for his washing and shall give him within said time 6 months schooling and at the end of his term will give him a good freedom suit of clothes .

Indenture  6
Trustees of Boone Township to D.W.Bell

Indenture of Apprenticeship  between the Trustees of Boone Township, Harrison County, IN. and David W. Bell and Isaac Brown. Witnessed that the said Isaac Brown aged 13 yrs. about the 1st of October 1854, by and with the consent of the said Trustees hath and doth hereby bind himself as and apprentice unto the said David W. Bell until the 1st of October 1862, from the date hereof to learn the trade and occupation of a farmer. And the said Isaac Brown by the said Trustees doth hereby covenant with the said David W. Bell to faithfully serve him and correctly _____ himself during the term of his apprenticeship.
And the said David W. Bell doth hereby covenant with said Trustees and Isaac Brown and each of them that he will teach the said Isaac Brown the said trade and occupation of farming and will provide him during said apprenticeship with meat, lodging, medicine, washing clothing and all other necessaries suitable for an apprenticeship, and at the expiration of said term of service will furnish the said Isaac Brown with a new Bible at least 2 suits of common wearing apparel and $100 in money.
In testimony whereof the parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this 27th of  January 1855.

Indenture 7,
Overseers of the Poor to George Trannum


This Indenture made this 26th of June 1855, between Robert Kirkham and Tandy Shoemaker and David Melton Overseers of the Poor of Webster Township, Harrison County, IN. of the first part and George Trannum of the county & state aforesaid of the other part. Witnessed that the said Overseers of the Poor have placed and bound and do by these presents put, place and bind John Quick and William Quick 2 poor boys aged 5 and 3 yrs old to live with and serve him the said George Trannum as apprentices in farming business for the term of the said John Quick sixteen years and William Quick for 18 yrs, that is until they each reach of age of 21 yrs. of age if the said George Trannum shall so long live the said overseers do by these presents  give unto the said George Trannum all the right power and authority  over the said John Quick & William Quick and their services during the said term which by the laws of this state which a master has over a lawful indentured apprentice and the said George Trannum in consideration thereof doth on his part promise and agree to and with the said Overseers, and their successors in office and each and every of them, and with the said John Quick & William Quick he will teach and instruct the said boys in the art of farmers or cause it to be done after the best way and manner he can, and also to teach and instruct them or cause them to be taught to read, write and cipher as far as the single rule of 3, and train them to habits of morality and industry and during the term of their services to provide and allow them sufficient meat, drink, lodging, and apparel and all other things necessary for their comfort during their said term of  service, and the said George Trannum for the covenant and agree to give each of said boys at the expiration of their aforesaid term  of services 2 suits of everyday clothes and 1 suit of respectable fine cloth, also to each  a horse, saddle and bridle worth $75 in cash or that amount in cash or equal to that in both.

Overseers of the Poor to W.M. Saffer .

This indenture made this 28th of July 1855 between Robert Kirkham and David Melton 2 overseers of the Poor of Webster Township, Harrison County IN. of the first part and William M. Saffer of the county and state aforesaid of the second part. Witnessed that the said Overseers have put, placed and bound and do by these presents put, place and bind Sylvester Rogers a poor boy of 14 yrs. old to live with and to serve him the said William M. Saffer for the term of 7 yrs, that is until he becomes to be 21 yrs of age, if the said William M. Saffer shall so long live, and the Overseers do by these presents give unto William M. Saffer for all the right power and authority over the  said Sylvester Rogers and his services during the said term, which by the laws of this state, which a master has over a lawful Indentured apprentice and the said William M. Saffer  in consideration thereof  doth on his part promises and agrees to and every of them the said Overseers and their successors in office and each and every of them and with the said Sylvester Rogers he will keep him in good comfortable clothes and sufficient drink and lodging so as to keep him comfortable.
In witness whereof, the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this 28th of July 1855.

Overseers of the Poor to George Albin


This Indenture made this 7th of July 1855 between Robert Kirkham &  David Melton the overseers of the Poor of Webster County, Harrison Co. IN. of the first part and George Albin  of the county & state aforesaid of the other part. Witnessed that the said Overseers have put, placed and bound and do by these presents put, placed and bind Isaac Thornberg Stephens, a poor boy aged 6 yrs old to live with and to serve him the said George Albin as an apprentice in farming business for the term of  15 yrs., that is until he becomes the age of 21 yrs., if the said George Albin , shall so long live and the said overseers do by these presents give unto the said George Albin all the rights, power and authority over the said Isaac Thornberg Stephens, and his services during the said term, which by the laws of this state, which the master has over a lawful indentured apprentice. And the said George Albin in consideration thereof doth on his part promises and agrees to and with the Overseers and their successors in office and each and every of them and with the said Isaac Thornberg Stephens, he will teach and instruct the said boy on the arts of farming or cause it to be taught after the best manner he can and also to send him 9 months to school and train him to habits of industry and morality and during the term of his servitude to provide and allow him sufficient meat, drink, lodging and apparel and all other things necessary for his comfort during his said term of service. And the said George Albin further covenants and agrees to and give said boy at the expiration of his aforesaid term of service 2 suits of good every day clothes, also 1 suit of fine cloth clothes, also 1 horse, saddle & bridle worth $75 or equal to that in horse , saddle and bridle in cash.
In witness whereof, the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this 7th of July 1855.

Rachel Brewer to Isaac Meek


This indenture made the 2nd of August, 1855 between Rachel  Brewer or formerly Rachel Meek of Harrison Co. IN. of one part and Isaac Meek of county and state aforesaid. Witnessed that the said  Rachel Brewer doth by these presents put, place and bind her son Richard Edward Meek age 5 yrs old to Isaac Meek to learn the art of farming, which he the said Isaac Meek uses and the said Rachel Brewer doth agree that the said Richard Edward Meek, her son, shall live with and serve the said Isaac Meek until he arrives at the age of 21 yrs., which will be the 27th of June 1871, and the said Isaac Meek doth on his part agree to and with said Rachel Brewer that he will teach or cause to be taught to the said Richard E. Meek, to read, write, and to understand Arithmetic to the double rule of 3 , inclusive, if the said Richard E. Meek be capable to learn, and also that he will provide for the said R.E.Meek good and sufficient meat, drink, lodging and clothing during said term, and at the expiration thereof to give to the said Richard E. Meek 2 good suits of clothing.

Indenture  11
John V. Grant to Isaac B. Davis


This indenture made this 8th of Sept. 1855 between John V. Grant of New Albany, Floyd County, IN. of the first part  & Isaac B. Davis of Harrison Co. IN.of the second part.
Witnessed that for and in consideration of the sum of $1.00 in hand paid to the said Grant by the said Davis, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged by the said Grant, The said Grant given and adopted and bound his infant male child by the name of James, which was born on the 10th  of June 1855,  as an adopted son and apprentice to the farming business to the said Isaac B. Davis until he arrives to the age of  21 yrs old to exercise all authority over said apprenticed child that a father has a right by law to exercise over his children, the said Isaac b. Davis doth agree to take and receive the said infant child James as his own adopted child and bound apprentice and furnish him with a good nursing when sick, medical aid , wholesome meats, drink and wearing apparel and give him good common school education and instruct him in the farming business and if the said James remains with this said Davis until he is 21 yrs of age, the said Davis agrees to give him a horse, bridle and saddle and a good suit of clothes, and the said Grant doth hereby agree to give up to the said Isaac B. Davis all his paternal authority whatsoever over said child.

Indenture  12,
Michael Byerly to U.H. Hon


This indenture witnessed that Michael Byerly of Harrison Co. IN. hath put and placed and by these presents doth put, place and bind out his daughter Nancy Ann Byerly, minor of the age of 5 yrs and 3 months as an apprentice to U.H. Hon to learn the art, trade and mystery of housewifery, which the said U.H. Hon now uses. The said Nancy Ann Byerly to dwell with and serve the said U.H. Hon after the manner of an apprentice from the date hereof until the 1st of Sept. 1868, at which time the said apprentice if she shall be living will be 18 yrs of age, during all which time the said apprentice shall well and faithfully serve the said master, keep his secrets and every where at all times readily obey his lawful commands, she shall do no damage to her said master, nor willfully suffer any to be done by others to her knowledge during the whole time, and the said U.H. Hon on his part doth hereby covenant and agree to teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause her to be taught to read, write and cipher to double rule of 3, inclusive, and during the whole time to furnish meats, drink, clothing, and lodging and other necessaries fit and convenient for such an apprentice, and at the time of the expiration of such time shall give unto said apprentice, 1 cow, and calf, 1 good bed and bedding, and 2 suits of clothing, such as is customary in the neighborhood and necessary cooking utensils such as is necessary for housekeeping.
In testimony whereof, the said parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this 8th of Dec. 1855.

Indenture 13.  
Trustee of Heth to James Rowzee



This indenture made this 16th of Jan. 1856. Witnessed that Overseers of the Poor Jacob Stockslager, John Lopp, & James Current the Trustees of Heth Township, Harrison Co. IN. Acting as overseers of the poor of said Township as directed by law, hath put, placed Montgomery Harris, a poor Orphan, and by these presents in the Trustees aforesaid doth put, bind the said Montgomery Harris as and apprentice to James Rowzee to learn the art, trade and mystery of farming in the best way and manner he can which the said Rowzee now uses. The said  (blank) to well hereby serve the said Montgomery Harris after the manner of an apprentice from the day of the date hereof until the 13th of  May 1864, at which time the said apprentice if living will be 21 yrs of age, during all of which time, the said apprentice shall well and faithfully serve said master, keep his secrets , and in every where and at all times readily obey his lawful commands and the said Rowzee  on his part doth covenant and agree to teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause him to be instructed to read, write and cipher as far as the double rule of 3, if practicable,  and well and faithfully to find and provide for the said apprentice good and sufficient boarding, clothing and lodging and other necessaries fit and convenient  for such an apprentice during the term aforesaid, at the expiration thereof shall give to the said apprentice $100 and 1 suit of clothing worth $20.

Indenture 14.    
Mark Gregory to Joseph Charley


Article of agreement, made and entered into on this 14th of June 1856 between Mark Gregory and Joseph Charley.  Witnessed that the said  Gregory hereby bind his daughter, Rebecca Gregory as an apprentice to the said Joseph Charley, to be taught the ordinary duties of housewifery, such as commonly practiced in the country the said Rebecca being now 7 yrs old the 27th of May,last past, is to live with the family of the said Joseph Charley and serve him in such capacity until she arrives at the age of 18 yrs. and the said charley obligates himself to teach or have taught to the said Rebecca the art, and mystery of housewifery as aforesaid, and to board and clothe her in a manner suitable to her station. Also to teach or have her taught to read, write and the rules of Arithmetic as far as the double rule of 3, if the same be practicable, and at the expiration of said term of apprenticeship said Charley is to give said Rebecca,  1 ordinary cow, 1 bed and bedding, and a suit of fashionable clothes suitable for a girl of her condition.

This indenture made this 10th of July 1856 between Conrad F. Hottell, Phillip Zinor & Nathaniel Elliott, Overseers of the Poor of Harrison Township, Harrison Co. IN.
Of the one part and Alfred Williams of the county aforesaid of the other part. Witnessed that the said Overseers have put, placed & bound and do by these presents put, place and bind Mary Ellen Davis, a poor girl of about 12 yrs and 6 months old, and with neither Father nor Mother, no Guardian and having no sufficient mans of support,  and education as an apprentice to the said Alfred Williams to be taught the art and occupation of housewifery, and to live with and serve him, the said Alfred Williams, as an apprentice for the term of 5 yrs and 6 months from this date, that is until she arrives at the age of 18 yrs., if the said Alfred Williams shall so long live, and the said Overseers do by these presents give unto the said Alfred Williams all the right, power and authority over the said Mary Ellen Davis and her service, during the said term, which by the laws of this state a master has in over a lawful indentured apprentice. And the said Alfred Williams in consideration thereof doth on his part covenant, promises and agrees to and with the said Overseers and their successors in office, and each and every of them and with the said Mary Ellen Davis that he will teach and instruct the said Mary Ellen Davis as his apprentice or cause her to be well and sufficiently  taught  and instructed in the art and occupation of housewifery after the best way and manner that  he can, and also to teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause her to be taught and instructed to read and write and the rule of Arithmetic to the double rule of 3, inclusive, if practicable and train her to habits of industry and morality and during her term of apprenticeship to provide and allow her sufficient meat, drink washing, lodging and apparel and all things necessary for an apprentice during her said term of apprenticeship.

Cassy Ann Wolfe to David Pitman.


This indenture witnessed that Cassy Ann Wolfe, mother of Sarah Catherine Huntsinger of Harrison Co. IN. has put, placed and by these presents doth put, place and bind her said daughter Sarah Catherine Huntsinger  to David Pitman to learn the art and mystery of a housewife. The said Sarah Catherine to dwell with and serve said David Pitman after the manner of an apprentice from this date until the 6th of Nov. 1868, at which time the said Sarah Catherine if living will be 18 yrs of age, during all of which the said Sarah Catherine is to well and faithfully serve her said master, keep his secrets, obey his lawful commands and do no damage to her master, nor willfully to suffer any to be done. Said Sarah Catherine is not to absent herself from the service of her master, but at all times behave herself as a faithful apprentice ought during her term aforesaid. And the said David Pitman on his part hereby covenants, promises and agrees to send said Sarah Catherine to school and cause her to be taught to read and write and the rules of Arithmetic to the double rule of 3, inclusive, if practicable and said David Pitman also binds himself to teach and instruct said Sarah Catherine in the art and trade of a house wife in the best manner he can and to provide for said Sarah Catherine good and sufficient meat, drink, clothing and other necessaries for and convenient for such an apprentice during the term aforesaid and at the expiration thereof he shall give to said Sarah Catherine, 1 good milk cow, a good bed and bedding & bedstead, clothing suitable to her age and condition.

This indenture of apprenticeship between Solomon Harbaugh and Joseph Charley, and John William Harbaugh, witnessed that the said Solomon Harbaugh who is the father of said John William Harbaugh  who will be 4 yrs old on the 6th of Jan. next. Hath and doth hereby bind unto the said Joseph Charley, the said John William as an apprentice until the 6th of Jan. 1874 from the date hereof  to learn the trade and occupation of farming and the said Solomon Harbaugh covenants that the said John William shall faithfully serve the said Joseph Charley as such apprentice during said term and the said Joseph Charley covenants with said Solomon Harbaugh to teach him the said John William the said trade and occupation and to provide him during said apprenticeship with all necessaries proper to his age and condition, and to cause him to be taught to read and write and the rules of Arithmetic to the double rule of 3, inclusive, if practicable, and at the expiration of said term to furnish to him the said John William Harbaugh the following clothing & property, to wit: a good suit of cloth clothing and a good horse, saddle and bridle.

Know all men by these present that I, J.W. Welker of the Harrison Co. IN. and held and ___ bound to pay to Colmore L. Marshall the sum of $1900.00 for the payment of which I bind myself, my heirs & Administrators forever the conditions of this bond is such that I have this day bargained and sold unto the said Colmore L. Marshall  a certain trust or parcel of land lying and being in Harrison Co. IN. known and designated as the East half and the South west quarter of the North west quarter section 2 in Township 3, South of range 3 East on the district of land subject to sale at Jeffersonville Meridan containing 98 acres and 55 hundreths of an acre for and in consideration of which the said Colomore L. Marshall has this day executed his notes payable as follows: one note for $75 payable on the 16th of Dec.1857, one for $200 payable Dec. 25th, 1858,one for $200 payable Dec.25th 1859, one for $185 payable Dec. 23rd 1860, on the payment of the aforesaid notes I am held and firmly bound in personal sum of $1900.00 to make the said Colmore L. Marshall a good and lawful deed for the above tract or parcel of land.
Now if the deed shall be made or payment of said notes according to witness,
this bond shall be null and void otherwise to ___ in full force in law.

Overseers of the Poor to Joseph Deweese

This indenture witnessed that James Crayden and Jonathan Jenkins Overseers of the Poor for Jackson Township, Harrison  Co. IN do hereby put, place and bind out Lydia Routh, a poor child of said Township, who has not mother living, and no father in the state of IN. and no sufficient means of support or education, as an apprentice to Joseph Deweese Jr., to learn the art and mystery of housewifery. The said Lydia Routh to dwell with and serve said Joseph Deweese Jr., after the manner of an apprentice from this date until the 1st of Nov. 1866, at which time if living said apprentice will be 18 yrs of age, during all which time shall well and faithfully serve her master readily obey his lawful commands, keep his secrets, & do him no willful damage and carry and behave herself  as a good and faithful apprentice during the whole time aforesaid. And the said Joseph Deweese Jr.  on his part covenants and agrees to teach and instruct said apprentice or cause her  to be taught, and instructed to read, write and cipher to the double rule of 3, inclusive, if she be capable to learn. And also to teach and instruct said apprentice or cause to be taught and instructed the art and mystery of housewifery, in the best way and manner he can, & lodging, and other necessaries fit and convenient for said apprentice during the time aforesaid and at the expiration thereof shall give unto the said apprentice 1 ordinary bed and bedding.

Joseph Charley to Julius C. and David H. Swan.

Know all men by these presents that I, Joseph Charley am held and firmly bound unto Julius C. & David Swan in the final sum of $6000.00 and well and truly to be made and done, I bind myself , my heirs and Administrators or Assigns, sealed with my Seal and dated this 25th of Aug. 1856. The conditions of the above obligation is that, the above bound Joseph Charley has this day sold to the said Julius C. & David H. Swan for the sum of $3000.00 the following described lands in Harrison Co. IN. and on the terms following, to wit: $500.00 on or before the 1st of January 1857, and $500.00 on or before the 1st of March 1858, $500.00 on or before the 1st of March 1861 & $500.00 on or before the 1st of March 1862. Lands To Wit: All that part of the Northeast  and South East quarter  of section 35 in Township 3 South of Range 3 East that lies on the South and West side of the Big Indian Creek, the top of the 1st bluff bank of the South and West banks of said Creek to the line containing 70 acres more or less. Also the East half of the South West Quarter of section #35 in Township 3 Range 3 East, containing 8 acres, more or less.. And also the following described land beginning at the North West corner of the West half of the North East quarter of section 2 in Township 4, South of the base line in Range 3 East, of the second principal meridian, running South 61 degrees East. 13 poles  & 13 links to a birch tree thence South 49 degrees East 62 poles to a stone planted in the ground thence north 41 degrees East 18 poles to the center of Big Indian Creek, thence following the center of the Creek to the base line, cropping the same thence to the place of beginning, containing 6 and ¾ acres be the same more or less.

And also the following lands beginning at the North West corner of the North East quarter of section #2 Township 4, South of Range 3 East, of the second meridian running thence in an East, South Eastern direction 205 feet, to a birch tree, thence running North east, to the line dividing said section 2, in Township 4 and section 35, in Township 3, thence West along said line to the place of beginning, containing 1 acre more or less. Also all that part of the North west quarter of section 35, in Township 3, South of range 3 East, that lies in the South east corner of said quarter on the South and East sides of the Big Indian Creek, the middle of said Creek being the line containing 1 acre more or less. And also the following land, To wit: Beginning at the center of Big Indian Creek where the base line crosses said creek, said baseline being the East and West line of the West half of the Northeast quarter of section 2 in Township 4,South of the base line in range 3 East of the second meridian running East, 70 poles thence South 16 degrees West, 30 poles, thence West 18 poles to the center of the said big Indian Creek thence following the center of the Creek to the place of beginning, containing 7 acres.

Now if the said Swans shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid to the said Charley, the above named sum of $3000.00 in sums above specified without any delay, then the above bound Joseph Charley shall in the final sum above mentioned execute the said Julius C. Swan & David H. Swan a good and sufficient warranty, conveyance by deed in and to all the lands above described. But in the case of failure on the part of the said Julius C. Swan & David H. Swan to make payments as aforesaid then this Indenture and all the estate hereby created shall be absolutely null and void and anything herein before contained to the contrary not withstanding.

John & Sarah A. Cunningham to Thomas Windle


This indenture made this 21st of  Aug.1857 by 7 between John & Sarah A. Cunningham, her husband of the 1st part, & Thomas Windle of the 2nd part. Witnessed that that said Sarah Cunningham by and with the consent of her husband, the said John Cunningham has this day put, bound and apprenticed her child age 11 yrs on the 13th of May 1857and named Thomas Windle, unto the said Thomas Windle of the 2nd part, to be taught in the trade & science of farming, which the said Thomas now uses & to live with & serve him as an apprentice from the date hereof until the 13th of  May 1867, at which time her said child will be 21 yrs of age, during the term of said service, the 1st part, covenant with the 2nd part, that the said Thomas Windle shall faithfully serve for the time aforesaid his said master, Thomas Windle, that he will in all things be a good and faithful apprentice and behave himself to his said master & all his during his said term of service, the said Thomas Windle on his part doth covenant and agree with the 2nd part, said Covenant being for the use and benefit of said apprentice, that he will during the time of the service of said Thomas furnish him with a good comfortable clothing and food that he will cause him said apprentice  to be taught the ordinary carpenter trade & the art of farming, that he will cause him to be taught reading, writing & Arithmetic , Geography, & English grammar, that he will within 5 yrs from this date purchase & cause to be decided or patented to his apprentice Thomas Windle 80 acres of land to be selected with a view to the future enhanced value in one of the Western States. All of which agreement the said Thomas Windle of the 2nd part covenants faithfully to perform.

Elizabeth Sims to George L. Trannum


Know all men that Elizabeth Sims is held and firmly bound unto George L. Trannum, his heirs and assigns in the final sum of $400.00 for the payment of which said Elizabeth Sims binds herself, her heirs and executors and administrators. Whereas the said Elizabeth Sims has this day bargained and sold unto the said George l. Trannum, the North end of the East half of the Northwest quarter of section 5, in Township 5 South, Range 4 East, all that said half quarter above described that lies on the North side of Beech Creek, supposed to contain 30 acres, more or less, in Harrison Co. IN. for the sum of $175. Seventy-five dollars which is now paid in hand and the promissory note of the said Trannum this day Executed  for the remainder, $100.00, drawing 6 per cent interest from date and payable on or before the 1st of March 1859. Now, should the said Elizabeth Sims or her heirs make restitute and deliver to the said George L. Trannum, his heirs or assigns a good and sufficient General Warranty deed for the above land upon the payment of the said promissory note for $100.00 and the interest thereon then this obligation shall be void else remain in full foresaid virtue of the law.

George O’Conner to Jesse Holliday, Agreement.

Article of Agreement, made & entered this 1st of Jan. 1857, between George O’Conner of the one part & Jesse Holliday of the other part, both parties of Harrison Co. IN. Witnessed that the said Geo. O’Conner has this day sold unto the said J. Holliday a certain tract or parcel of land in aforesaid county & state described & bounded as follows: viz. a part of the East half of the South east quarter of  section 31 in T. 5 south of range 4 East, in the district of lands subject to sale at, Jeffersonville, IN. beginning at the south east corner of said quarter & running West, 80 rods to a stake or stone thence North 160 rods to a stake or stone, thence, East to a stake between said lands & Laconia,  Town lots, thence South to the corner of Joseph Anderson lands on same quarter, thence East to the dividing section 311 & 32, thence South to the place of beginning to contain 64 acres, more or less, it being the same farm on which the said  Holliday now lives. The conditions of the above article is such that if the said O’Conner, shall make or cause to be made to the said Holliday a good and sufficient deed to said land and pay him the sum of $200, good and lawful money, if the said Holliday will convey by deed to the said O’Conner a certain brick house and lot, owned by said Holliday in the town of Brandenburg, KY. Together with all rents & profits, that may come into his the said Holliday’s hands by said premises from the 1st of Jan. 1857, until said deed is made by said O’Conner, to him the said Holliday.  And further the said O’Conner binds himself in the final sum of $1000.00 to use due diligence to procure a deed for said premises & convey the same to said Holliday at his said O’Conner’s own proper cost, as soon as the circumstances will admit.

Witness heretofore, to wit:  on the 12th of Oct. 1857, by judgement and consideration of the Harrison Co.  Circuit Court, Amelia Young, widow of St.Clair Young, William S. Young, Stanley Young, Robert A. Young, James M. Young, Ameilia H. Young, Matilda C. Young, Amelia Timberlake, Elizabeth Timberlake, and John Timberlake, heirs at law, of St. Clair Young, deceased, recovered against Caroline Johnson and Charles Johnson her husband. Alvardo P. Steele, and his wife, James R. Shean and his wife, and James L. Carrico, the sum of $30.50, the cost of suit which judgement is against, the plaintiffs first above named for the benefit of the Clerk and other offices of said Court, and witness in said cause , and whereas afterwards, to wit: on the 21st of May 1858, and execution was duly issued under the hand of the Clerk and the seal of said directed to and placed in the hands of the undersigned Sheriff of Harrison Co. IN. commanding him of the property of said plaintiffs, Johnson, Steel, Shean, and others above named to make said costs and accruing costs and return said  wit. ___ And afterwards to wit, on the 22nd of 1858, there being mp personal property in my bailiwick that I could find, I levied said wit, on the following described lands lying in Harrison Co. In. to wit: The South end of the South east half quarter of section 34 in Township 5, south of range 5 East, containing 40 acres, also another tract of 589 acres, it being the residue of the ___ section #3 in Township 6, south of range 5 East, Also another tract being the South west half of factional section 35 in Township 5 South, and in range 5 East and after having the same with the rents and profits aforesaid and advertised according  to law. I did on the 24th of July, 1858 offer the same for sale at public auction, as the law directs, and the same were not sold for want of bidders, and afterwards to wit; on 21st of Aug. 1858, being so directed after readvertising the same land for sale according to, I again offered the same for sale according to law before the Courthouse door in the town of Corydon, between the hours prescribed by law, that is to say, I offered for sale at public auction the rents and profits of said land to wit: 1o acres being a part of fractional section 5 in township 6, range 5 in Harrison Co. IN. bounded as follows, commencing at the wagon road, on the West side of a little creek, on the main bank of the Ohio River, in the South East corner of said fractional section 3, thence down the Ohio River main bank, 40 rods, thence North far enough so that at a line at right angle with said road, to the place of beginning shall include said amount of 10 acres, said lot fronting on the Ohio River 40 rods and running back, and on the west side of the creek & road, for quantity and George W. Denbo, bid therefore the sum $100.33 and 1/3rd cents per acre per annum and that being a sum not less than 2/3rd  of the appraised value and the highest and bed offer I could get for the same. I then and there openly struck off and sold said rents and profits of said 10 acres for said terms of 5 yrs to said Geo. W. Denbo for said sum of $100.33 & 1/3rd  cents per acre per annum making for said term the sum $100.33 &1/3rd cents  and the said Denbo having receipted said with for his part and paid in the residue of this said bid, therefore this , Indenture witnessed that I, Jacob Stockslager as Sheriff by virtue of the aforesaid proceedings, which will with more full and at large appear by the records of said Court hereby lease and transfer to the said Geo. W. Denbo, the aforesaid 10 acres so sold to him as aforesaid and all rents and profits therefore for the term of 5 yrs from the date of said sale.

Delila Heshman to Hugh Dyer

Delila Heshman by this indenture hereby binds her son John T. Heshman until he is 18 yrs of age, which will be on the 28th of  August 1867 to Hugh Dyer to learn the trade of farming and covenants that he shall remain with the said Dyer until the time aforesaid , and faithfully serve him. The said Dyer agrees with the said Delila for the benefit of the said John, that he will teach said John the art of farming and cause him to read , write and the rules of Arithmetic to the double rule of 3, inclusive, board and clothe said John& at the expiration of said service give him 1 suit of dress clothes, 1 horse, saddle and bridle worth $100, or $100 in cash in lieu of horse, saddle and bridle.

Andrew Woolburt to Andrew States

This indenture witnessed that Andrew Woolburt of Harrison Co. In. has put, placed and by these presence doth put, and bind his son Andrew Woolburt, as an apprentice to Andrew States to learn the art, trade and mystery of farming, which the said Andrew States now uses, the said Andrew Wooburt to dwell with and serve the said Andrew States after the manner of an apprentice from the day of the date hereof until the 1st of Oct. 1876, at which time the said apprentice if he shall still live will be 21 yrs old, during which time the said apprentice shall well and faithfully serve his said master , keep his secrets, and every where at all times readily obey his lawful commands. He shall do no damage to his said master, nor willfully suffer any to be done by others, and if any, to his knowledge he intended he shall give his said master reasonable notice thereof. He shall not waste the goods of his said master nor lend them unlawfully to any, he shall not play at cards, dice or any other unlawful game, he shall not contract matrimony during the said term, he shall not haunt or frequent  taverns, tippling houses or place of gaming, he shall not absent himself from the service of his said master, but shall in all things and at all times carry and behave himself as a good and faithful apprentice might during the whole of his term aforesaid. And the said Andrew States on his part doth hereby covenant, promise and agree to teach and instruct  the said apprentice or cause him to be taught, and instructed to read, write and cipher to the double rule of 3, inclusive, if the said apprentice be capable to learn, and also to teach and instruct the said apprentice in the art, trade and mystery of farming, in the best manner he can, and will and faithfully to find and provide for the said apprentice good and sufficient meat, drink, clothing, and lodging, together with all proper medical aid in case of sickness and all other necessaries fir and convenient for such an apprentice, during the term aforesaid. And at the time of expiration thereof, shall pay unto the said apprentice, the full and just, sum of $50 to be collected, waiving, all benefit of the appraisment, valuation laws of the State of IN.

Before me Richard Jameson, a justice of the peace within and for said county this 16th of Feb. 1859, personally appeared Andrew Woolburt & Andrew States  and acknowledged the signing, sealing and delivery of the foregoing Indenture to be their voluntary acts and deeds and done for the purposes herein expressed.
