Indenture 27.
Thompson Tindell
to Nicholas B. Tindell
Know all men, by these present, that
I Thompson Tindell am held and firmly bound unto Nicholas B. Tindell in
the General sum of $1375.00 to the which payment to be fully made and
done . I bind myself, my heirs and administrators firmly by these
presents, sealed with my seal, this 5th of March 1859. The
condition of the above is such that, he the said Thompson T. Tindell
hath this day sold to the said Nicholas B. Tindall, a certain tract or
parcel of land lying and being in Harrison Co. IN. , described and
bounded as follows, to wit: It being a part of the Southwest quarter of
section 31 in Township 4, south of range 4 East, bounded as
follows, to wit: Beginning at the North west corner of A.H.
Crisps tract of land and running with William W. Dooley’s line West, to
said Dooley’s South corner. Thence West, with William Blines line to
said Blines , south west corner to section 31 on the range line and
thence South with the said range line 48 poles to a stake and thence
East 150 poles to a stake on the said A.H. Crisp’s line, and thence
North with said line 58 poles, to the place of beginning, containing 45
acres, more or less, for the sum of $685.00 to be paid as follows
, to wit: $300, cash in hand, the receipt whereof is hereby
acknowledged , also 3 promissory notes as follows, to wit: 1 note for
$175. due and payable the 1st of March 1860, also 1 note for $100 due
and payable the 1st of March 1861, also 1 note due and payable the 1st
of March 1862. It is to be fairly understood, that when he the said
Nicholas B. Tindell shall well and truly pay to the said Thompson
Tindell the aforesaid notes, he the said Thompson T. Tindell, binds
himself, his heirs and administrators to convey the aforesaid tract or
parcel of land to the said Nicholas B. Tindell by a good and sufficient
Warranty deed, then the above obligation to be void, else to remain in
full force in law.

Corydon, IN, Feb. 3,1860
Notice is hereby given to William
Howard and all others whom it may concern that the undersigned holds a
lien which he intends to enforce for balance due him work & labor
in the construction on erection of a 1 story house 32 long by 16 feet
wide. Said house being situate on a part of the Northwest quarter of
the section 31 in Town 3, south of range 4 East lying in Harrison
county and bounded as follows, to wit: Commencing at a point in the
main Channel of Little Indian Creek where the lands of Carter Likens
and the land formerly owned by Samuel Sherman corner, running thence
north with the line dividing the lands of said Likens & Sherman to
the North side of the New Albany, Lanesville & Corydon Clamp road,
thence West with said road 160 feet, thence South to an Elm Stump,
thence South to a point in the main Channel of said Creek. thence with
the meander of said creek to the place of beginning. The undersigned
claims lien, which he intends to hold on said house framed, is
for erection of building said house, said Howard having furnished
materials, said work has been completed within 60 days last part ___,
on the 10th of Dec. 1860, the undersigned further states that on the
1st of Dec. 1859, he settled with said Howard for work then done &
to be done by him in building said house, and there was a balance found
due the undersigned of $11.11. of which said Howard gave his
eight promissory notes all bearing date Dec. 1st, 1859. the second ,
first being for $10 each, the first being due and payable 1 day after
date & the third part due in one, two, three four & six
months after date, The last note $1.00 (?) being due 8 months after
date. That on the 6th of July 1860, said Howard paid $4. on the first
note. That said Howard owes the undersigned the amount of said notes
less the $5, herein mentioned.

I hereby notify you that I intend to
hold and do hereby hold a lien on your new frame dwelling house,
standing in lot number 127 in the town of Corydon for carpenter and
joiner work done by me on said house in its erection and completion to
the amount of $145.60, for which you have give me your promissory note
bearing date with this notice, payable 12 months after date with
interest from date & waiving valuation & appraisement laws of
IN., Feb. 1,1860.

Matthew Keller to Frederick Mosler
This indenture made this 11th of Feb.
1860 by and between Matthew Keller, the father of Andrew Keller, and
the said Andrew Keller who was 16 yrs of age on the 7th of Oct. last
past and Frederick Mosler, witnessed that the said son Matthew
Keller with the consent of his said son Andrew Keller, which is hereby
given, binds his said son Andrew as an apprentice for the term of 5 yrs
from this date, to said Frederick Mosler to learn the art and mystery
of farming, and that said Frederick Mosler agrees to take said Andrew
Keller as such apprentice for the said term and to teach him or cause
said apprentice to be taught to read, write and the rules of Arithmetic
to the double rule of 3, inclusive of the same by practicable, and if
the said apprentice shall stay his full term to wit: The said Mosler
agrees to give him at the expiration of said term a horse, saddle and
bridle, such as would now be worth $130, also a suit of clothes, such
as are now worth $15.
And during such apprenticeship, said
Mosler also agrees to provide said apprentice with clothing, boarding
and proper manner care for him in sickness and health and raise him to
habits of morality & industry if the same be practicable.

John Goldsmith to Joseph Symcox.
This indenture witnessed that John
Goldsmith hath this day bound himself to Joseph Symcox , to learn
the art of farming, and that the said John Goldsmith binds himself to
work with the Symcox, until he is 21 yrs of age, he now being 15 yrs
old, or was 14 yrs old on the day May 1859. The said Joseph
Symcox binds himself to have said apprentice taught to read, write and
taught the rules of arithmetic to the double rule of 3,if practicable,
and to give to the said John Goldsmith a new suit of clothes and a
horse, saddle and bridle, at the time he arrives at the age of 21 yrs,
provided he stays with the said Joseph Symcox until his apprenticeship
shall expire.
In witness whereof thereof the
parties have hereunto set their hands and seals this 6th of Feb.

Standt claims a lien on said property for the value of lumber
furnished as aforesaid to the amount of $20.15

Ellet,
This indenture entered into this 9th
of Oct, 1860 between George Ellet of the one part and John Longer of
the other part, both of Harrison Co. IN. Witnessed that I, Geo.
Ellet have this day bound & apprenticed to the said John Longer, my
daughter, Sarah Ellet, who is 7 yrs of age on the 15th of Dec.
1860 to learn the art of housekeeping, the said Longer is to board,
cloth and educate said Sarah & keep her so apprenticed until she
arrives at the age 18 yrs. & I give the said Longer full control
over my said daughter Sarah Ellet.

This indenture entered into on this
28th of Aug. 1861, between Lemuel B. Cooper, Trustee of Taylor
Township, Harrison Co. IN. of the first part & Jacob Kessinger of
Harrison Co. of the other part.
Witnessed that the said Lemuel B.
Cooper, Trustee aforesaid has this day bound and apprenticed to the
said Jacob Kessinger, Martha F. Brashier, a poor child abt. 2 yrs
old to learn the art of housekeeping. The said Jacob Kessinger is to
board and cloth the said child and provide medical aid in sickness and
to give her a common school education, to read, write and to understand
Arithmetic to the rule of 3 inclusive, and good moral instruction and
cause her to be instructed in the various acts of housekeeping and keep
her so apprenticed until the said Martha F. Brashier arrives at the age
of 18, extra, and a good suit of clothes for Sunday and a bed.

Indenture of apprenticeship made and
entered into on the 9th of Jan. 1862, between B.S. Thornesburg ,
Trustee Heth township, Harrison co. IN. of the first part & John
Timberlake, of the same place, Witnessed that the said B.S.
Thornesburg, aforesaid has this day bound unto the said John
Timberlake, a white small boy by the name of John W. McGall of the age
of 13 yrs, old in Aug. 1861, until he the said John W. McGall shall
arrive at the age of 21 yrs. to serve said Timberlake as an apprentice
in the art and mystery of farming, and any other lawful business of
said Timberlake. For and in consideration of which service the said
John Timberlake agrees on his part with the education he has already
given John W. McGall to educate said boy to the double rule of 3,
also to furnish said boy with the necessary clothing to keep him
comfortable and decent at all times during his apprenticeship, also to
furnish said boy with all medical aid necessary and to treat him at all
times as a prudent father would his own son, & instruct him in
morality and work said boy according to the statute in such case made
and provided, & at the expiration of such apprenticeship, to
furnish said John W. McGall the sum of $50 in money and as much more in
the liberality of said Timberlake he may be willing to bestow on said
boy.

and work on the farm of Anthony Faessel during the natural life of both
his parents , he is to have 2/3rds, of what he can raise on the farm,
he pays 1/3rd for rent, if any time he should leave them without their
consent. I forfeit the third of my property to them, what I possess and
I bind myself to take no property away, but it there and then shall
become forfeited to them.

This indenture witnessed that we
Amanda Knapp, mother of William Franklin Mode (whose father is dead) of
the first part, and Jonathan Kintner of the second part, have this day
entered into the following agreement.
The part of the first part hereby
bind as an apprentice the said Wm. Franklin Mode to the said party of
the 2nd part until the said Wm. Franklin shall arrive to the age of 21
yrs. which will be on the 22nd of Oct.1868. And the said party of the
second part agrees to take the said apprentice for that time &
diligently teach him the art of husbandry, to raise him in a moral and
honest manner, to cause said apprentice to be taught to read and write
and the rule of Arithmetic to the double rule of 3,inclusive, if
practicable, provided that the time of sending said apprentice to
school shall not be less than 7 months exclusive of 3 months which he
has already sent him to school, and at the expiration of said time, the
said party of the 2nd part agrees to give said apprentice 1 good common
horse, saddle and bridle, of medium value, also 2 good suits of
clothes, a Sunday & an everyday suit, and during the whole of said
time to provide him suitable maintenance in health and sickness,
including everything that is necessary for his health and bodily
comfort.

$300 in county orders (?) and $275 in cash, and immediately release
said Franklin Mode from this Indenture. All of which is the wish and

This indenture, witnessed that
Elvina Kleven of the city of Louisville, Jefferson Co. Ky. hath put,
placed and by these presents doth put, place and bind out her son Oscar
Kleven, as an apprentice to Frederick Massler, of Harrison Co. IN. to
learn the art, trade and mystery of farming. The said Oscar
Kleven , after the manner of an apprentice to dwell with and serve said
Frederick Massler from the day of the date hereof , until the 24th of
Jan. 1871, at which time the said apprentice will be 18 yrs of age. The
said Elvina Kleven being dully authorized to bind her son, his father
being dead. And during the term of said apprenticeship the
said Oscar Kleven shall faithfully serve his said master, keep his
secrets, and everywhere, at all times readily obey his lawful
commands, he shall do no damage to his said master, nor suffer any to
be done.
He shall not waste the goods of his
master, nor conduct himself in an intemperate or licentious manner, he
shall not contract matrimony during said time, but in all things, and
at all times he shall carry and behave himself as a good and faithful
apprentice ought to during the whole time or term aforesaid.
And the said Frederick Massler on his
part doth hereby covenant, promise and agree to teach and instruct the
said apprentice or cause him to be taught and instructed to read, write
and cipher as far as the double rule of 3, if the said apprentice be
capable to learn, and shall well and faithfully find and provide for
the said apprentice good& sufficient meat, drink, clothing, lodging
and other necessaries fit and convenient for such apprentice during the
term aforesaid, and at the expiration thereof shall give unto the said
apprentice 2 suits of clothing, 1 suitable for Sunday, the other for
working days, and $60.00 in cash.

This indenture made and
entered into this 3rd of Dec. 1863 between Catharine A. Krauskill of
Harrison Co. IN. of the first part and John F. Greiner the said county
& state of the second part, witnessed that, said Catharine a.
Krauskill doth hereby put, place and bind out to said John F. Greiner,
her daughter Mary Adeline Krauskill as an apprentice to said John F.
Greiner to learn the art and mystery of housewifery. The said Mary
Adleine Krauskill to dwell with and serve said John F. Greiner after
the manner of an apprentice from this date until the 6th of Nov.
1877 at which said apprentice (if living) will be 18 yrs of age,
and during all of which time said apprentice shall well and faithfully
serve her said master, readily obey his lawful commands, keep his
secrets, do him no willful damage, and carry and behave herself as a
good and faithful apprentice during the whole time aforesaid.
The said John F. Greiner, on his part
covenants and agrees to send said apprentice to school, not less than 3
months in each year, from the time she is 6 yrs old till she is 14 ,
and also to teach and instruct said apprentice or cause her to be
taught and instructed in the art and mystery of housewifery in
the best way, & manner he can & well and faithfully to provide
for said apprentice good and sufficient meat, drink, clothing &
lodging and other necessaries fir and convenient for said
apprentice during the time aforesaid, and at the expiration thereof
shall give said apprentice 1 good bedstead & bedding & 1 cow
and if said apprentice conducts herself well he agrees to give her as
many other articles as he shall see fit, and the said Catherine
Krauskill on her part agrees to furnish her said daughter with good
summer clothing from this date until she arrives at age 10 years.

heir of Peter Dick, deceased of Harrison Co. IN. , hath put, placed
& by these presents doth put, place and bind out his said Ward as
an apprentice to John Louis, of Harrison Co. IN. to learn the art,
trade and mystery of farming. The said Peter Dick, after the manner of
apprentice to dwell with and serve the said John Louis from the day of
the date hereof until the 17th of Jan. 1872, at which time said
apprentice will be 18 yrs of age. The said Peter Dick during the term
of apprenticeship shall faithfully serve his said master, keep his
secrets, and everywhere at all times readily obey his lawful commands,
he shall do no damage to his said master, nor suffer any to be done, he
shall not waste the goods of his master, nor conduct
himself in an intemperate or licentious manner, he shall not

This indenture witnessed, that Jesse Dick of Harrison Co. IN. hath by
the consent of his Guardian Samuel J., Wright, put, place and by these
presents, doth put, place and as an apprentice to Henry Dick of
Harrison Co. IN. to learn the art, trade & mystery of farming, the
said Jesse Dick after the manner of an apprentice to dwell with and
serve the said Henry Dick from the date hereof until the 26th of Oct.
1867, at which time the said Jesse Dick, the apprentice aforesaid, will
be 18 yrs of age. The said Jesse Dick during the term of his
apprenticeship shall faithfully serve his said master, keep his
secrets, and everywhere at all time readily obey his lawful commands,
he shall do no damage to his said master nor suffer any to be done, he
shall not waste the goods of his master, nor conduct himself in an
intemperate or licentious manner, he shall not contract matrimony
during said term, but in al things and at all times he shall carry and
behave himself as a good and faithful apprentice ought during the whole
time or term aforesaid.
The said Henry Dick on his part doth hereby covenant, agree and promise
to teach and instruct the said apprentice or cause him to be instructed
to read, write and cipher as far as the double rule of 3, inclusive, if
the said apprentice be capable to learn, and shall faithfully find and
provide, sufficient meat, drink, clothing and lodging and other
necessaries fit and convenient for such an apprentice during his
term aforesaid, and at the expiration thereof shall furnish good and
sufficient every day clothing for working days if said apprentice shall
not have been previously furnished a sufficient amount thereof.
Also a suitable new suit of clothing for Sundays.

Harrison Co. IN. hath put, placed and by these presents, doth put,
place and bind our his said Ward, Elijah Dick to an apprentice to
Jacob Deutsch, of Harrison Co. IN. to learn the art, trade and mystery
of farming. The said Elijah Dick, after the manner of an Apprentice is
to dwell with and serve the said Jacob Deutsch, from the
day of the date hereof until the 8th of Jan. 1870, at which time said
apprentice will be 18yrs of age. The said Elijah during the time of
said apprenticeship shall faithfully serve his said master,
keep his secrets, and everywhere and at all times readily obey his

Amanda Knapp, mother of John Edward Mode aged 13 yrs on Feb. 25,
1864, of the first part and David A. Mauck of the 2nd part,
witnessed, that the said Amanda Knapp who is the mother of John Edward
Mode, binds the said John E. Mode to the said David A. Mauck for and
during the minority of said John E. Mode and until the minor becomes of
the age of 21 yrs. The said David A. Mauck for and in consideration of
the service of said minor binds himself to teach said minor the farming
business, and to keep said John E. Mode in sickness and health, and
furnish said minor with comfortable clothing, and lodging, and also
binds himself to send said minor to school during his minority for 9
months, and also when the said term of service expires, he further

and by these presents, doth put and bind out his said Ward as an
Apprentice to George Dick of Harrison Co., to learn the art and trade
and mystery of farming.
The said Peter Dick after the manner of an apprentice to dwell with and
serve the said George Dick from the day of the date hereof, until the
17th of Jan. 1872, at time the said apprentice will be 18 yrs of age.
The said Peter Dick during the term of said apprenticeship shall
faithfully serve his master, keep his secrets, and everywhere at all

This indenture made this 25th of Jan, 1865, between Adam C. Highfill of
one part and Franklin McRae , Trustee of Webster Township,. of the
other part, each of Harrison Co. IN. witnessed; that Franklin
McRae as overseer of the poor in said Township do bind and by
these presents do bind and place William Quick, the said William Quick
having been bound by the original overseers of the poor on the 26th of
June 1855 to one George Trannum, being the same, Wm. Quick that is
hereby placed to A.C. Highfill, the said Wm. Quick being 12 yrs. &
7 months and 4 days old,is to live with and serve the said A.C.
Highfill as an apprentice in the farming business for the term of 8
yrs. 5 months and 26 days, that is until he is 21 yrs of age, and if
the said A.C. Highfill shall live and that I, Franklin McRae as
overseer do by these presents give and authorize the said A.C. Highfill
to assume all the right power an authority over the said Wm. Quick in
his service during the said term which by the laws of the aforesaid
state, regulating master and apprentices, set forth, and that the said
A.C. Highfill in consideration thereof doth on his part promise and
agree and with the overseer and his successors in office and Wm. Quick
that he will teach and instruct the said Wm. Quick in the art of
farming or cause it to be done and also to teach or cause to be done to
the end of Rays Arithmetic , third part, also a fair knowledge of the
English grammer & Geography, to train him to industry and morality
during the term of service, to provide and allow him sufficient
subsistence, lodging, and clothing, and all things necessary for his
comfort during said term of service. The said A.C. Highfill covenants
and further agrees to “give” said Wm. Quick at term of service 2
suits of clothing for every day “use” and 1 suit of respectful clothes
in addition, also 1 horse, saddle and bridle worth $75 in cash, or that
amount in cash.

The said David W. Gresham covenants with the said Rebecca b. Hook
to teach her son the said George W. Hook said occupation and to provide
him during said apprenticeship with all necessaries proper to his age
and condition and to cause him to receive a good common school
education and at the expiration of said term to furnish to him the said
George W. Hook a full suit of dress clothing, such as is generally and
