THE
OLD CONRAD CEMETERY

Harrison Township, Harrison County, Indiana

Submitted by Kevin Conrad

The Old Conrad Cemetery is situated east from the town of Corydon, in the Northeast ¼ of Section 32 of Harrison Township, Township 3 South, Range 4 East, of Harrison County, Indiana. Today, this burial ground can be found off State Road 62 (turning off onto Willow Creek Drive), in the Willow Creek Subdivision, behind Lots 11 & 12 (behind the home at 435 Dillman Spring Way).

In 1807, Jacob Conrad Jr., a native of Washington County, Pennsylvania, built a hotel in this area, not far from the cemetery. This graveyard is among the oldest in Harrison County. Exactly when the this site received it’s first burial is not known, but the earliest known burial occurred on July 18, 1815, upon the death of Peter, infant son of John and Elizabeth Server. Since several graves are marked by fieldstones and some of the inscriptions on headstones have weathered away, there is no way of telling if burials occurred prior to 1815.

The original and proper name for this burial ground is the Old Conrad Cemetery. For reasons unknown, this cemetery is also incorrectly referred to as the Conrad-Shuck Cemetery and Shuck Cemetery.

As the years passed, time and the environment has taken its toll on this cemetery. As time marched forward, eventually the hill top was developed with a subdivision. This burial ground has been neglected for years and is dire need of restoration. On August 4, 2002, my wife and I visited this cemetery for the purpose of recording the names and photographing the headstones of the interred. We drove up and down the quite street searching for the cemetery and finally located it sitting behind one of the homes. We pulled into the driveway of 435 Dillman Spring Way, and asked the homeowners if we could spend time in the cemetery, which one can easily considered part of their backyard. The homeowners agreed and very polite considering our intrusion on this hot Sunday afternoon. The homeowners explained since their purchase of the home, they have slowly been chopping out the overgrown vegetation and saplings that had consumed the cemetery; noting that many of the headstones had fallen over and were broken.

An earlier survey was conducted on this cemetery by Frederick P. and Maurice Griffin. The earlier recordings from this survey is dated October 29, 1939 and is part of a large compilation of Harrison County cemeteries documented by Fred Griffin. The 2002 survey conducted by my wife and I precedes the 1939 survey of the Old Conrad Cemetery.

Researchers should consult both surveys since there are some significant differences between the two records. The primary difference is more headstones existed in the 1939 than in 2002 (Note: Those headstones which were not found during the 2002 survey, but are listed in the 1939 survey are identified in bold). Exactly what happened to these now missing headstones is anyone’s guess. Also, there are few instances were conflicts occur between the two surveys regarding a particular date, age or letter of initial. I would recommended consulting the 2002 survey first, since this information has been double checked and also compared against the photos taken during the 2002 survey. Where information is missing or in question (identified by ? ), the survey of 1939 should be consulted.
