OLD MT. ZION UNITED BRETHERN CEMETERY

(a.k.a. Crossroads Cemetery)
Heth Township, Harrison County, Indiana
"Rev 2"
Submitted by Kevin Conrad

The old Mt. Zion cemetery is located on Hillcrest Road, which is north from the town of Mauckport and 1 block west from State Road 135, in Heth Township of Harrison County, Indiana.

This graveyard is situated in the Southwest ¼ of the Northwest ¼ of Section 27, Township 5 South, Range 3 East. The coordinates for this location is located on the USGS Mauckport Quad, UTM 16 571355E 4211728N (WGS84/NAD83); otherwise known as: Latitude 38° 03' 02"N and Longitude 86° 11' 12"W.

The old Mt. Zion cemetery is commonly and incorrectly referred to by some as the Crossroads cemetery, although early settlers referred to this area as “the crossroads.”

This burial ground ranks among some of the oldest in Harrison County and many early settlers are buried at this location. This cemetery is reported in early records as being full; with three hundred and twenty-five (325) marked graves inscribed with names. However, this number does not reflect the number of graves marked by fieldstones or those now unmarked. Conservatively speaking, the estimated total number of graves at this cemetery, if full as stated in early writings, would be somewhere between six and eight hundred (600-800) graves.

Time and neglect has placed this cemetery in a poor state of condition. Although the grass is regularly moved, no work has been accomplished to maintain the cemetery’s grave markers until recently (2006); and then only a limited amount of work. If visiting this final resting one will find multiple broken and missing headstones and markers, not to mention the number of graves where only headstone fragments remain

The earliest known burial occurred on December 5, 1823, upon the death of John Deen, son of Jeremiah G. Deen and Catharine Lopp. Jeremiah and Catharine Deen is Kevin Conrad’s (the submitter of this writing) great-great-great-great grandparents. John’s burial was followed by that of Jacob and David Similar; two brothers who drowned in the Ohio River on August 2, 1824. The last known burial occurred on March 30, 1923 upon the death of Martha Love, the daughter of Daniel Baker Love and Julia A. Ripperdan.

There are five separate cemeteries (new Mt. Zion, Highland, Eureka, Miller-Shields and Kingsley) and two churches (the Hyland Christian Church and Mt. Zion E.U.B. Church) within close proximity to the old Mt. Zion cemetery. Note: the Highland and Eureka cemeteries are located adjacent to the Hyland Christian Church. The driveway through this cemetery separates the two; Eureka to the south and Highland to the north. The Miller-Shields cemetery is located along and borders the north-end of the old Mt. Zion cemetery.

To the south of the old Mt. Zion cemetery (towards Crossroads drive) there is a fence that separates the graveyard from private property. There is some speculation that the old Mt. Zion cemetery once extended beyond this fence-line to the south, or at least that part in the southwest portion. This speculation is supported by a number of marble grave markers found within the soil, by several individuals on different occasions. Other individuals who have visited this cemetery have also reported seeing what appeared to be cut marble gravestones, laying flat in various places beyond this same southern fence-line.

Frederick P. Griffin and Samuel P. Hays are the first known to have surveyed this cemetery. Their finding were recorded and dated November 19 & 23, 1939. A copy of this early survey is contained in Book 1, “Harrison County Indiana Cemeteries,” by Frederick Porter Griffin, maintained at the Frederick P Griffin Center of Local History and Genealogy, 117 W. Beaver St., Corydon, IN.

Kevin and Angie Conrad surveyed this cemetery over the course of five months between August 3, 2002 and January 3, 2003 (we worked on it a little at a time). There were a number of graves recorded in the 1939 survey that could not be located during the latter survey. We have discussed of a future project whereby we actually map (creating a grid-map) of this cemetery, despite the amount of time it will take to complete.

On April 22, 2006, the Harrison County Cemetery Restoration Team (HCCRT) performed some limited headstone restoration in this cemetery. This involved cleaning and repairing approximately six (6) to eight (8) headstones. The following month, the HCCRT conducted two one-day workshops in headstone restoration, which was open to the public. This event was connected with the Indiana Heritage Foundation’s participation during National Preservation Month. During this period, multiple saplings growing within the cemetery were removed and some additional restoration work was accomplished on a limited number of headstones. Despite these efforts there as a considerable amount of work still needed at old Mt. Zion.
In late 2006, the old Mt. Zion cemetery received a blow as a direct result from an adjacent construction project. For reasons unknown and beyond comprehension: the majority of the east fence was removed; all the large trees along the east side of the cemetery were cut down; and a significant area of the burial ground along the north-east half running along to the east side was bulldozed. During this activity, a number of headstones were up-rooted, knocked over, broken and some are believed to be missing altogether. The amount of loss to the graves in this impacted area will never be known. For example, when performing cemetery restoration work, one of the tasks required is probing and searching for lost grave markers that have fallen over and over time have been covered by soil and vegetation. When this area was bulldozed, this destroyed most, if not all, any remaining evidence where marked graves once existed. Why in the world anyone in the right mind would do this is beyond my comprehension. And just in case your wondering, Yes— this construction project violated Indiana State Law:

“A person with the intent to disturb the ground for the purpose of discovering or removing artifacts, burial objects, grave markers, or human remains, disturbs buried remains, or grave markers without a plan approved by DNR commits a Class-D felony.” (Indiana Code 14-21-1-28)

“A person may not disturb the ground within 100 feet of a cemetery for the purpose of erecting, altering, or repairing any structure without a development plan approved by the DHPA.” (Indiana Code 14-21-1-26.5)

Note: The term “structure” includes, but is not limited to, fence and gate posts.

 HISTORY OF Mt. ZION’s FOUNDER

Sometime between late May and mid-November 1807, John Lopp Sr., his wife Anna Catherine Hamm and six of their children, and John Lopp’s brother, Jacob Lopp, his wife Mary Margaret Boss and six of their children, migrated from the area of Abbott’s Creek in Rowan County, North Carolina and settled along the Ohio River in Harrison County, Indiana. This party was led by the family of John & Barbara Lopp Frank, and their ten known children. Also traveling in this party were the following known persons: George Snyder (a noted fiery Baptist minister), his wife Kate Byerly (sibling to John Martin Byerly and aunt of John Byerly Jr.); Mary Margaret “Catherine” [Byerly] Beanblossom (widow of Jacob Beanblossom) and their five sons; and John Byerly Jr. (son of John Martin Byerly & Anna Margaret Everhardt and the brother to Mary Margaret “Catherine” [Byerly] Beanblossom).
John Lopp Sr. and his wife Anna Catherine Hamm, is Kevin Conrad’s (the submitter) 5x great-grandparents. Both of these individuals and many of their descendants are buried in the old Mt. Zion cemetery, as well as in the new Mt. Zion, Highland and Eureka cemeteries.

In 1820, the Rev. John Lopp (Jr.), son of John Lopp Sr. and his wife Anna Catherine Hamm, organized the Zion class at this location. On November 5, 1821, William and Mary Wiseman, sold two acres to Rev. John Lopp, John Lopp Jr., and Henry Faith, Trustees of the Mt. Zion Church, also known as the “Crossroads Church,” for the purpose of a school house, meeting house and burying ground. [Source: Deed Book C, page 430]. The first church was a log house located on the south corner from the old cemetery (near the corner of Hillcrest Road and Crossroads Drive).

The Rev. John Lopp was first married to Catherine Smoots on 5 March 1822, in Harrison County, Indiana. Catherine died 11 May 1854 and is buried at this cemetery. Rev. Lopp and wife Catherine had one daughter, but she is believed to have died prior to 1850 and buried in Lopp’s row at this cemetery. Note: Records indicate there were other Lopp children buried in Lopp’s row at this cemetery. Over the years some of these graves, especially towards the northern-end have become unmarked graves. A portion of Lopp’s row (northern-end) was destroyed by the 2006 construction project.

In 1844, additional land was purchased south of the log church (opposite side of Crossroads Drive) for the purpose of establishing a new church house and cemetery. There have been two framed church houses built on this site; the second which is still standing today, no longer conducts worship services. The old Mt. Zion cemetery is full and no longer used.

On 10 May 1855, the Rev. Lopp married Lucinda Gilmore, daughter of Alexander Gilmore (a Revolutionary War soldier) and Rebecca Smith, in Harrison County, Indiana. Alexander and Rebecca Gilmore are interred at the Hottel-Gilmore family cemetery in Harrison Township.

The Rev. John Lopp died on 2 November 1866 and was interred at the old Mt. Zion cemetery. In his will, dated 2 May 1865, John left his entire estate to his wife, Lucinda, which included; a farm and over one hundred acres, and a home in Corydon where they lived. There were no children from his second marriage.

Lucinda [Gilmore] Lopp died on 22 February 1893 and is buried next to her husband Rev. John Lopp and his first wife Catherine in the old Mt. Zion cemetery.  Lucinda left her entire estate to the Trustees of the Mt. Zion Church, to be used for the up-keep of the church and the old cemetery. Their old house in Corydon (said to have been built by Henry Rice in 1812) was leased for 99 years, but in 1966, and after much controversy, it was condemned and torn down to make room for a parking lot. At that time, the Mt. Zion Church received $10,000; of which $5,000 was put into a fund for the up-keep of the seven cemeteries located at Crossroads, and $5,000 was left in the hands of the Trustees.

A number of ministers have come from this church: John Lopp Jr., Jacob Lopp, Andrew Lopp (sons of John Lopp Sr. and wife Anna Catherine Hamm), Ray B. Lopp, Ex-Bishop Daniel Shuck, David Shuck (President of Hartsville College in Bartholomew County, Indiana), John Flora, Andrew L. Best, and many others. In addition, the Zion class furnished the nucleus for the organization of the Mauckport and Otterbein U.B. churchs.  Note: David Shuck, President of Hartsville College and the  Rev. Adam Byron Condo, writer of many Harrison County U.B. Churches, are both buried at the Hartsville College cemetery in Bartholomew County, Indiana.
