THE PITMAN CEMETERY

Spencer Township, Harrison County, Indiana

The Pitman Cemetery is located in Spencer Township, off State Road 337, on Moberly Road, which is about 15 miles northwest from the town of Corydon, in Harrison County, Indiana. The cemetery is situated in a rural part of the county, with a large farm field to the east of the cemetery, which wraps around its northern and southern borders and Moberly Road to the western edge. Geographically, the cemetery is located in the Northeast ¼ of Section 18, Township-3-South, Range-3-East, or at Latitude: 381536N, Longitude: 0861332W.

The earliest known burial at Pitman Cemetery is that of Philip Pitman, son of David and Mary Pitman on 11 August 1822, followed by Michael Rager, a native of Strasburg, Virginia, who died on 8 July 1826. However, given the number of unmarked graves and the few remaining fieldstones in this graveyard, it is possible burials occurred prior to 1822. At the time of this writing, the last person to be interred at the cemetery was Mrs. Rose Mary Rosenbarger, who passed away on 27 November 2001. This cemetery is still in use today.

My wife and I made our first visit to Pitman Cemetery on Thursday, 24 July 2003. At that time we had been recording information from several cemeteries within the township. It was during this period we decided to record and photograph all the graves and headstones in the cemetery. From this information, I decided to write a book about this cemetery and the people interred here. The book contains not the only contains photographs of each headstone and related information, but also the genealogy of each person interred at this cemetery. Note: Many of the key persons interred at Pitman cemetery originated from Shenandoah County, Virginia. For example: Benjamin Windle, Jacob Grabill, Anthony Baker, David & Joseph Pitman, John Engleman, Abraham & Philip Rosenbarger, Benjamin Borden, George W. Walk, and Jacob Fawver, just to name a few.

Information was collected starting with the first row, which runs parallel with Moberly Road, and the first grave located at the most northern point of the first row. Information was recorded working each row from north to south. In other words, when standing on Moberly Road and facing the cemetery, each row was worked from left (north) to right (south). Row 11 is the back of the cemetery adjacent to the farm-field.
