POTATO
RUN CHURCH CEMETERY

Harrison Township, Harrison County, Indiana

Submitted by Kevin Conrad

The Potato Run Church Cemetery is located about 10 miles west of Corydon, off State Road 462 and situated within the boundaries of the Harrison State Forest, in Harrison Township (former Scott Township) of Harrison County, Indiana. The church and adjacent cemetery is located at the end of a narrow gravel road known as Potato Run Cemetery Road. Geographically, this graveyard is located in the Southwest ¼ of the Northeast ¼, in Section 10, Township-4-South, Range-2-East.

Adjacent to the cemetery is the Potato Run United Brethren (U.B.) Chapel, established in 1886, which still conducts Sunday worship and Wednesday evening prayer service. According to the 1876 “Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Indiana,” by Baskin, Forster & Co., Chicago, Illinois, a house of worship has existed at this location prior to 1876. The earliest known burial in this cemetery occurred on December 16, 1832, upon the death of Ann Elizabeth, daughter of Manuel & Mary Lamon. The next earliest known burial occurred on March 20, 1835 upon the death of  Cyrus A., son of William W. Craig and his wife, Sarah C. Brown. However, given the number of fieldstones at this cemetery, burials may have occurred prior to 1832.

On Friday, December 27, 2002, Kevin and Angie Conrad photographed and recorded the names and other pertinent information from each gravestone within the cemetery. The data was collected in a systematic approach, beginning with the first identifiable grave, in the first row, located at the south-west corner of the cemetery and working in a easterly direction [from west to east].  Or simply stated: when facing the cemetery with the chapel to your left, we started at the first recognizable grave in the right-hand corner (SW).  The rows in the cemetery run in a lateral direction from west to east. The chapel’s parking lot is located on the west end. The cemetery is bordered with woods on the north and south ends. The cemetery grounds is always found moved and trimmed; however, the physical state of many of the grave markers is poor. Due to the numerous headstones broken and laying over, this cemetery would be a good candidate for restoration.
