JAY COUNTY, INDIANA
THE
UNUSUAL DIARY OF PLENNA BICKEL
On
Sept. 21. 1936
the Portland Commercial-Review and Portland Daily
Sun published identical special editions marking the 100th anniversary
of the organization of Jay County. Indiana.
One article. "Unusual Dairy
of Plenna Bickel. Deceased. Is Published." consists almost entirely of
names and dates. The editor wrote this introduction:
Among the personal
possessions of
Plenna Bickel. who died recently at
the home of his daughter. Mrs. Daisy Knoll at College Corner is an
unusual diary. More than one-third of a century ago. Mr. Bickel began
recording the dates when pioneer citizens of Jay county and prominent
persons passed To their eternal rest.
While it's not a
complete record of
all of the pioneer citizens of the
county it shows a great amount of work on the pan of the aged man.
Verifications show
that the dales are remarkable for their accuracy. Many residents of the
county will
recognize the names of loved relatives in the list and it is for their
benefit that
the names arc published.
As Mr. Bickel saw
his boyhood friends
and comrades join the ranks of
the departed he probably thought of the words of the poet when he
said:
Sustained and soothed by an
Unfaltering Trust.
Approach thy grave
like one who wraps the
Drapery of his couch about him
And lies down to pleasant dreams.
Bickel died at age
88 on 30 January
1927 more than nine years before
the newspapers published his diary. Containing 500 names. The diary
actually spans 42W years — from March 1881 28 when Bickel noted the
death of Daniel Smith to 29 November 1923. the date of death of George
McCartney. By
the 1920s Bickel was in his eighties. He recorded only two deaths in
1920 only five in 1921 and only McCartney's in 1923.
Two dates were
recorded long after
the fact. In late 1890 or early
1891 Bickel jotted down the date of death of his uncle George Bickel
(13 April 1877). Between 10 and 11 December 1893 he recorded the date
of death of his grandfather Thomas Bickel (13 August 1844).
Bickel also
recorded dates of death
for his parents; his wife Nancy
(Harkins) Winegardner Bickel; her parents; his uncles John Jacob and
George Bickel and his aunts Marian (Bickel) Money Polly (Clear)
Bickel and Margaret (Imel) Tharp Bickel. Curiously he recorded 23
January 1894 as the date of death of his father Adam Bickel. Jay
County death records and Adam Bickel's tombstone in Antioch Cemetery
show that he actually died 5 January 1894.
Plenna Bickel's
grandparents Thomas Bickel (1793-1844) and his wife Barbara (Shaffer)
Bickel came from Preble County Ohio between 1833 and 1835 to what
then was Randolph County but in 1836 became Jay County. The Jay County
tract book shows that George Bickel son of Thomas and uncle of Plenna
bought 40 acres in Pike Township on 21 December 1835. Thomas Bickel
entered 40-acre tracts there on 14 and 18 July 1836. Sons John and
Jacob (James) also entered 40-acres tracts there John on 4 December
1837 and James on 18 August 1838.
The Bickels are
German. Thomas
Bickel's ancestors came to Virginia in
the early 18th century and migrated to Center County Pa. About 1804
Bickel moved to Ohio. While there he was a soldier in the War of 1812.
As noted Bickel died in Jay County in 1844 and is buried in the
Hawkins Cemetery the oldest burial ground in Jay County. In 1860
Barbara Bickel then 69 was living in Pike Township with her
son-in-law and daughter George and Anna (Bickel) Isenhart. Later she
lived in Marshall or St. Joseph County Ind. with another daughter
Sarah Jane Eley and died there.
Papers filed in
Thomas Bickel's
estate on 21 August 1845 (see pages 216
and 309 Probate Order Book A Clerk's Office) give the family name as
Bickel a common variant and show that he was survived his widow and
12 children — George (1804-1877) Barbara 1806 Adam (1807-1894) Lucy
Elizabeth (Betsey) Clear (1808) John (1813-1893) James (1816-1888)
Katharine
(Katie) Green (1817) Marian Money (1819-1905) Thomas (1821) Sarah
Jane (Sally) (1823) Anna (1825) and Henry Jackson (1827). One source
mentions a 13th child Rachel possibly the Bickels' oldest but
nothing is known about her.
In 1845 all 12
living children
resided in Jay County. Half remained
there including George who married 1) Nancy Glassford and 2) Margaret
(Imel) Tharp; Adam who married Mary Jane maiden name unknown; John
who married Polly Clear; James who married 1) Melinda Brooks and 2)
Miriam Evans; Katharine who married William Green; and Marian Bickel
who married David Money. Sarah Jane Bickel who married 1) Adam Loy and
2)_ Eley later resided in Marshall or St. Joseph County. Anna Bickel
who married 1) William Isenhart and 2)__Hary later resided in
southwestern Illinois. Henry J. Bickel later resided in Starke County
Ind. Nothing else is
known about Barbara Bickel Lucy Elizabeth (Bickel) Clear and Thomas
Bickel.
Born in Preble
County Ohio on 23
December 1839 Plenna Bickel
was one of Adam and Mary Jane Bickel's nine children. Like his father
and grandfather he was a Pike Township farmer. In Jay County on 7
April 1870 he married Nancy (Harkins) Winegardner daughter of his
family's neighbors Daniel and Elizabeth Harkins. By her first husband
John Winegardner Nancy Harkins had twins John (1858-1931) and
Elizabeth who were reared by their stepfather. Plenna and Nancy Bickel
had four children together — Seymour H. and Pavy Bickel Clara Bickel
later Mrs. George Maxwell and Daisy Bickel later Mrs. Daniel Knoll.
Nancy Bickel died
in Jay County on
July 2 1917. Plenna Bickel died 10
years later at the home of Mrs. Knoll. The Bickels are buried in
Antioch Cemetery southeast of Portland.
The newspaper's
use of the word
"comrades" hints that Bickel served in
the military service. His obituary says he enlisted on 23 December
1863 in Company C 25th 25th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
However Dr. M. W. Montgomery's 1864 Jay County history shows "Pliny
Bickle" as a recruit in Company E 89th Indiana Infantry. The Indiana
State Archives' grave registration card file shows him serving in
Company I 20th Indiana Infantry. Bickel probably transferred to new
units as his old ones were mustered out at war's end. He was discharged
on 15 January 1866 at Vicksburg Miss. well after the war ended.
In his diary
Bickel notes dates of
death for more than 50 Civil War
soldiers from Jay County. Many served in units raised in the Portland
area - the 39th Indiana Infantry (8th Indiana Cavalry); Company B 34th
Indiana Infantry; Company F 75th Indiana Infantry; Company E
89th Indiana Infantry; Company H 100th Indiana Infantry; the 119th
Indiana Infantry (7th Indiana Cavalry) and Company B 11th Indiana
Cavalry. His diary also contains a sprinkling of names from the 19th
36th 69th and 130th Indiana Infantry regiments and the 40th Ohio
Infantry Regiment which also drew recruits from the Portland area.
Most soldiers
whose names Bickel
recorded in his diary were privates. A
few were officers or noncommissioned officers. However he noted the
deaths of these local notables:
John Peter Cleaver
Shanks (1826-1901)—Born 7 June
1826 Martinsburg
Va. (now W.Va.). Grandson of a Revolutionary War soldier son of a War
of 1812 veteran. Came with parents to Jay County 1840. Admitted to
bar. 1850. Helped found first Portland newspaper (Portland Journal)
1851. Elected to Indiana House of Representatives 1854; U.S. House
1860. While member of Congress fought as volunteer Battle of Bull
Run. Declined President Lincoln's offer of appointment as brigadier
general. Raised 119th Indiana Infantry (7th Indiana Cavalry). Appointed
to 7th Cavalry regimental staff. Breveted as brigadier general 1864;
major general 1865. Later served U.S. House 1866-1875; Indiana House
1878- 79. Practiced law Portland. Married I) Deborah Wilson 2) Huldah
Hearn and 3) Magdalene Oswalt. Died 22 February 1901 Portland.
Louis
J. Bruner (1838-1912)—Born 6 October 1838 Monroe County Ind. one of
six sons of a Methodist minister. Briefly in Company E 66th Indiana
Infantry before serving three years in Company H 5th Indiana Cavalry.
Won Congressional Medal of Honor for volunteering 2 December 1863 at
Walkers Ford Tenn. to go through enemy lines to warn a battalion of
Union soldiers of their imminent danger of capture. His act of heroism
allowed the battalion to withdraw to safety. Returned to Indiana after
the war and taught. Came to Portland in 1883. In late 1884 having been
admitted to the bar began representing former soldiers in pressing
pension and other veterans' benefit claims. Awarded Medal of Honor 33
years after the fact 9 March 1896. Died Jan. 28 1912. (Bickel
incorrectly gives his first name as Lewis.)
One diary entry is
not a death. On 2
July 1881 Bickel laconically
recorded that "Garfield was shot." That is the date on which an
assassin shot James A. Garfield (1831-1881) 20 th president of the
United States. Garfield lived about 11 more weeks dying 19September
1891.
Bickel correctly
recorded dates of
death for Union General Winfield
Scott Hancock (1824-1886) the 1880 Democratic nominee for president
who died 9 February 1886; Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) 23rd President
of the United States who died 13 March 1901; Thomas A. Hendricks
former U.S. Congressman and Senator former Governor of Indiana and
former Vice President of the United States who died 25 November 1885;
Confederate General Joseph (Fighting Joe) Wheeler who died 25 January
1906; temperance crusader Carry (Carrie in the diary) Nation who died
9 June 1911 and famed preacher Henry Ward Beecher who died 8 March
1887.
The date of death
of William McKinley
(1843-1901) 25th president
appears in the newspaper with no month an obvious typographical error.
(The correct date is 14 September 1901.)
Bickel made some
errors in his
notations. He wrote down July 24 1908
as the date of death of Stephen Grover Cleveland 22nd and 24th
president. The accepted date is September 24 1908. Bickel has U.S.
Senator John Worth Kern Of Indiana the Democratic nominee for
president in 1908 dying 10 August 1917. He died 17 August 1917. Bickel
noted 16 February 1904. as the date of death for Senator Mark Hanna of
Ohio but he died a day earlier. Bickel has General William T. Sherman
dying 14 February 1891. He died 14 February
1891. These all
could be
typographical errors. However Bickel probably
recorded the day obituaries appeared in his local newspaper and that
meant some of his dates were a day or two late.
In an overall
sense Bickel's diary is
accurate.
The dairy's dates
provide a starting
point for genealogical research
for each individual. The following alphabetized list contains all 500
names in Bickel's dairy. Months were abbreviated. The only other change
is the order of the names.
