Lawrence County, Indiana
Established in 1818

 

Lawrence County was named for Captain James Lawrence,
who uttered the famous words "Don't give up the ship"
after being mortally wounded during the War of 1812.

Bedford is the County Seat

 Home of astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom, one of the seven original NASA astronauts.

Oolitic

A building material "oolitic limestone" which the town is built upon provided the name.
Quarrying oolitic limestone was the purpose for founding Oolitic.
