INDIANA TRAILS MADISON COUNTY

Kill Buck - Chief, Remains located in Madison Co., Indiana

I am not researching Kill Buck, but thought this obituary might be of interest to anyone searching for information about him as it does relate to his burial location.

There were two courthouse fires in Anderson, Indiana which destroyed the birth, death and marriage records. Several Individuals, concerned with preserving what information they could, combed through available newspapers and recorded what they could as these records were not commonly published.

This obituary was taken from the book Madison County, Indiana Birth, Death and Marriage Records, which is located in the Anderson Public Library, Anderson, IN. This is a hard-bound book, but the information in it was hand typed: The grave of Kill Buck – on the farm of William Sparks situated about a quarter of a mile North West of the cemetery upon an elevated piece of ground is said to repose the remains of Kill Buck, a noted chief of the Indians who dwelt here and for whom the little body of water running through the north part of the county known as Kill Buck Creek was named. March 2, 1871.

I considered it odd enough information it needed to be posted for researchers. I received the response below the data from a woman whose ancestor was slain by Kill Buck and adds more background.
Due to two confirmed courthouse fires in Madison Co., IN, the local genealogists combed through newspapers and copied or transcribed everything they could find regarding any person mentioned in the papers.

A response, dated 11/20/2004:

Dear Ms. McKee: What a surprise to learn where Kill-Buck is interred. My husbands's 7th gr. grandfather was captured and quartered by Chief Kill-Buck and some of his braves of which Vincent Williams killed five of them and was then slain in 1757 in West Virginia. It is written up in the Congressional Library and Kill-Buck was captured in Sciota, Ohio and interviewed there by Vincent Williams' son and step son Ben Cassey. I have read in on Ohio History that he went to college but have not been able to research that to any length. I thank you for your article as it was a finish to his fate for us. Sincerely, Gwen Williams
