Welcome to Genealogy Trails of

Monroe County, Indiana

Monroe County was named in honor of our 5th president, James Monroe.  The county boundaries were formed on the 10th of April 1818 from territory then included in Orange county.  The county seat Bloomington was first settled in 1819.  The location was determined by the U.S. Census Bureau to include the mean center of the U. S. population in 1910.  The population has grown from 2,679 in 1820 to 120,563 in 2000.
