ELECTED
OFFICIALS OF MORGAN COUNTY, INDIANA, 1822 - 1836
Morgan
County, Indiana was formed by
action of the Indiana Legislature, December 31, 1821, to become
effective February 15, 1822.
On the 1st of January, 1822, James
Bigger was commissioned Sheriff of the new county by the Governor, and
empowered to call an election for four Justices of the Peace, one Clerk
and Recorder, and two Associate Judges; but as he failed, in some
manner, to do as directed, his commission was dropped or revoked, and
Benjamin Cutler was commissioned on the 16th of January, 1822, to take
his place and call the necessary election.
This election was held early
in 1822.
1822

Sheriff of Morgan County [Bigger was recommended for the appointment by
John Tipton and Eli Dixon, but refused to accept it. He recommended
Benjamin Cutler].

August 10 - [The returns of sheriff
and coroner were made on the same sheet with the Congressional returns
in a number of other counties. This may account for the fact no
commissions were recorded for a number of these offices. Returns have
been found for a number of these offices. Returns have been found for
the following officers elected in August 1822: Morgan County, Thomas
L. Galpin, sheriff; John Tiffany, coroner (commissions issued September
13 according to the endorsement on the returns); In addition the
endorsement on the Morgan County return shows John Matthews was
commissioned trustee of the public seminary on September 13, 1822.

September 8 - Thomas Galpin
commissioned Sherriff.
December 2 - Samuel Reed commisioned
Associate judge of the Circuit court ..Vice John Gray resigned.
[Gray’s resignation as associate judge was filed with the clerk of
Morgan County on July 7, 1824. Reed was elected on November 8. Election
Returns, July and November, 1824.]

[Robert C. Stotts was commissioned
on June 30, 1825, according to an endorsement on the return of his
election. June, 1825.]

June 12 - Barclay Burns is
commissioned a justice of the peace.
August 14 - John Matthews is
commissioned a justice of the peace.
August 14 - Abraham Fletcher is
commissioned a justice of the peace.

commissioned Sherriff.
August 18 - Samuel Scott commissioned
Coroner.
[March 23] - Writ is issued requiring
the election of an associate judge ... on the 1 St Monday in January
next vice Samuel Reed removed. [Reed, wrote the sheriff on November 13,
1826, had left the county ”last winter” for New Orleans and had not
returned, leaving the county greatly inconvenienced for want of a
second associate judge.

(Whicker’s) election for Brown Township, Robert Ervin was also reported

[Vest was elected vice William Lambert,
resigned. April, 1832. No record of Lambert’s election and commission
has been found.]

[On the return reporting the
election of Newton for Jefferson Township, David Burnes was reported
elected a justice of the peace for Washington Township. June, 1832.

March 2 - A Writ is issued for the
election of a Clerk to file the vacancy Occasioned by the death of
George A. Phelps, to be held on the 1 St Monday of April next. [Phelps
died on February 23, 1833, according to a notice sent by the sheriff to
Governor Noble.]
April 8 - Hannibal R. Stevens is
Commissioned Clerk of the Circuit Court, vice George A. Phelps,
deceased, for seven years from 15th of March 1829.
