Parke County Indiana Genealogy Trails

Index - Death Book D-1

This is the oldest Death Record Book for Parke County, Indiana and hopefully will prove to be a valuable tool to Parke County researchers since the 1890 census was destroyed by fire.  I was surprised to learn that it was not included in the W. P. A. (Works Progress Administration) Index - so as far as I know this is the first index for these 700+ deaths. 

The handwriting was difficult to read and so this is my best guess on the spelling of some of the names.  If I still wasn't sure I inserted a question mark.  Rockville, Montezuma and Rosedale deaths were recorded separately at the back of the book - so the books skips pages 104 to 189, then skips pages 198 to 244 and finally skips pages 250 to 289 for those entries.

Remember compliance of reporting deaths was not 100 percent until well after 1900.  So don't give up hope if you don't find your ancestor listed here - local newspapers, church or Funeral Home records are another good source to check.
