H. Sprague died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. James P.
Robbins Thursday, aged 76 years and 9 months. He was born Jasper Hazen
Sprague in Hartford, Vermont on June 6, 1812. He graduated at Norwich
Military University in Vermont in 1836. After graduation he came west,
stopping at Madison, where he secured employment as Assistant Surveyor
of the Madison & Indianapolis Railroads. In 1840 he married Dulcina
Town Sprague. 6 children were born, 2 survive. Date of Death: February

Isaac Watts, age 32 years was
shot and killed by Thomas McBride in a saloon kept by E. L. Piatt on S.
Harrison St. Saturday night. Watts leaves a wife and 2 sons. He came
here about 9 years ago from New Castle, Henry Co., KY and has been in
the employ of John Byers, as a hod carrier. Coroner's Verdict -- I, the
undersigned, Thomas J. Craycraft, a Justice of the Peace of Addison
Township, Shelby Co., IN, acting as Deputy Coroner of said Co., having
held an inquest on the dead body of Isaac Watts on the 30th day of
June, 3889, report that the true name of said deceased person is Isaac
Watts, that at the time of death, he was about 32 years of age, that he
was black in color, of medium physique and 5 feet 7 inches in height,
with a scar on his right hand. That when he died he was dressed in
black vest and pantaloons, and white shirt, and had on his person no
valuables except $2.50 in money and 7 ivory dice. That the death of
said Isaac Watts was caused by a pistol shot fired from a pistol held
by one Thomas McBride, and that said shooting was done intentionally.

a former resident of this City, and a number of years ago he united

G. Collins, a single man, 45 years of age, who lives in
Hendricks Township, was instantly killed Friday evening by a limb
falling from a tree, breaking a leg and arm in 2 places, and crushing
his skull. He was sitting on a log near where several acquaintances
were at work chopping, when the limb, which was about 6 inches thick
& 12 feet long fell on him from the tree above. The Coroner held an

himself through the head with a 32-calibre revolver. Coroner's Verdict

to hold an inquest on the body of Calder Monroe, do find after viewing
the body and hearing the evidence, that the said Monroe came to his
death from his own hands by shooting himself in the throat and head

Major died Monday, age 61 years, with typhoid fever. The Majors
originally came from Normandy, France to England with William the
Conqueror and settled in Scotland. 2 brothers of which afterward
removed to Ireland and located at Granard in the county of Longford.
Here Alfred's father, Stephen Major was born and educated. Stephen went
to Quorndon, Derbyshire, England where he married Miss Harriett Bigsby.
Of this union were born 6 children, Alfred being the 5th child in the
family, his parents residing at Leamington the time of their death.
Alfred Major was born at Quorndon, May 5, 1828. In 1820, his uncle,
Arthur Major, had came to Indiana and entered a large tract of land on
Flat Rock, in Noble Township, Shelby Co., which fell by heirship to
Alfred and his brother, Stephen. Alfred was married in Rushville,
Indiana May 20, 1851 to Miss Jan Lowrey, daughter of William &
Elizabeth Lowrey, natives of Ireland. Mrs. Major was born in
Philadelphia Jan. 1, 1828. The following children were born to her,
William S., Harriett, Elizabeth & Alfred L. Mrs. Major died Nov. 4,
1874. Mr. Major married second on Nov. 28, 1878 to Miss Helen Thompson,

Township. He was born January 27, 1804 in Dearborn Co., IN and
emigrated with his parents to Shelby Co. at about 17 years old. Married

instantly killed Wednesday evening, by being thrown from a horse which

A terrible accident occurred in
Scanlon's Stone Quarry at St. Paul Tuesday, which resulted in the
killing of John Neal and
injuring Timothy Reardon. A blast had failed to explode, and Neal
commenced working around the hole where the cartridge was, to get the
detonating cap out, when it exploded, setting off the dynamite. The
iron bar Neal was using struck him at the root of the nose, passing
clear through his head, its full length and 40 feet in the air.
Notwithstanding the horrible wound, Neal lived about 2 hours. He leaves
a family. Reardon, who was with him escaped with a broken arm, a bad
shaking up and a scare that he hasn't gotten over yet. The remains of
Neal, who was 40 years of age, will be interred at Union Chapel. Date

A terrible accident occurred in
Brandywine Township at noon Sat., near the Widow McDaniel's residence,
by which Albert Tull, the 16
year old son of David Tull, ex-Co. Treasurer, met his death. Young Tull
was out hunting, and in getting over a fence, the gun in some way was
discharged, and he was almost instantly killed. Date of Death: February

A terrible accident happened at
Boggstown Friday afternoon, which caused the death of Rebecca King, an invalid of about 45
years of age, who lived in a small frame house with a man and wife.
During their absence, the house caught fire, burning all its contents,
including the occupant, whose remains were found in the embers. Date of

(Indianapolis Journal) Miss Minnie
Henry, 22 years of age
was fatally burned Monday at her boarding place, No. 92 N. Jersey St.
She had thrown a letter into the grate when her clothing took fire. She
died Monday evening. Her father, John Henry, lives on W. Washington St.
in this City, near the furniture factory. The remains of Miss Minnie
Henry, who was burned to death at Indianapolis Monday, were brought
down on the train Tuesday and taken to the home of her father on
Washington Ave. Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic

(Greensburg) Last evening William S.
Lowe, aged 21 years, son
of Samuel T. Lowe, trustee of Marion Township, went to Milhousen,
riding a Mexican pony. He and a neighbor boy returned together, and
separated a short distance from Lowe's home about midnight. After
passing into a lane leading to his father's house, the pony evidently
became unruly, and threw young Lowe, breaking his neck. Early next
morning the father found the pony near the barn. A search resulted in
finding the son's body lying in the lane, death having been

(Galena Missouri Oracle) Died, at the
residence of Dr. T. J. McCord, in this Co. (Stone), on Friday February
15, 1889, Kate G. Yocum, wife
of B. F. Yocum, aged 57 years. ---Mrs. Yocum's maiden name was
Catherine Gray Morris, and she was born in She.was born in Shelbyville,
IN January 8, 1838 and was married to Benjamin F. Yocum January 4,
1857, soon after removing to Iowa, remaining there until 1878 when they
moved to Galena, Missouri, where they have ever since resided. Source:

(Franklin Star) Zachariah Webb
died Saturday at the
home of his son John Webb, south of this city. Aged 81 years at the
time of his death. He was born April 19, 1808 near Lexington, KY and
came to this state about 1818 and settled in Clark Co. About 1821 he
removed to Shelby Co. He married Nancy A. Hough April 10, 1831. Mrs.
Webb was born near Xenia, Ohio in 1812 and died January 1, 1887. To
them were born a number of children of whom 6 sons and 2 daughters

(Evansville-October 19) Benjamin Moore,
the oldest citizen
of Southern IN, died at the residence of his son, near Chrisney, IN
this morning, in the 108 year of his age. Date of Death: October 19,

(Edinburg) George C. Adams,
ex-town marshall
was visiting a fishing party on Blue River, south of here, attempted to
ride a horse without a bridle. Someone struck the horse, causing it to
run off and dash Mr. Adams against a tree. His skull was fractured,

(Covington, IN) Philander C. Cronkhite,
accidentally
shot himself in the side Wednesday morning, and expired a few hours
later, at the residence of Augustus Cronkhite. Mr. Cronkhite was
married in Shelbyville in 1879 to Mrs. Connor, widow of Wm. Conner a
former attorney of this City. Mrs. Cronkhite was a daughter of Cameron

(Cincinnati) Mr. A. J. Hodson, business partner of Mayor Mosby, died
this morning from the effects of injuries received on the 4th inst.,
while discharging fire works. He was wounded in the face, and although
the wound healed, the shock brought him into a fever from which he
died. His many friends here extend their sympathy to his bereaved
