Corps, Detroit, (exact date not known.) Trained at Parris Island, S.
C., Quantico, Va., and in Cuba. Sailed September 13, 1918; assigned to
1st Battalion, 13th Regiment, U.S. Marine Corps. Died on board ship Von
Sleuben, September 23, 1918, of influenza. Buried in Pleasant Lake
Cemetery, Steuben County, Ind.
BAIR, LEO LOWELL Private
Son of Alvaro and Mary
L. Bair; born
October 5, 1899, Putnam County, Ohio. Moved with parents to a farm near
Angola, Steuben County, Ind. in 1909. Teacher. Entered the Student Army
Training Corps at Tri-State College, Angola, Ind., October 1, 1918.
Died of pneumonia October 24, 1918, Tri-State College. Buried in Circle
Hill Cemetery, Angola, Ind.
BEIGH, EDWARD Private

December 26, 1889, near Helmer, Steuben County, Ind. Employee of
Overland Automobile Company, Toledo, Ohio. Entered service September
15, 1917. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to Motor Transport
Corps, 83rd Division. Overseas in January, 1918. Returned to U.S. July
5, 1919, sick with diphtheria. Died July 21, 1919, Embarkation Hospital
No. 4, New York City. Buried in Block Cemetery, Salem Township, Steuben
County, Ind.
BUSHARD, CARL A. Private
Son of Rebecca Bushard
(Nettleman);
born March 27, 1894, Orland, Steuben County, Ind. Enlisted in Company
B, 3rd Infantry, Indiana National Guard, Angola, August 2, 1917. Became
ill with appendicitis while in camp at Angola; removed to hospital in
Fort Wayne, and died August 11, 1917. Buried at Orland, Steuben County,
Ind.
CASSELL, LEE 1st

Son of Jacob and Ida
Cassell; born
November 18, 1889, Fremont, Steuben County, Ind. Graduated from Chicago
University Medical School in 1914. Practicing medicine in Sweet Grass,
Mont., when he entered service October 12, 1917. Assigned to 130th
Field Ambulance, 10th Battalion. Overseas in May, 1918. While attending
the wounded at first aid station, Englefontaine, France, a shell
dropped near by, killing him instantly, November 4, 1918. The American
Legion Post, Fremont, Ind., named in his honor.

Farmers Co-operative Association, Ashley, Ind. Entered Student Army

Stricken with influenza, he died October 30, 1918. Buried in Circle
Hill Cemetery, Hudson, Steuben County, Ind.

Transferred to Headquarters Troops, 19th Division. Died of influenza
October 19, 1918, Camp Dodge, Iowa. Buried at Pleasant Lake, Ind.

Graduated from Indiana Dental College in 1917. Practicing dentistry in
Orland, Steuben County, when called into service in September, 1918.
Sent to Camp Sheridan, Ala; attached to 27th Machine Gun Battalion.
Died of pneumonia November 14, 1918, Camp Sheridan, Ala. Buried in
Fremont Cemetery, Fremont, Ind.
GURNEY, HARRY S. Private

Gurney; born August 13, 1889, Camden, Mich. Moved to Steuben County,
Ind. in 1910, and settled on a farm in Clear Lake Township. Called into
service in June, 1918. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to Company
M, 333rd Infantry. Transferred to Camp Mills, L. L, and then overseas;
assigned to the Eighty-Fourth Division. Died of pneumonia October 18,
1918. (Place unknown.)

Headquarters Company, 18th Training Battalion, Field Artillery
Replacement Depot. Died of influenza October 14, 1918, Camp Taylor.

Cody. Buried in Jamestown. Cemetery, Steuben County, Ind.

May 5, 1898, Orland, Steuben County, Ind. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army
May 1, 1917; sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Transferred to
Brownsville, Tex.; assigned to Company I, 4th Infantry. Transferred to
Camp Green, N. C. Overseas in May, 1918; assigned to Company I, 59th
Infantry, 4th Division. Killed in action October 6, 1918, near Verdun,
France. Buried in American Military Cemetery, Le Grand Pont, France.
MASTEN, FRANK C. Private

July 16, 1898, Pleasant Lake, Steuben County, Ind. Farmer. Served with
Company B, 3rd Infantry, Indiana National Guard on the Mexican Border
in 1916. Re-enlisted in June, 1917. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss.;
assigned to 137th Field Artillery. Overseas in October, 1918. Died of
pneumonia October 24, 1918, Nell Lane Hospital, Manchester, England.
Body returned to U.S., and buried in Pleasant Lake Cemetery, Steuben
County, Ind.

Parrish; born April 26, 1894, Angola, Ind. Enlisted in U.S. Regular
Army, July 11, 1917, Fort Wayne, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; then to
Camp Greene, S. C. Assigned to Medical Corps. Overseas in May, 1918;
assigned to 28th Ambulance Company, 4th Division. While giving first
aid to his bunk mate on the field in the Argonne Forest, he was killed
by a bomb dropped from a German airplane, October 15, 1918.

cartoonist, Lansing, (Mich.) State Journal. Enlisted in U.S. Regular
Army in April, 1917, Lansing, Mich. Sent to Camp McArthur, Tex.;
assigned to Reconnaissance Section, map-drawing. Overseas in February,
1918; assigned to 119th Field Artillery. Wounded in action August 12,
1918, and died two days later. (Place unknown.)

Michigan Medical School, 1913. Moved to Hamilton, Ind. same year, and

later. Attached to 5th Cameron Highlanders Regiment. Killed in action
September 26, 1918, Poperinghe, West Flanders. Awarded British Military
Cross for bravery. Buried, Haringhe, Belgium. Survived by widow, Lou H.
Ransom, and two children, Dale Nelson, and Elwyn Glenn Ransom, Ann
Arbor, Mich.
REX, ERNEST PAUL Private

Ind. when he was called into service July 22, 1918, Coldwater, Mich.

Artillery. Died of pneumonia October 9, 1918, Camp Custer, Mich.

Cemetery, Angola, Ind.

he was ordered home and died December 23, 1918 from disease contracted
while in service. Buried near his home in Richland Township, Steuben
County.
