In this county his farm of 600 acres is located, and he manages the
whole of it, pursuing mixed arming with profit and pleasure.

Depredations of Indiana Wheat Thieves
South Bend, Indiana, September 3 – The farmers of St. Joseph County, in
the vicinity of South Bend, are excited over the lawlessness and
depredations of wheat thieves.
The boldness of the robbers is surprising. About a week since, on
one of the avenues of the city, early in the morning, thirteen sacks of
wheat were piled up on the sidewalk lawn. An investigation showed
that the wheat belonged to a dairyman living a short distance in the
country. No clue to thieves were found.
Monday night the robbers visited the farm of a carpenter and stole a
team of large gray horses and a wagon and forty-five bushels of wheat.
The sheriff was notified and a search revealed the wheat sacked and
nicely piled just out of the city limits. Tracks in the road
indicted that the team and wagon had gone toward Michigan.
Soon after the wheat was discovered a suspicious looking character was
seen handling a round carpenter’s piece. He was arrested, and
wheat being found in his pockets he was put in jail, but nothing
definite can be learned of him.
