1918, Sullivan, Ind. Sent to Camp Grant, Ill.; assigned to Company C,
161st Depot Brigade. Contracted pneumonia, and died October 7, 1918,
Camp Grant. Buried in Shepherd Cemetery, seven miles southwest of
Carlisle, Ind.

Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service June 23, 1918,
Sullivan, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to Medical
Detachment, 334th Infantry. Sailed overseas September 2, 1918. Final
assignment, Medical Supply Storage Station. Died of appendicitis May
13, 1919, Bordeaux, France. Buried in Shepherd Cemetery, seven miles
southwest of Carlisle, Ind.
ALLEN, ORVAL CLEO -Private
Son of Henry H. and Martha A. Allen;
born April 20, 1895, Willow Hill,
Ill. Moved to Sullivan County, Ind. in 1905. Farmer. Entered service in
April, 1918 in Iowa. Sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa; assigned to Company D,
Machine Gun Company. Transferred to Camp Travis, Tex. Embarked from
Camp Mills, N. Y. June, 1918. Wounded September 14, 1918, near Toul.
Died of wounds September 15, 1918, at Emergency Hospital No.1, near
Toul. Buried in Cemetery No. 108, at Sebastopol Barracks, France.
ANDERSON, JAMES ARTHUR -Sapper
Son of Commodore P. and Rose Douglas
Anderson; born January 22, 1896,
Fairbanks Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Enlisted in the U.S. Regular
Army in 1914, Terre Haute, Ind. Entered Canadian Army at the beginning
of the War. Trained at Victoria, British Columbia. Overseas in August,
1916; assigned to 10th Canadian Railway Troops. Died of nephritis March
9, 1918, Canadian General Hospital No. 16, Orphington, Kent. Buried in
Soldiers' Corner of Orphington Parish Churchyard.
BEDWELL, EVERETT -Private
Son of Calvin S. and Cora Bedwell;
born February 10, 1888,
Pleasantville, Sullivan County, Ind. Miner. Entered service May 26,
1918, Pleasantville, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Transferred to West
Point, Ky.; assigned to Battery A, 327th Field Artillery. Embarked from
Camp Mills, N. Y., September 9, 1918. Died of pneumonia October 7,
1918, in Base Hospital. (Place not known.) Buried in American Cemetery,
Grave No. 21, Martignas, Gironde, France.
BIRD, ROBERT LEON -Private

born August 8, 1893, Rockdale, Owen
County, Ky. Moved to Sullivan County, Ind., in 1898. Farmer. Entered
service July 25, 1918, Sullivan, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.;
assigned to 39th Company, 10th Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade.
Transferred to 140th Observation Battery, Field Artillery. Contracted
pneumonia and died October 6, 1918, Camp Taylor, Ky. Buried in Center
Ridge Cemetery, Sullivan County, Ind.

Branson, foster parents); born November 3, 1882, near Farmersburg,
Sullivan County, Ind. Graduate of Protestant Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.
1906. In charge of Child's Welfare Department, at Fordham Hospital, New
York, and a student at Columbia University. Enlisted as Red Cross Nurse
September 1, 1918, New York. Preparing to go overseas when she became
ill, and died of influenza October 21, 1918, New York City. Buried near
Farmersburg, Sullivan County, Ind.
COFFMAN, SCOTT -Seaman, 2nd Class
Son of John S. and Mary Scott
Coffman; born June 18, 1889, Turman
Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Navy June 23,
1918, Terre Haute, Ind. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station,
Ill.; where he died of pneumonia October 2, 1918. Buried in Center
Ridge Cemetery, Sullivan County, Ind.
COOPER, CHARLES EDWARD -Private

Cooper; born November 10, 1890,
Carlisle, Sullivan County, Ind. Farmer, Entered service July 1, 1918,
Sullivan, Ind. Sent to Valparaiso, Ind.; assigned to Company C,
Training Detachment. Transferred 46th Service Company, Signal Corps,
Burlington, Vt.; then to Chemical Warfare Service, Neola Park,
Cleveland, Ohio, where he died of influenza December 8, 1918. Buried,
Carlisle, Sullivan County, Ind.

Spencer County, Ind. Moved to Sullivan County in 1917. Coal miner.
Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army June 19, 1918, Clinton, Ind. Sent to
Jefferson Barracks, Mo.; assigned to 23rd Recruiting Company, General
Service, Infantry. Died of pneumonia October 6, 1918, Jefferson
Barracks, Mo. Buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Jefferson Township,
Sullivan County, Ind.
DIAL, CHARLES OTIS -Private
Son of Stephen E. and Lucinda A.
Dial; born March 7, 1893, Boonville,
Warrick County, Ind. Automobile mechanic. Entered service September 23,
1917, Detroit, Mich. Sent to Camp Custer, Mich. Overseas July 22, 1918;
assigned to Company M, 339th Infantry, 85th Division. Sent to
Archangel, Russia, where he was killed in action March 31, 1919.
Buried, Carlisle, Indiana. Survived by widow, Anna A. Rogers Dial,
Detroit, Mich.
DOUTHITT, RAYMOND EDWIN

County, Ind. Graduate of Franklin College. Enlisted in the U.S. Marine
Corps June 20, 1918, Indianapolis, Ind. Sent to Boston Institute of
Technology. Died of influenza and pneumonia September 21, 1918, Gallops
Island, Marine Hospital, Boston, Mass Buried in Center Ridge Cemetery,
Sullivan, Ind.
JEWELL, WINFIELD GARFIELD -Corporal

Jewell; born April 22, 1882,
Fairbanks Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in U.S.
Regular Army January 11, 1904, Terre Haute, Ind. Served on Mexican
Border with Company D, 30th Infantry. Sent to Ft. Screven, Ga.;
assigned to Coast Artillery Corps. Transferred to Syracuse, N. Y.; sent
to France with Company M, 23rd Infantry, 2nd Division. Killed in action
at Soissons, July 19, 1918. Buried in American Sector Cemetery,
Soissons, France.

Laughery; born July 10, 1888, Clark
County, Ill. Moved to Sullivan County, Ind., 1902; later years spent in
Illinois. Automobile mechanic. Entered service May 28, 1918, Robinson,
1ll. Sent to Camp Gordon, Ga. Overseas August 28, 1918; assigned to
322nd Machine Gun Battalion; transferred to Company B, 112th Machine
Gun Battalion, 29th Division. Killed in action October 15, 1918, Bois
de Consenvoye, France. Buried in Argonne- American Cemetery, Romagne,
France.
LEACH, HARRY -Private
Son of Lev! B. and Ida Ritchey Leach;
born January 28, 1896, Sullivan
County, Ind. Coal miner. Entered service March 28, 1918, Sullivan, Ind.
Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 32nd Company, 8th Training
Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y.
Overseas in May, 1918; assigned to Company B, 47th Infantry, 4th
Division. Killed in action October 7, 1918, in the Meuse- Argonne
Offensive. Buried in the Argonne Forest, near where he fell.

Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service May 26, 1918,
Sullivan, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 5th Company, 2nd
Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Overseas August 6, 1918;
assigned to Company G, 125th Infantry, 32nd Division. Fought at
Kriemhilde, and Verdun. Killed in action October 14, 1918. (Place of
death and burial not known.)
McCLANAHAN, GUY STEPHEN -Yeoman

McClanahan; born September 13,
1894, Curry Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Attended Indiana State
Normal. Railway telegrapher. Enlisted in U.S. Navy June 5, 1917, Terre
Haute, Ind. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill.; assigned
to War Risk Insurance Department, and transferred to U.S. Naval
Station, Washington, D. C. Died of pneumonia August 25, 1918 at the
Naval Hospital. Buried at Farmersburg, Ind.
MARTIN, CHARLES ANDREW (WINKLER)

1895, Fairbury, Ill. Came to Sullivan County, Ind. in 1902. Enlisted in
U.S. Marines May 17, 1917, Chicago, Ill. Trained at Parris Island, S.
C., and Quantico, Va.; assigned to 79th Company, 6th Regiment, 4th
Division. Transferred to 2nd Division. Overseas in January, 1918.
Killed in action June 8, 1918, Chateau Thierry, France. Buried at
Bouresches, Aisne, France.
NORRIS, WILLIAM -Private
Son of Whitman (deceased) and Mary
Norris; born January 1, 1894, Turman
Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Laborer. Entered service May 27, 1918,
Sullivan County, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Transferred to Camp
Beauregard, La. Overseas August 7, 1918; assigned to Company F, 125th
Infantry, 32nd Division. Died of wounds October 4, 1918, received in
the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Buried in Communal Cemetery, Epinonville,
(Meuse) France. Survived by widow, Anna Norris, and one son, Floyd
Edward Norris.
NOWLIN, ROY DOUGLAS -Private

1886, Turman Township, Sullivan County, Ind. Clerk. Entered service
July 26, 1918, Sullivan County, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned
to 39th Company, 10th Training Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade;
transferred to 9th Company, 3rd Development Battalion. Contracted
pneumonia, and died October 19, 1918, Camp Taylor, Ky. Buried in Mann
Cemetery, Turman Township, Sullivan County.
RUSSELL, CHARLES TOBERT -Private

Russell; born August 20. 1897, near
Carbon, Clay County, Ind. Moved to Sullivan County in 1893. Farmer.
Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 3, 1918, Terre Haute, Ind. Sent to
Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Overseas in April, 1918; assigned to Battery E,
18th Cavalry (Battery E, 76th Field Artillery) 3rd Division. Wounded
October 4, 1918, at Montfaucon, and died the same day. Buried in
Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France.
SHEPHERD, WILLIAM WARRAN -Private

Shepherd; born March 4, 1889, near
Hymera, Sullivan County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service September 22,
1917, Sullivan County, Ind. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss. Overseas July
12, 1918; assigned to Company L, 166th Infantry, 42nd (Rainbow)
Division. Killed in action July 30, 1918 in Chateau-Thierry Sector.
Buried in American Cemetery No. 608, Seringes-et-Nesles, Aisne.
WEST, BEN ALLSTON -Private

West; born June 4, 1894. Eufaula,
Ala. Moved to Cass, Sullivan County, Ind. in 1907. Student at Indiana
University. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 4, 1917, Jefferson
Barracks, Mo. Sent to Vancouver Barracks, Wash.; assigned to 14th
Infantry, (unassigned). Died of spinal meningitis June 7, 1917,
Vancouver, Wash. Buried in Hickory Cemetery, Sullivan County, Ind.
