Farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 23, 1918, Woonsocket, S. D.
Sent to Jefferson Barracks, Mo.; transferred to Ft. Constitution, N.
H.; assigned to 10th Company, Coast Artillery Corps. Later assigned to
Battery B, 73rd Coast Artillery Corps. Sent to Camp Mills, N. Y. for
embarkation, where he died of pneumonia October 14, 1918. Buried in
North Manchester, Ind.
ASHPAUGH, LORIN LAMOIN .....Private
Son of Leonard and Millie Ashpaugh
(Flora); born December 18, 1895, Roann, Wabash County, Ind. Farmer.
Entered service September 20, 1917, Dorchester, Neb. Sent to Camp
Funston, Kans.; assigned to Company M, 355th Infantry, 89th Division.
Transferred to Camp Stewart, Va. Sailed for France April 9, 1918.
Killed in action July 27, 1918, Chateau Thierry. Buried on battlefield
in Division Cemetery.

1896, Grand Rapids, Mich. Musician. Entered service August 24, 1918,
Wabash, Ind. Sent to Camp Dodge, Iowa; assigned to Headquarters
Company, 809th Pioneer Infantry. Sailed overseas September 23, 1918.
Died of broncho-pneumonia October 10, 1918, St. Nazaire, France. Buried
in Cemetery, Marion, Ind. Survived by widow, Beatrice M. Baber, and
son, Benjamin Shubert Baber, Jr.
BETTEN, JOHN.....Private
Son of George and Anna Betten; born
October 20, 1893. Matamora, Ill. Family moved to Wabash County, Ind.
(date unknown). Farmer. Entered service June 24, 1918, Bloomington,
Ill. Sent to Camp Wheeler, Ga.; assigned to Company A, 123rd Infantry.
Transferred to Camp Mills, N. Y. Embarked for overseas, but was found
to be ill and returned to hospital at Hoboken, N. J., where he died of
influenza October 19, 1918. Buried in Laketon Cemetery, Wabash County,
Ind.

January 23, 1896, Wabash, Ind. Foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. N. W.
Isgrigg. Farmer. Entered service October 6, 1917, Wabash, Ind. Sent to
Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to Company C, 151st Infantry. Transferred to
Camp Shelby, Miss.; assigned to Company K, 26th Infantry; later to
Company A, 162nd Infantry. Sailed overseas June 11, 1918. Killed in
action July 18, 1918, near Soissons. (Place of burial not known.)
CASSADAY, RALPH McGLIN .... Private
Son of Louis C. and Sarah C. Cassaday; born December 14, 1893, Andrews,
Wabash County, Ind. Moved to Wabash at an early age. Employee of Wabash
Cabinet Company. Entered service April 26, 1918, Wabash, Ind. Trained
at Camp Taylor, Ky.; and Camp Custer, Mich.; assigned to Company M,
337th Infantry. Overseas in July, 1918. Transferred to Company A, 7th
Infantry, 3rd Division. Killed in action October 4, 1918, Septsarges,
near Montfaucon, France. Buried in Argonne-American Cemetery, Romagne.
Survived by widow, Ina G. Cassaday, and daughter, Mary Katherine,
Wabash, Ind.
CLARK, LAYMOND .....Private Son of
Sclbia and Grace A. Clark; born November 22, 1893, near Ijamsville,
Wabash County, Ind. Railroad trackman. Entered service September 22,
1917, Wabash, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Transferred to Camp Shelby,
Miss.; assigned to Company G, 151st Infantry, 38th Division. Embarked
June 11, 1918; assigned to Company K, 162nd Infantry. Re-assigned to
Company F, 16th Infantry, 1st Division. Killed in action July 20, 1918,
near Soissons. Body returned, and buried in Wabash, Ind.
CLESTER, DAVID DANIEL .....Private
Son of Allen and Susanah Clester;
born February 20, 1890, Howard County, Ind. Working on a farm in Wabash
County, when he entered service March 20, 1918, Wabash, Ind. Sent to
Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 19th Company, 5th Training Battalion,
159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Camp Shelby, Miss.; assigned to
Medical Department, Base Hospital. Died of pneumonia December 21, 1918,
Camp Shelby. Buried in Vernon Cemetery, south of Wabash. Survived by
widow, Lillie May Clester, Wabash, Ind.
FRANTZ, CARL Private
Son of Benjamin Franklin and Aldora
Frantz (both deceased); born May 16, 1884, Servia, Wabash County, Ind.
Farmer. Entered service July 22, 1918, Wabash, Ind. Trained at Camp
Taylor, Ky., and Camp McClellan, Ala. Assigned to Battery A, Field
Artillery, 26th Division. Died of pneumonia October 16, 1918, at Camp
McClellan. Buried in Fairview Cemetery, one mile north of Servia,
Wabash County, Ind.

Manchester College. Teacher. Entered service July 26, 1918, Chicago,
1ll. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill.; assigned to
Company 450, Barracks 923. Transferred to Camp Dewey; then to Main
Camp, Chicago, Signal School. Died of pneumonia September 24, 1918,
Great Lakes, Ill. Buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Long Beach, Ca1.
HAHN, HAROLD - - - Private, Canadian
Army Son of Henry and Emma Givins Hahn; born August 27, 1898, Wabash,
Ind. Wisconsin University Agriculture Student. Enlisted in Canadian
Expeditionary Forces, September 3, 1917, British War Office, Chicago,
Ill. Assigned to 54th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Overseas, (date not
known). Killed in action September 27, 1918, while advancing with his
Battalion east of Bourlon Woods. (Place of burial not known.)
HARVEY, BENJAMIN - Private

September 8, 1888, Wabash County, Ind. Paper maker. Entered service
October 22, 1918, Kalamazoo, Mich. Trained at Camp Eustis, Va.;
assigned to Field Artillery. Died of pneumonia November 6, 1918, Camp
Eustis, Va. Buried in La Fontaine Cemetery, La Fontaine, Ind.
HUNTER, HOLMES ------- Private
Son of Nelson G. and Mary L. Hunter;
born October 20, 1893, Wabash, Ind. Educated in Hanover College. Clerk
in Wabash County Loan and Trust Company. Entered service September 20,
1917, Wabash, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; transferred to Camp
Shelby, Miss. Embarked June 11, 1918. Assigned to Company of Military
Specialists; attached to 5th Division. Entered Adjutant General's
Office as clerk after Armistice was signed. Died of pneumonia February
7, 1919, near Mondorf, Luxembourg. Body returned, and buried in Falls
Cemetery, Wabash, Ind.
IHOLTZ, JOHN RUSSELL Private
Son of David and Lue Iholtz (McGath);
born July 2, 1895, North Manchester, Wabash County, Ind. City fireman.
Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army May 17, 1917, Ft. Wayne, Ind. Sent to Ft.
Thomas, Ky.; assigned to Company A, 6th Engineers. Embarked for
overseas December 4, 1917. Gassed and sent to Hospital. Anxious to
rejoin his Company he left the hospital too soon, and fell dead a few
minutes after he reached the Marne Front July 22, 1918. Buried near
where he fell.
KIRBY, BENJAMIN Private
Son of Benjamin F. and Mary J. Kirby;
born March 1, 1895, Pioneer, Wabash County, Ind. Farmer. Entered
service February 23, 1918, Wabash, Ind. Sent to Vancouver Barracks,
Wash.; assigned to Casualty Detachment, Air Service Signal Corps. Final
assignment, 60th Spruce Production Detachment, Bureau of Air Craft
Production. Died of pneumonia January 12, 1919, Vancouver, Wash., on
his way home from camp. Buried at Rich Valley, Wabash County, Ind.
KNAPP, LORIN AUSTIN Private
Son of John and Marietta Knapp; born
January 24, 1892, North Manchester, Wabash County, Ind. Farmer. Entered
service June 24, 1918, Wabash, Ind. Trained at Camp Sherman, Ohio;
assigned to Company L, 334th Infantry, 84th Division. Overseas
September 2, 1918. Died of pneumonia October 29, 1918, Hospital No. 78,
near St. Austere, France. Buried in American Cemetery at Perigueux,
Department of Dordogne. Body to be returned.
LUMAREE, Leroy WHITMORE - Private,

Son of Cornelius and Lida LeRoy
Lumaree; born November 7, 1892, Wabash, Ind. Attended Wabash College.
Insurance business. Enlisted in the U.S. Marines December 13, 1917,
Wabash, Ind. Sent to Parris Island, S. C.; assigned to Company 137, 2nd
Replacement Battalion. Transferred to 45th Company, 5th Marine Corps.
Overseas, (date not known). Killed in action June 25, 1918, Belleau
Woods, France. Buried in Cemetery No. 579, Grave 37, northwest corner
of Bois-de- Belleau, Lercy-le-Bocage, Aisne.
MENDENHALL, EARL Private
Son of David S. and Julia Mendenhall;
born January 9, 1891, Servia, Wabash County, Ind. Baker. Entered
service July 22, 1918, Wabash, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned
to 30th Company, 8th Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Final assignment
6th Company, Development Battalion No. 2, Camp Knox, Ky. Died of
cardiac dilation of heart November 4, 1918, Knox Branch, Ky. Buried in
La Fontaine Cemetery, La Fontaine, Ind. The Mendenhall-Taylor Post of
American Legion, La Fontaine, Ind., named in his honor.
MILLER, JOHN H. - Private
Son of John and Merilla Miller; born
January 5, 1896, in Paw Paw Township, Wabash County, Ind. Farmer.
Entered service October 6, 1917, Wabash, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.
Transferred to Camp Shelby, Miss.; assigned to 139th Field Artillery.
Transferred to Bristol, Pa.; assigned to United States Guards, Company
C, 12th Battalion. Accidentally drowned July 24, 1918, in Bristol
Canal. Buried in Friends Cemetery, near Wabash, Ind. Survived by widow,
Esther Miller, and son Paul Grayston Miller, Wabash, Ind.

Pontius; born May 12, 1896, Akron, Fulton County, Ind. Moved to Wabash
County November, 1904. Farmer. Entered service August 30, 1918, Wabash,
Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to 32nd Company, 8th Training
Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. Died of pneumonia October 10, 1918,
Camp Sherman, Ohio. (Burial place not given.)

March, 1915. Machinist. Entered service June 3, 1918, Indianapolis,
Ind. Sent to Camp Hancock, Ga.; assigned to Ordance Corps, U.S.
Headquarters Supply Company. Died of broncho-pneumonia January 18,
1919, at Camp Hancock, Ga. Buried, Lancaster, Wabash County, Ind.

Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army April 27, 1917, Marion, Ind. Sent to Ft.
Thomas, Ky.; assigned to Company I, 16th Infantry, 1st Division.
Overseas June 12, 1917. Died June 2, 1918, at or near Cantigny from
wounds received in action. Body returned, and buried at Wabash, Ind.
First Wabash County boy killed in France. American Legion Post, Wabash,
Ind., named in his honor.
TAYLOR, FREDERICK CLIFFORD

Taylor (Vickory); born January 21, 1890, Garrett, Dekalb County, Ind.
Moved to Wabash County in 1890. Farmer. Entered service in August,
1917, Huntington, Ind. Sent to Ft. Benjamin Harrison; assigned to
Supply Company, 150th Infantry, 42nd (Rainbow) Division. Overseas in
October, 1917. Died of typhoid fever August 8, 1918, in Base Hospital
No. 20, Chatel Guyon, France. Buried in Cemetery near Chatel Guyon,
France, overlooking the valley of Auvergne.

born December 1, 1898, Leesburg, Kosciusko County, Ind. Moved to
LaFontaine, Wabash County, Ind. in 1911. Railroad laborer. Enlisted in
U.S. Regular Army June 24, 1918, Marion, Ind. Sent to Jefferson
Barracks, Mo., transferred to Camp Humphreys, Va.; Camp Forrest, Ga.;
Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga. Assigned to Company D, 214th Engineers. Died of
pneumonia October 18, 1918, Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga. Buried in LO.O.F.
Cemetery, La Fontaine, Ind. The Taylor-Mendenhall Post of the American
Legion, La Fontaine, Ind., named in his honor. (See p. 675)

Military Police. Transferred to Camp John Wise, Tex.; assigned to 40th
Balloon Company in charge of Motorcycle Division. Died of pneumonia
October 18, 1918, Camp John Wise, Tex. Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Ft.
Wayne, Ind.

company. Wounded August 6, 1918, near Chery. Died August 7, 1918, in
Field Hospital. Buried in American Cemetery No. 617, Sec. N, Grave 124,
Fismes, Aisne, France.

to Ft. Williams, Maine; assigned to 72nd Coast Artillery Corps, Battery
B. Overseas August 4, 1918. Died of bronchial-pneumonia March 6, 1919,
Camp Hospital No. 103, Paulliac, Gironde, France. Body returned, and
buried in Falls Cemetery, Wabash, Ind.
