County InformationIt was established in January 15,1851 from Buchanan and Black Hawk Counties,
but not officially organized until October 2, 1854.
It was named for Kentucky native William Orlando Butler, a general and hero of the Mexican-American War,
who ran as Vice President of the United States in 1848.
The county seat is Allison
