Grundy Center Basket Ball Team.
Record for 1910-11

A very successful basket ball season just closed at Grundy Center, March 29, 1911. The new champions have made a record this season that has never before been equaled by any team in Iowa. Of the eighteen games played in this state they won them all and many of the games were won from teams of reputation.

The decisive game for the possession of the Boone Valley League Cup was played at Waterloo, March 28, 1911, between West Waterloo and Grundy Center High Schools. It was a decisive victory for Grundy Center, the score being 48-17.

Read from left to right, top row: Ray Morrison, Superintendent E. L. Ferrier, Carlyle Williamson; lower row: Percy Barker, Robert Hasbrock, Floyd Palmer, John Connell, Lyle Hawn.

This team was sent by the business men of Grundy Center to Evanston, Ill., to compete for honors in the Central States Meet. Although we did not win a championship, we took fourth place and were defeated only by the championship teams and these defeats are easily explained in that the team was forced to play under college rules which the Grundy boys had no knowledge.

This season was a great victory for Grundy in Basket Ball and one long to be remembered by the Basket Ball fans.

Grundy Center Championship Debating Team, 1910.

Left to right: Russell Gray, Alice Sperry, Thomas Halck.

In 1909-10, the Grundy Center High School had a debating team which was not only a credit to the school and city but a credit to the district as well. The question for debate was:

Resolved: That a graduated income tax, with an exemption of incomes below $5,000 per annum, would be a desirable modification of our system of federal taxation.

Grundy Center was represented by three seniors whose names are given above. The contests in this district and their results are also given above. It will be seen then that the Grundy Center High School was engaged in three interscholastic debates in the districts, having won them all, and hence the Northeast champion debating team. Other district champions that year were Missouri Valley in the South-western, Fort Dodge in the North-western, Sigourney in the South-eastern. The semi-finals gave Sigourney the victory over Grundy Center and caused Grundy to lose her chance for the State Championship and to rest with her victories on the honor of being the champion debating team of the North-east District.
