Martin, Donald Dean

Donald Martin Dies at Air Base Hospital

For the second time in less than two years, Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Martin of 1319 Peoria avenue have received word from the government telling of the death of a son.

They learned that their son, S/Sgt. Robert N. Martin, 27, was killed in an auto accident Sept. 23, 1953 while enroute with his wife and child to the airport at Ayr, Scotland to come home on leave from the U.S. Air Force. He had been stationed in England for three years with the Third Air Postal Squadron. Prior to that, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Now, they have learned that another son, A 2/c Donald D. Martin died Saturday, June 11 in a hospital at Travis Air Force Base, Calif. A patient in the hospital for four days, an autopsy showed his death to be due to pneumonia.
He was born in Iowa April 22, 1924, a son of Nathan and Mae Hinson Martin.
Like his brother Robert, he too served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1942 to 1945, enlisting in the U.S. Air Corps in 1945, with whom he had since served.

Prior to his naval enlistment, he was employed at Pabst Brewing Company. He had never married.

Surviving as his parents and the following brothers and sisters, Thomas A., Edward J., Roland Charles and Allan L. Martin, all of Pekin (IL); Mrs. Iola Cooling, Green Valley; Mrs. Sylvia Baer, Peoria (IL); Mrs. Estella Van Dyke, Memphis; Mrs. Lula Belle Paffile, Tacoma, Wash. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.

His body is being sent to Pekin and will be taken to the Preston Funeral home, where time and place of services will be announced. The Rev. Glen Lehman, pastor of the Seventh street Bible church, will officiate. Burial will be in Veterans Memorial cemetery, final resting place of his younger brother.

Contributor's note: Donald was born in Thompson Township, Guthrie County, Iowa. He moved to Pekin, IL. as a toddler. He was also in the U.S. Army, discharged Oct. 14, 1949. His brother Robert is buried in the National Cemetery, Camp Butler, in Springfield, IL.
