Ex-Governor of Iowa Passes Away at His Home in Centerville
Brief Sketch of His Career
Gen. Francis Marion Drake, former governor of Iowa, died at his home in Centerville after a brief illness of diabetes.
Gen. Drake leaves six children and an estate of between $3,000,000 and $4,000,000. His wife died in 1884. He had given much to charitable organizations, and had contributed over $200,000 to Drake university in Des Moines.
As soon as Gen. Drakeís death became known Gov. Cummins issued a proclamation, in which he referred to the generalís service in the war and to his philanthropy, and saying that his death would be deplored and his memory revered.
Francis Marion Drake was born in Rushville, Ill., December 30, 1830.
