Oak Hill Cemetery - Valley Township

Oak hill Cemetery is located just east of Hancock, about one and one-half miles along Highway 59. It was a part of the Whipple farm. William W. Whipple and his wife came to this valley in 1872. They settled on a farm one and one-half miles east of the Nishnabotna River. The town of Hancock was not in existence at that time.

In the year 1882 they sold the farm to James and Ellen Jamison. On the 6th of June 1883 the Jamisons sold a portion to the Valley Township Trustees for a Cemetery as recorded the 14th June 1883. It was surveyed in August of that year. In the year of 1891, Valley Township Trustees comprised of R.M. White, W.H. Bair and A.M. Huff sold the cemetery to the town of Hancock on the 30th of June.

To enlarge the Cemetery two additions have been purchased from Mr. & Mrs. Vernon Karstens in 1952 and 1976.
