The Recording of St. Joseph Cemetery


In the Fall of 2000, Alice Bontz, Darlene Vergamini and Cathy Danielson began recording information from the gravestones in St. Joseph Cemetery with clipboards, pencils and brooms in hand. We kept recording until it got too cold for our hands to hold the pencils. In the Spring of 2001, we continued but added bug spray and ice water to our tool kit. There were even days when an umbrella had to be used to complete our project. The gravestone readings were completed in the Fall of 2001 as the leaves were falling from the trees – some days we had to wait for the cemetery maintenance men to remove the leaves that were covering the tops of the stones.
