Allen County was one of the first thirty-three counties organized by the Territorial Legislature in 1855. It was named for a United States senator from Ohio, William Allen. Iola is the county seat; besides the cities listed at the left, other communities include Bayerd, Carlyle, Cofachique (historical) and Petrolia.
