DIPLOMA ON VACANT CHAIR

Garnett, Kas., Youth Drowns on Eve of Graduation

When the graduation class of the Garnett, Kas., High School received its diplomas, last Monday night, its members stood with bowed heads while one diploma was laid upon a vacant chair--that which would have been occupied by Francis Hawley, 18 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hawley of Sugar Valley.

Young Hawley was drowned Friday while attending a picnic of several of the boys of the class. At the same time the other boys of the party were searching for Hawley's body, his mother was on her way to Garnett, bringing the graduation gift from his parents.

FIRST TRIPLETS BORN IN KANSAS

The Park sisters and their brother, now 21 years of age, were the first triplets born in the state of Kansas, according to the newspapers published at the time of their birth. Mention of them is now made because they have returned to Kansas to live after their family moved outside the state. They were born in Welda and the newspaper made much of the three babies, sending newspaper correspondents to the town to keep tab on their health and growth.
