Named after a Missouri senator, David R. Atchison, this county was one of the original thirty-three created by the first Territorial legislature, in 1855.

Famous flyer Amelia Earhart was born July 24, 1897 in Atchison.

Atchison is the largest population center and the county seat.  Besides the incorporated cities listed, other communities include: Arrington, Cummings, Dalbey, Farmington, Good Intent, Hawthorne, Kennekuk, Larkinburg, Monrovia, Oak Mills, Pardee, Parnell, Port Williams, Potter, St. Pats and Shannon.
