Organized in 1873, Barber County is named after Thomas W. Barber, an anti-slavery supporter who was killed in Lawrence during one of the "Bloody Kansas" battles. Medicine Lodge is the county seat and largest city; besides the cities listed below left, other communities include Aetna, Deerhead, Lake City and Stubbs.
