David Nation Gets A Divorce
Medicine Lodge, Kansas David Nation Gets A Divorce Carrie Confesses to Weakness of Flesh in Longing for Pension Medicine Lodge, Kas., Nov. 27 – Judge Gillett granted David Nation a divorce from his wife, Carrie Nation, on the ground of gross neglect of duty, but exonerated her from the charge of extreme cruelty. In the division of property Mrs. Nation receives the homestead, and Mr. Nation the other town property less valuable, and somewhat incumbered. The personal property and assets were equally divided. Mrs. Nation resisted the divorce but refused to consent to live with her husband. After a volley of pointed questions from Judge Gillett, Mrs. Nation admitted that her purpose in prolonging the union was to be in a position to receive a pension after Nations’ death. She professed throughout the trial to be guided by divine inspiration, although she confessed the desire for pension money was “weakness of the flesh.” The trial consumed twenty-four hours. The adjudication is unsatisfactory to both sides, but it is understood there will be no appeal. The Guthrie Daily Leader; Guthrie, OK; November 27, 1901 Transcribed as Written by D. Donlon |
