Organized by the Territorial Legislature in 1855, Butler County was named for a United States senator from Southern Carolina, Andrew Pickens Butler. El Dorado is the county seat; besides the cities listed at the left, other communities include Beaumont, Bois d'Arc, Brainerd, DeGraff, Gordon, Haverhill, Keighley, Rosalia and Smileyberg.
