Mrs. Edith Adams, mother of an El Doradoan dies

WICHITA - Services for Mrs. Edith Adams, 79, of Wichita who died Thursday, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Broadway Mortuary. Burial will be in Old Mission Cemetery.

Born in Cowley County, Kan., she came here in 1908 from Atlanta, Kan. Her husband, Bert, died in 1958.

Survivors include two sons, Robert L., Wichita, and Herbert Joseph, Downey, Calif., a daughter, Mrs. Lewis R. Bowersox, El Dorado and a brother, Stanley D. Bradshaw, Vero Beach, Fla. (El Dorado Times, Jan. 25, 1969)

ADAMS, HATTIE

Mrs. Adams Had Spent Life in El Dorado Area

Mrs. Hattie Adams who died November 12, at Knutson Manor after a lengthy illness had spent her life in Butler county. She was born April 22, 1889 at Chelsea, a daughter of Albert and Sarah Ellen (Lewellen) Cooley, and was married to Frank D. Adams, April 22, 1909 in El Dorado. For many years the home here was at 114 North Vine street. Mr. Adams died August 16, 1956.

Mrs. Adams was graduated from El Dorado High School and attended Brumback academy. Before her marriage she taught school two-years. She was a member of the First Christian church.

Surviving are two sons, Amos Adams, Viola, Mo., and Russell Adams of Towanda and one brother, Fred Cooley, 904 Orient, El Dorado. There are seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Thomas O. Parish of Wellington officiated at services Monday in the Kirby Funeral Home chapel. Mrs. H. W. Bullerdiek was the organ accompanist for Graydon Waldorf who sang "My God And I" and "In the Garden". The casket bearers nephews of Mrs. Adams were: James Cooley, Lawrence Cooley, Ralph Cooley, Arthur Cooley, T. E. Nace, Jr., and Lyman Nace. Interment was in Belle Vista Cemetery. Paul A. Adkins, 74, of Benton, retired Ross Industries miller, died Tuesday, June 21, 1994. Services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Funeral home.

AHRENS, DONALD W.

Donald W. Ahrens, 65, of Pratt, died Tuesday, April 5, 1994. Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Larrison Mortuary in Pratt with Rev. Ralph Nevius officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Sunset Lawns Cemetery, El Dorado.

He was born Oct. 2, 1928 in Rolla to Oscar W. and Ruby F. Brown Ahrens. On March 17, 1962, he and Doris J. Sipe, formerly of El Dorado, were married in Hutchinson. He was a retired Kansas Department of Transportation area supervisor.

ALCORN, SHIRLEY ANN

Shirley Ann (Harrelson) Alcorn, 58, of Towanda, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 1994, at Knutson Manor. Services are 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hillside Funeral Home in Augusta. Burial will be in the Towanda Cemetery.

She was born Dec. 5, 1935 in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Volnie and Anna Miller. She was married to Eugene Alcorn Sr. She was a retired bindery employee.

Survivors include sons, Robert Harrelson, Wayne Harrelson both of Augusta, step-son Gene Alcorn, of El Dorado, step-daughter, Lena Alcorn of Wichita, two grandchildren. (El Dorado Times, Aug. 15, 1994)

ALEJOS JOSE PAUL

Jose Paul Alejos, 63, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of El Dorado, died Sunday, June 5, 1994, at his home. Rosary will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at Kirby-Morris Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

He was born June 30, 1930, the son of Jose and Virginia (Ruiz) Alejos in Pontiac community near El Dorado where he attended school. He served in the Korean War and was wounded in action in North Korea. After the service he returned to Chicago.

Lydia Pauline Allen, 92, of Wichita, retired math teacher, died Friday, July 1, 1994. Services were held Tuesday afternoon at St. Luke's Methodist Church.

She was born near Burns to Gottfried and Paulina Notz.

Survivors include: sons, Carrol, Glen, Charles all of Wichita, Carlton of Caney, Gene of San Antonio, daughter, LaDean Michael of Wichita, sister, Anna Cobb of El Dorado, 27 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren.

Mary B. Allen, 84, of Wichita, died Monday, Sept. 26, 1994.

She was born Nov. 7, 1909, in El Dorado, the daughter of William Bass and Mary Hughes.

Survivors include: husband Dr. Jay Melvin Allen, sons, Jack of Denver, Colo., Jay of San Jose, Calif., sister, Carolyn Benson of Wichita, two grandchildren.

Services for Roy Allen, 71, of Wichita, a former Missouri Pacific railroad employee who died Friday, were held today in Downing Mortuary Downtown. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens.

Born in Custer, Okla., he was a Wichita resident since 1917.

Lester "Les" Anderson, 66, of Marion, retired co-op manager and city of Marion employee, died Thursday, April 7, 1994. Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at Eastmoor United Methodist Church.

ANDERSON, MARY ADAMS

Mary Adams Anderson, of Independence, Mo., formerly of El Dorado, died Monday, Oct. 10, 1994. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Friday in Mulvane Cemetery.

She was born Aug. 7, 1905, a decendant of John Adams, in Kansas City, Mo., to Nancy Jane (Johnson) and Hugh Hodge Anderson. She graduated from Mulvane High School in 1925 and taught two years in rural schools before attending Wichita University for two years. She taught 14 years in the Mulvane school system and attended summer sessions at the University of Boulder, Colo., Kansas State Teachers College, and Wichita University where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Education degree in 1944.

She also taught at Roswell and Tucumcari, N.M., and in El Dorado, where she taught at Lincoln Elementary for 20 years. She retired in 1967 after teaching a total of 40 years.

Survivors include: sister, Mildred of Aguilar, Colo.; several cousins including Betty Russell of El Dorado. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Bruce.

Mitchell Bradford "Mitch" Anderson, 15, of New Strawn, died Friday, June 10, 1994 from injuries received in an automobile accident. Services are 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Burlington High School auditorium.

Opal L. Anderson, 85,   of Manchester, Okla., former Leon resident, died Monday, Jan. 24, 1994.  Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Driftwood Christian Church.  Burial will be in Byron-Amorita Cemetery.  Rev. Vernie Hovorka and Rev. Chris Cassel will officiate the   services.
 
She was born Dec. 13, 1908, in Kiefer,    Okla., the daughter of Clarence Ruben Hill and Jesse Lee Berryhill.  On Feb. 8, 1929, she and Bryant Anderson were married in Chrokee, Okla.  He died Feb. 20, 1984.  She was a   housewife.
 
Survivors include: sons, Elmo   of Helena, Okla., Raymond of Leon; daughters, Tressie   Folger of Manchester,    Okla., Ethel Martin of Granbury,    Texas.  Twila Tatum of Newton, Mary Joy of Montrose,    Colo., Kay Hall of Atlanta, Kan.; grandchildren she raised,   Patricia Wright, Diane Nixon, both of Leon, Danny Devine of Lewisville,   Texas, Wesley Devine of Berryville, Ark.; sister, Pearl Thomas of Wichita;   brother, Eugene Belter of Byron, Okla.; 25   grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by four brothers,   two daughters and one grandchild.

ANDERSON, WILLIAM H.

Former Butler Countian dies

William H. Anderson, 52, of Menlo Park Calif., a former resident at Rosalia and Towanda, died Tuesday at San Jose, Calif.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kirby Funeral Home chapel. Burial will be in the Blankenship cemetery near Rosalia.

Mr. Anderson had lived in California for the past five years. He was employed by the Lockheed Aircraft company. Prior to moving there, he lived at Towanda and was employed by the Beech Aircraft company at Wichita.

Born at Rosalia on Aug. 9, 1916, he lived there until World War II. Mr. Anderson was married to DeLoma Lambert on Jan. 31, 1941. He was a veteran of World War II.

Mr. Anderson was a member of the Towanda Masonic Lodge, of the Wichita Consistory, and of Towanda Chapter No. 88, Order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are his wife, a son Richard W. Anderson of Oroville, Calif., his mother, Mrs. Ethel W. Anderson of Wichita and two sisters, Mrs. Betty Hilligoss of Wichita and Mrs. Pauline Davis of Oklahoma City, Okla. (El Dorado Times Mar. 12, 1969)

ANDERSON, WILLIAM RAY

Services Held Saturday for W. R. Anderson

Services were held Saturday at the Kirby Funeral Home Chapel for William Ray Anderson of 1420 Cave Springs, who died September 26 in Four Season Nursing Center. The Rev. Thomas J. Bennett, interim pastor of the First Christian Church, officiated. Larry Patton sang "In the Garden," with Mr. H. W. Bullerdiek as organist. The casket bearers were William R. Anderson, John W. Anderson, Frank R. Jackson, Fred L. Jackson, Robert L. Miller, Dennis Piper and Phillip L. Hedrick. Interment was in Sunset Lawns.

A resident of El Dorado since coming here from Sublette in 1936, Mr. Anderson was born August 17, 1886 in Mercer county, Ill., and was married to Catherine Denton, November 7, 1910. Her death occurred December 17, 1960.

Prior to retirement in 1955, he operated a service station for 17 years. For a number of years after coming to Kansas from Missouri in 1918, he engaged in farming in Haskell and Pratt counties. (El Dorado Times, Oct. 3, 1968)

ANDRUS, ROY J.

Death Comes to Roy Andrus

Roy J. Andrus, 65, a retired oil field pumper and resident of the El Dorado area since 1920, died Thursday at Four Seasons Nursing center.

Funeral arrangements will be announced through the Kirby Funeral home.

Mr. Andrus was born at Lahoma, Okla., on Oct. 14, 1904. He moved to Thomas, Okla., about 1907 and to Midian in 1920. He attended schools in Oklahoma and at Midian and attended Kansas State College at Manhattan for one year.

Mr. Andrus worked as a pumper for the Cities Service Oil Company from 1926 until 1966, when he retired. He was married to Mildred C. Sparks in 1928. He later was married to Avis E. Taylor on Feb. 10, 1966. She preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 1967.

Mr. Andrus was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge, of Daugherty Men's Fraternity and of Local 5-241, Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Thomas of El Dorado, Route 4, Mrs. Ramona Michal, 712 South Star, and Mrs. Sandra Navarre of Wichita, a son, Glenn Andrus, with the United States Marine corps at San Diego, Calif., a stepson, Carl Taylor, 1949 Arizona, two sisters, Mrs. Iris Lovern, 1122 Shelden, and Mrs. Maud Cummings of Chickasaw, Ala.; and a brother, Fred Andrus, 701 Towanda.

There are 18 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

A brother also preceded Mr. Andrus in death. (El Dorado Times, Nov. 28, 1969)

William T. Applegate, 60, of Wichita, city of Maize wastewater superintendent, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 1994. Services are pending.

Born at Stillwater, Okla., she came here in 1946, from El Dorado.

Her husband, Virgil died in 1960.

Nona Armstrong, former El Dorado resident, dies

WICHITA - Services were pending Sunday for Mrs. Nona M. Armstrong, 77, of Wichita.

Born in Morgan County, Mo., she came to Wichita from El Dorado in 1923. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Altar Society, Newman Book Club, St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary and Needlework Guild.

Survivors include her widower, Thomas M.; three sons, J. Leon, Rose Hill, T. J., Mulvane, and Jerry of the home, a daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Kruse, Wichita; two brothers, Frank and Ross McDonough, both of Wichita, and a sister Mrs. Josephine Adams, El Dorado.

ARNOLD, ALMOND F.

A. F. Arnold is dead at 71

Almond F. Arnold, 71, of 919 North Main, a retired truck driver, died Monday at the veterans Administration hospital at Wichita.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kirby Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Thomas D. Riddle, pastor of the First Southern Baptist church, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mr. Arnold was a lifelong resident of Butler County. He was born at Augusta on July 1, 1897, and came to El Dorado in 1915. He was married to Kathryn Smith at El Dorado on July 6, 1918. He was a veteran of World War I. Mr. Arnold was a member of the Christian Church at Augusta and of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, and three sisters, Mrs. Jerry Creel of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Rose Gladfelter and Mrs. Thurza Corn, both of Wichita. (El Dorado Times, Mar. 18, 1969)

ARP, JAMES WILBUR

Services will be held in Long Island, N.Y. for James Wilbur Arp, 72, who died at his home in Long Island on March 24, 1994.

He attended school in El Dorado and worked for Skelly Oil Co. He was a veteran of WWI.

Survivors include: daughter, Sharon of New York, son, Jim of Springfield, Mo., sister, Martha Travnichek of El Dorado, several nieces and nephews. (El Dorado Times, March 30, 1994)

ARRASMITH, JACK

El Doradoan 45 Years Dies

Jack Arrasmith, 58, of 312 North Gordy, a resident of El Dorado for about 45 years, died Monday evening at Allen Memorial Hospital after an illness of three years.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial chapel. The Rev. Letha Wood, pastor of the Living Water chapel, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.

Mr. Arrasmith worked in the oil fields after coming to El Dorado from Bethany, Mo. He was born at Bethany on May 6, 1911, and was married to Pearl Furthmyer at Wichita on Dec. 11, 1943.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Robert Ashcraft of Hennessey, Okla., and Mrs. Genelda Pickett of Cheyenne, Wyo., and a brother, Walter H. Arrasmith, living in California. (El Dorado Times, Oct. 22, 1969)

ARTHUR, LAURA A.

Funeral services for Mrs. Laura A. Arthur, 77, a former El Dorado resident who died March 27 at Springfield, Mo., after a short illness, were conducted at the Billings, Mo., Baptist church on Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Arthur lived at Billings.

The Rev. Lloyd Wilson officiated. Burial was in the Springfield National Cemetery.

Mrs. Arthur was born at Worth, Mo., on Aug. 4, 1917. Mr. Arthur was a postal clerk in El Dorado from 1936 until 1942.

Surviving are her husband, two sons, Barrett Arthur of Springfield, Mo., and Earl Arthur of Kansas City, Mo., a sister, Stella Cross of Gilman City, Mo., a brother, the Rev. Cecil Adams of Mumfordville, Ky., and a grandson. (El Dorado Times, Apr. 3, 1969)

AUSTIN, BILL JR.

Death Comes to Bill Austin

Bill Austin, Jr., 46, of 617 West Olive, a resident of El Dorado since 1952, died Sunday night at the Halstead hospital after a long illness.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Kirby Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Donald D. McCracken, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Valley Memorial Park cemetery.

Mr. Austin was employed as a route man by the Bright Laundry. He came to El Dorado in 1952 from Wayne City, Ill., where he was born on Aug. 23, 1923. He was married to Ruby Richards at Fairfield, Ill., on Feb. 9, 1946. Mr. Austin was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the El Dorado Moose Lodge.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Richard Austin, 328 State and Stephen Austin of the home; his father, William Austin of Wayne City, Ill., two sisters, Mrs. Mary J. Bruce of Fairfield, Ill., and Mrs. Edna Butler of Belvedere, Ill., three brothers, Lee Austin of Champaign, Ill., Eldon Austin of Wayne City, and Hobart Austin of Shanahan, Ill. ALLEY, JOHN F.

John Alley Dies at 85

John F. Alley, 85, Douglass, died this morning at Newton Memorial hospital in Winfield.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Augusta Church of Christ. Bill McCormick will officate. Burial will be in the Douglass Cemetery.

Alley was born August 20, 1897, in Eureka Springs, Arka., to James and Rebecca Layne Alley. He was married Sept. 24, 1918 to Blanche Dennett in Wichita. She survives. They are life-long residents of the Douglass/Augusta area. He was a retired farmer and building contractor.

He was a member of the Augusta Church of Christ. He had also served as a deacon and elder for 19 years in the Douglass Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, survivors are a son, Lawrence of Douglass; a daughter, Lola Mae Pierson of Douglass; two sisters, Ethel Paul of Wichita and Lyda Alley of Wichita; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the Augusta Church of Christ building fund.

Blanche Alice Alley Services Monday

Blanche Alice Alley, 91, Douglass, died Friday, Oct 26, at the Augusta Medical Complex Inc.

Funeral services were Monday at Dunsford Funeral Home, Lewis Tandy officiating. Burial was in Douglass Cemetery.

Alley was born July 10, 1899, in Butler County to Molinda and George Dennett.

On Sept. 24, 1918, she married John F. Alley in Wichita. He preceded her in death in 1983.

She belonged to the Church of Christ and was a lifetime resident of Butler County.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence of Douglass; a daughter, Lola Mae Pierson of Douglass; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.

Mrs. Mallisa Allison Dies

Mrs. Mallisa Allison, age 85, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. W. S. Scott, southwest of Augusta early Wednesday morning after a long illness. She is survived by four daughters and three sons; Mrs. W. S. Scott, Augusta; Mrs. R. E. Beckner, Catwosa, Okla.; Mrs. W. D. Fudge, Augusta;; Mrs. Lee Vico, Duerdez, Mo.; James Allison, Island Park, Idaho; J. L. Allison, Boise City, Okla.; S. G. Allison, Kaw City, Okla. Funeral services will be held at the Scott home, southwest of Augusta, Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Dan Smith will be in charge.
