CHARLES JONES A FRIEND IN BUSINESS
Charles E. "Charley" Jones enjoyed success in his legal practice and business, but his proudest professional achievement
was the trust and friendship of his partners.
''He was always very proud of the fact that he and Mr. (Mark) Adams were in business together so many years and
never had a single disagreement they couldn't work out. They trusted each other completely," said his son,
Chuck Jones of Benton. "He was known as kind of an old-time attorney. Everything had to be correct. He was
no ambulance-chaser."
Mr. Jones, 84, died Wednesday.
The son of a Kingfisher, Okla., railroad station agent, Mr. Jones followed his mother to Wichita upon his graduation
from high school and enrolled at Wichita University. Mr. Jones also graduated from the University of Michigan's
law school, but chose to return to Wichita for his practice.
''While he was at Wichita University he met my mother, Nina Kirby Jones," Chuck Jones said. "His mother
still lived here, and her aunt and uncle owned the old Kirby Castle on River Boulevard, where my parents were married
in 1936."
Mr. Jones established a practice with Adams, and the two quickly became known for their legal expertise in the
fields of oil and gas, real estate, manufacturing and broadcasting. The firm grew into Adams, Jones, Robinson and
Mencken, then Adams, Jones, Robinson and Malone.
The partners also branched into the businesses they represented. In 1945, Mr. Jones helped found the Commercial
Savings Association, which is now Columbia Savings, and served for many years on its board. He was also an original
stockholder in KAKE radio, and stayed on board when it acquired a television station.
''He was also very active with the university, and as it grew into Wichita State University he was always very
supportive of its endowment association," Chuck Jones said. "He always kept a low profile about it, though,
because he was not a braggart sort of person."
Services for Mr. Jones will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Downing & Lahey Mortuary.
