Mildred Baker, Fredonia, Dies
Mrs. Mildred Baker, 72, Fredonia, formerly of El Dorado, died Friday at the Fredonia Hospital.
She was born in El Dorado Nov. 9, 1901, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Ow. She married George Baker in El Dorado June 14, 1923. He died in 1963. She was a member of the First Christian church at Fredonia.
Survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Powell and Miss Frankie Ow of El Dorado, and Mrs. Birdene Reeves of Melbourne, Fla.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Knickerbocker-Timmons Funeral Home at Fredonia and burial will be in the Fredonia Cemetery. (El Dorado Times, Aug. 18, 1975)
Millard C. Barnes, 85, of 1222 West Central Avenue, a retired oil field worker and resident of El Dorado 45 years, died late Sunday at Allen Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Dietz-Pittman Colonial Chapel. Burial will be at Walnut Valley Memorial Park cemetery.
Mr. Barnes had been seriously ill since August 1965.
He was born Feb. 1, 1881, in Nemaha County, Kan., and came to the Rosalia area with his parents as a youth. He worked for a time in this area but came to El Dorado from Vici, Okla. He was employed as an oil treater for more than 30 years by the Cities Service Oil Company, retiring in 1951.
Mr. Barnes was married March 25, 1908 at Bloomfield, Okla., to Olive L. Mackey.
Surviving are his widow; three daughters, Mrs. Inez Varner, 1012 West Ash Avenue, Mrs. Pauline Goodwin, 1253 South Summit Street, and Mrs. Laura M. Andrews, El Dorado, Route 2, three sons, Lester M. Barnes, Abington, Va., Junior M. Barnes, Kansas City, Kan., and William E. Barnes, Riverside, Calif. There are 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. A son, Lynn M. Barnes, and a grandson, Max Hitch preceded Mr. Barnes in death. (El Dorado Times, Feb. 7, 1966)
Funeral services for Millard C. Barnes, 85, of 1222 West Central, who died Sunday, were conducted this morning at the Dietz-Pittman Colonial Chapel.
Dr. Joe Riley Burns, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiated. Graydon R. Waldorf sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Mrs. Clarren Butterworth at the organ.
Bearers were Earl Frakes, Max Fryback, T. L. Parrish, Ralph Ryan, and J. L. Sholders. Honorary bearers were Fred Anderson, C. D. Bradbury, C. A. Neighbors, Harry Cousland and P. F. Hartnett.
Burial was in Walnut Valley Memorial Park cemetery. (El Dorado Times, Feb. 9, 1966)
Mrs. Florence Dillenbeck Bathurst, 76, died Saturday at a Wellington Hospital of injuries suffered Friday Morning in the collision of her car with a van near Wellington. Kenneth W. Greer, 50, of Tulsa, Okla., driver of the van, died soon after the crash.
Mrs. Bathurst was a resident of Wichita Falls, Texas. She formerly lived in El Dorado and taught school here.
Survivors are a son, Robert L. Dillenbeck of Overland Park; a daughter, Mrs. N. Dillenbeck Thomas, Wichita Falls, a brother Corwin Durham, Udall, and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mission Chapel Mausoleum, 3424 E. Twenty-First St., Wichita, followed by private entombment. The Rev. Richard Wilke, pastor of the First United Methodist Church at Wichita, a former El Dorado resident, will officiate. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 15, 1975)
Rites were held Tuesday at Mission Chapel mausoleum in Wichita for Mrs. Florence Dillenbeck Bathurst, 76, who died Saturday in a Wellington hospital from injuries sustained in a car accident Friday. Rev. Richard Wilke, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Wichita, officiated at the service.
Mrs. Bathurst, who lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, was a native of Udall and well-known former resident of El Dorado. She was an active member of the First United Presbyterian church here, and a past president of its women's organization. She was a charter member and past president of Chapter DS, P.E.O. and participated in a number of social and study club. She had continued her friendships here through the years since leaving in the late 1940s.
Survivors include a son, Robert L. Dillenbeck of Overland Park, and a daughter, Mrs. Timothy Thomas (Ann Dillenbeck), Wichita Falls, and a brother Corwin Durham, Udall. She had eight grandchildren, two of whom are El Doradoans, Beth and Lee Dillenbeck, 211 North Emporia. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 18, 1975)
Services for William H. Bean, 71, a retired sheet metal worker who died Saturday, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kirby Funeral Home.
Born at Holton, Kan., he came here in 1952. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his widow, Fannie, a son, H. F., Dallas, Tex.; a stepson, Calvin Henderson, Tulsa, a stepdaughter, Mrs. Bud Kerr, Oskaloosa, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Lola Miller, Burlingame, Kan. (Wichita Eagle, Dec. 26, 1967)
Services for Mrs. Dorothy K. Beshirs, 45, killed Monday in a two-car accident seven miles north of Pittsburg, Kan., will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in DeVorss-Gard Mortuary, Wichita. Burial will be in Pleasant valley Cemetery, Bentley.
B. Bonr at Dewitt, Ark., Mrs. Beshirs came to Augusta in 1943.
Survivors include her widower, Edward R., four sons, Wayne, Donald, Keith and Darwin, all at home, two daughters, Mrs. Lola Kay Hicks, and Mrs. Gale Jordan both of Wichita, her mother, Mrs. Katie Elder, Springfield, Mo., and a brother, Gary Elder, Indianapolis, Ind. Former Sheriff Sidney Blakeman Dies here
Sidney Blakeman, Jr., 56, of Leon, former sheriff of Butler county, died Monday at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
During the nine years he served as sheriff, the department was expanded and he was instrumental in planning the present jail which was completed in 1971.
A Republican he was first elected sheriff in 1966 and had served four two-year terms before being defeated at last November's election.
He was a member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association and the Kansas Sheriffs Association of which he was a director and which he served as president in 1972 and was appointed Kansas State director for the National Sheriffs Association in 1973.
He was born Feb. 14, 1919, at Leon, the son of Sidney and Mattie Asmussen Blakeman. He was married to Elouise Squier, Aug. 21, 1937 at Augusta.
He was a member of the Leon United Methodist Church, Joppa Lodge 223, AF&AM, Elk's Lodge, and the Midian Shrine in Wichita.
Before becoming sheriff, Blakeman had served as a Butler County Sheriff's deputy, and an agent for the Kansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.
His father Sidney Blakeman had also served as sheriff of Butler County in the early 1900's.
Survivors are his wife, Elouise of the home, two daughters, Mrs. Myrna Sue Unger, Whitewater, and Mrs. Sydney Kaye Beam, Garden City, a grandson and three grand daughters.
Masonic services will be conducted by Joppa Lodge 223 of Leon this evening at 8 at the Dietz-Carlson Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Leon United Methodist Church with interment in Leon cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home until 10 Wednesday morning.
A memorial has been established for the Scholarship Fund at Butler County Community College of El Dorado, through the Walnut Valley State bank or Dietz-Carlson Funeral Home. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 23, 1975)
Marvin Blankenship, 69, of 51 Rambler Road Hutchinson, died Saturday at Hutchinson Hospital South. He had retired in 1966 as production foreman for Phillips Petroleum. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Madison.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel of the home, two sons, Ted Blankenship, Wichita, and Ray Blankenship, Heppner, Ore., four sisters, Mrs. Grace Brickley, Rosalia, Mrs. Sylvia Seeley, Mrs. Cecil Pendergrass and Mrs. Mary B. Gray all of El Dorado, and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Elliott Chapel at Hutchinson, and graveside services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Blankinship Cemetery in Butler County. (El Dorado Times, Sep. 1, 1975)
Cora Bovard Dies Today
Mrs. Cora Bovard, 91, of 900 Country Club Lane died this morning at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Most of her life was spent in the Halstead Community. She was born at Halstead on Feb. 20, 1884.
She was a housewife and had lived in El Dorado for eight years. In 1903 she was married to O. Frank Moots, who passed away in 1956. In 1974 she married Charles Bovard who survives.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Halstead, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include her husband, Charles, three sons, Glenn Moots, Halstead; Wayne Moots, Akron, Colo., and Frank Moots, Newton; a daughter, Mrs. Fern Johnson, Eureka; 5 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was the last of a family of 10.
Services will be announced by Dietz-Carlson Funeral Home. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 5, 1975)
Thelma M. Byrd, 77, died Sunday, April 25. This resident of the Walnut Valley Manor nursing home had recently been hospitalized at Augusta Medical Complex.
A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, April 27, in the Elmwood Cemetery here. Rev. Vern Bowers , pastor of First United Methodist Church will officate.
She was born July 30, 1915 in Hyrdo, Okla., as a daughter of Frank and Salina Dillon Mauk.
She leaves her husband, Devon Byrd of Augusta, a brother, Russell Mauk of Augusta, a sister, Hazel Brandt, and several nieces and nephews.
