EXHAUST FUMES KILL 2 STUDENTS
AUGUSTA, Kan. --- Two Augusta High School students died Tuesday, apparently from carbon monoxide poisoning, while working on a truck in a closed barn near Gordon, five miles south of Augusta.
A companion has been hospitalized, also with carbon monoxide poisoning, and is in critical condition.
Dead are Marty Bramhall, 17, and Terry M. Moody, 16. The two and Monte Thompson, 17, were found in the cab of a pickup truck about 7:45 a.m. by Moody's mother. Bramhall and Moody were taken to Augusta Medical Complex where they were pronounced dead.
Thompson was reported in critical condition at St. Francis Hospital.
Butler County Undersheriff John Fee said the truck's motor was running inside a closed barn on the Moody's property. Authorities said the youths apparently were spending the night working on the truck and, when the temperature dropped in the early morning hours, got inside and started the engine to warm up.
Autopsies were performed on Moody and Bramhall Tuesday but results of the autopsy were not available Tuesday night.
Services for Moody, a junior, will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the First United Methodist Church, Douglass, Kan.
Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Moody of Gordon, Kan.; a brother, Gary, at home, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Glaze of Gordon and Mrs. and Mrs. Herman C. Moody of Mountain View, Ark. Hillyard-Smith Funeral Home, Douglass, has charge.
