CURRY, MARY – CURRY, WM.

After over thirty years of married life and raising a large family of children the marriage bonds between Mary and Wm. Curry of Bruno township were set aside yesterday, in the district court, and their possessions, the accumulations of years, divided between them. Mrs. Curry, the plaintiff in the case, is to receive one half of the 160 acre farm, one half of their personal property valued at $1500 and $770 or one half of the money they have in the bank. Both Mr. and Mrs. Curry are Irish and they speak with a very pronounced brogue. For her cause of action Mrs. Curry alleged that last June he struck her with his fist, he has struck her at diverse and sundry times; that he bruised and threatened to kill her; that she is past fifty years of age, and feeble and unable to stand such treatment without danger of her health and life. She says her husband has not done manual labor for more than eighteen years past. (Walnut Valley Times, November 27, 1903)

DENNIS, ALICE NEWLIN – DENNIS GEORGE G.

A petition was filed this morning by Alice Dennis, asking a divorce from George G. Dennis. Alice says in her petition that they were married March 31, 1902, and she alleges that, notwithstanding the fact that George is an employee of the Mo. P. railway, he has since last June, failed to provide and care for her as a good husband should. Not only does he refuse to provide for her, but he refuses to live with her, preferring instead to reside with his father, and forcing her to flee to her own parents for food and raiment. MUTZ, CHAS M. DR. – MUTZ, IPHIGEMA

DR. CHAS M. MUTZ FILED SUITE FROM IPHIGEMA MUTZ

Dr. Chas M. Mutz, of Douglass, has filed suit for divorce from Iphigema Mutz. In his petition he states that they were married on June 26, 1888, at Nortonville. It seems that the doctor has had a rather stormy time of things to judge from his story of subsequent events. He says that at several times she slapped him around and had a disagreeable, irascible and jealous temper and disposition; caused him to lose medical practice by insulting and abusing his lady patients; accused him of immoral; made him get his own meals for weeks at a time in order to preserve peace; and has become addicted to the use of narcotic drugs. The doctor wants to quit. (Walnut Valley Times, June 5, 1903)

PURCELL, CEYNETH T. – PURCELL, THOMAS R.

The divorce suit of Ceyneth T. Purcell against Thomas R. Purcell for divorce has been occupying the attention of the district court. There were quite a number of people from southern Butler interested in the case as witnesses who were in attendance at the hearing. The Purcells have long been residents of the county and Mr. Purcell has been quite prominent in southern Butler politics. He was married before and had three daughters by his first wife. Since his last marriage three sons have been born and they are with their mother in the family row.

During the trial this afternoon while Purcell was on the stand he made a remark that “three jacks and a queen high are hard to beat.” -- and the fellows at the court house are trying to find out whether the attorneys or sons are his knaves. There has evidently been much incompatibility and considerable hell in the Purcell home, and at times it is said to have developed the foot racing speed of several members of the family in order to keep from getting hurt.

The court granted the divorce and gave Mrs. Purcell $3,800 alimony. (Walnut Valley Times, November 27, 1903)
