DENNETT, THEODORE

Dennett’s Body Was In Walnut River 56 Hours

Body of Drowned Man Was Recovered Yesterday Afternoon at 3 O’clock

Used Grappling Hooks

The empire Secured Man From Wichita Who Recovered Body With Hooks.

After being in the swollen Walnut River a few miles southeast of Augusta for 56 hours, the body of George Dennett, aged 76, employed by Empire Gas & Fuel Co., was recovered by a Wichita Fireman – C. W. Brown.

Mr. Dennett, together with a horse he was leading, was swept into the turbulent Walnut current at 7:30 o’clock Tuesday morning. The water at the time was rushing over the bridge with a rapidity not calculated by the aged man.

Fireman Brown came to Augusta Wednesday, being brought here by the Empire. He brought with him, grappling hooks and other paraphernalia employed in rescuing the drowning, or recovering bodies of the drowned. He started work during the afternoon. At 4 o’clock he located the body in a drift, which he destroyed with dynamite. However, the form was lost, and it was not until nearly a day later that he finally hooked it, 500 feet from the drift and a half mile south of the bridge in 14 feet of water. Mr. Brown had worked continuously with but a few hour rest in the early morning Thursday, for more than 24 hours.

Mr. Dennett had been married twice and 16 children were born to the two unions. Fourteen still survive. The drowned man moved to the Augusta oil fields about four years ago from Wichita, where he had lived seven or eight years.

The funeral was held this afternoon from the home. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
