BUTLER COUNTY'S EIGHTY YEARS BIOS

MR. AND MRS. JOHN W. GUTHRIE

(Transcribed by Peggy Luce)

Two of the finest and best-beloved pioneer residents of Butler County were Mr. and Mrs. John W. Guthrie, natives of Perryville, Kentucky, who were married in 1869 and came to Butler County in 1870. The Guthries were members of prominent families who lived on adjoining plantations in Kentucky.

Mr. Guthrie was born July 16, 1848, and died in 1921, in Augusta. Mrs. Guthrie who was Nancy Jane Hope before her marriage, was born April 9, 1846, and died in Augusta, January 24, 1935. When Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie came to Butler County they bought 160 acres of land on the Little Walnut River in Bloomington, Township and Mr. Guthrie also filed on a quarter section in that locality. In 1903 they moved to Augusta. Their friends were legion. Mr. Guthrie was a director of the First National Bank of Augusta and for forty-six years was identified with the progress of the county.

This page is dedicated to the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie by J. B. Bourgett, who married Mayme Lee Guthrie, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie, on October 14, 1896. Mrs. Bourgett died in 1906.

This picture of Mr. and Mrs. Guthrie appeared in the Augusta Gazette with a story of a surprise party, a turkey dinner, given in their honor by Mr. Bourgett on Mr. Guthrie’s seventieth birthday anniversary, July 16, 1918. The engraving is made from the newspaper picture. Those invited to the birthday dinner included:
