BUTLER COUNTY'S EIGHTY YEARS BIOS

MRS. C. A. LELAND

(Transcribedy by Lori DeWinkler)

“God has placed the genius of women in their hearts,” said Lamartine, “because the works of this genius are always the works of love.”

Nothing more fully typifies the beautiful life of Mrs. C. A. Leland, which came to a close this week, than this utterance. For she manifested the genius of love in manifold ways. She was strong in mind and radiant in spirit. Her activities and interests covered a wide range. She lived neither in the fading past nor in the tempting future. The present was sufficient to her—and she and her family, under her inspiration, knew well how to live and gain the fullest from each passing day. She animated those about her with zeal for the beauties and charms of existence, and family, friends and acquaintances—all—came under the spell of her beneficent spirit.

Her home was first and she reared children who possess rare character and usefulness. But her devotion did not stop at her own gate. She was one of the founders of the El Dorado Library and helped to fight the primary battles that resulted in the excellence of the institution this town has today. She was a force in a few well-selected clubs; she was faithful to church obligations; she was a charming companion and friend. A good book, an inspiring picture, a choice bit of handwork, her garden flowering under the May sun—these were her joys. Her positive graces were all on the side of gentility and culture—and she made no show of them. These exemplified themselves in countless manners, and helped to stimulate and cheer hundreds who knew her during her extremely long residence of fifty-seven years in this community.

Thus she lived and loved and went a gentle way. Thus she seeded her soul in the place that was home. Thus she created and sustained a choice pattern in the fabric that is El Dorado, one that will never fade, and which comprise a contribution to the character of this town that has no counterpart.—January 23, 1935.
