BUTLER COUNTY'S EIGHTY YEARS BIOS

GEORGE W. TOLLE

(Transcribed by Lori DeWinkler)

With profoundest regret El Dorado and Butler County bade a farewell yesterday to one of their staunchest friends and loyal citizens—George W. Tolle. For more than a half century—since he rode into this frontier community on a stage coach—Mr. Tolle had been a familiar figure. There was nothing of the sensational in his career; rarely is there anything of brilliancy or the meteor’s flash in the work of a builder. And George Tolle was a builder. As a member of a community that was winning its way against the wilderness, he helped—in humble fashion at first—to erect its foundation and then the structure. Some day an epic will be written of the lives of these builders, setting forth in vivid and truthful outline their daily efforts that added bricks to the growing structures. Until that time, the credit that Mr. Tolle and many others like him receives must come from the enduring work of their hands. Probably no better tribute can be rendered than that. Mr. Tolle held public office, and was a faithful and hard-working citizen of this community who reared a family of splendid boys and girls to carry out the labors he has begun. His life was rich and well-rounded. It was full of the achievements that count. And so the name of Tolle will always be honored in this town and county for the sterling integrity and quiet effectiveness of the good neighbor and friend whose journey is now ended, but whose influence for good will go one and on.—January 30, 1923.
