AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

American Legion Auxiliary of Edgar Dale Post No. 81, organized May 25, 1921, with a charter membership of ten, now has 113 members.

The Auxiliary’s history from the beginning has been one of service. Loyally it has adhered to its “Affirmation of Purpose.” It conducts an annual sale of poppies for welfare work, has established a uniform method of decorating veterans graves, sends annual gifts to veterans in hospitals, and joins in all welfare work.

Mrs. M. D. Kistler was first president of the auxiliary, with Mrs. Harry Wilson, vice president. Since Mrs. Kistler, the following have had charge of the auxiliary’s destines: Alma Wilson, Anne Small, Susie Lamb Perry, Anna Gill Flora Stewart, Verne Pollard, Glen Daniels, Elva Loman, Verna Hammer, Eunice Hambleton, Mary Ellen Shearburn, Florence Peterschmidt and Lenore Wharton.

CHILDREN OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

William Rittenhouse Soceity, Children of the American Revolution, was organized on March 14, 1928 by Mrs. Frank H. Cron, organizing president.

The society meets regularly for programs of historical trend with an annual special program, such as a play having a Revolutionary theme. El Dorado Chapter has fifty-one members. Following Mrs. Cron as president was Mrs. R. C. Woodward, who was succeeded by Mrs. Harry Harris. Mrs. Woodward is state director of the society. Senior and junior group members who have served as presidents are: Robert Thompson, Adaline Byrd, Mary Lou Sandifer, Caroline Ewing and Mercedes Stratford of the senior group; Betty Joe Childs, Phyllis Robison, Marjorie Ann McKay and Doris Turner of the junior group.

DAUGHTERS OF UNION VETERANS

Mary Vance Tent Number 15, Daughters of the Union Veterans 1861-1865, was organized in El Dorado, December 9, 1930 by Mrs. Frank H. Cron.

The object of this national organization is to perpetuate the memories of the Union Veterans by protection of historic spots, preservation of documents and relics of the Civil War and by promotion and celebration of all patriotic anniversaries.

El Dorado unit of the D. U. V. is named for Miss Mary Vance, a Pennsylvanian, who, before the war, taught among the Indians of Kansas and Nebraska. Entering hospital service, she labored through the whole term of the conflict with but three weeks’ furlough.

Miss Marian Chastain was first president of Mary Vance Tent, with Miss Inez Munson and Mrs. Cron, as successors. Mrs. Hazel McGinnis Hall is present head of the organization, which has a membership of thirty-five.

JUNIOR AUXILIARY

Junior Auxiliary is a branch of the Senior Auxiliary of the American Legion.  Comprising thirthy-eighty girls, it was organized in February of 1931 and follows the rules of the older state organization with special emphasis on rehabilitation work.

Mrs. J. E. McHarg has had charge of the group since its organization.  Mary Elizabeth Pardee, Irene Peterschmidt and Maxine Morain were elected presidents in the order named.

SONS OF UNION VETERANS

Marion Perry Camp Number 93, Sons of Union Veterans, was organized April 21, 1933 during the State G. A. R. Encampment held in El Dorado and in 1934 had a membership of thirty-five.

The camp was named for Marion Perry, an El Dorado Civil War veteran, the 93 indicated his age at the time of organization. Its members, who must be direct descendants, sons, grandsons, or great grandsons of Union veterans, pledged themselves to carry out the precepts of the G. A. R. Boyd H. Marston is camp commander and Roy K. Bear is junior vice commander of the state department.

SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION

A Squadron of Sons of the American Legion was organized in El Dorado, April 3, 1934 with a charter roll of 103 members. Formal presentation of the charter was made by Frank T. Sullivan, department commander. Captain Edgar Dale Post conducted the ceremonies. The age limit for members is from birth to twenty-two years. Jack Morris is captain of the squadron.
