Elmwood Mausoluem

MAUSOLEUM IS BEING PLANNED FOR COMMUNITY
Formal Contract Made Between City of Augusta and Latchaw Brothers
To Be Placed in Elmwood
Plans Tentatively Suggested Call for Building Containing 100 Crypts - One-Third of Space Sold Already
Following the signing of a formal contract last night by Mayor George M. Smith, in behalf of the city, and Dr. John R. H. Latchaw, representing Latchaw Bros., and barring wars, strikes or other contingencies, it is confidently anticipated that 'ere the dawning of Memorial Day next year there will have been installed in Elmwood Cemetery a modern community mausoleum that will represent the very last word in artistic architectural construction.
The contract above referred to provides that in consideration of the sum of $1, the city conveys to Latchaw Bros. a plot of ground in Elmwood approximately 100x150 feet in dimensions, on which will be erected the community mausoleum now being promoted by the Messers. Latchaw. Following the completion of the structure, the title will then revert to the city, it only being vested in this building concern until such time as purchasers of crypts within the mausoleum have met their obligations to Latchaw Bros.
One-Third Space Sold
That the project is assured of being carried to a successful completion between now and May 30, 1921 is attested by the fact that within the past few days practically one-third of the space in a 100-crypt mausoleum has already been bargained for by seven residents of Augusta. Such gratifying encouragement has thus been given the promoters of the enterprise that an edifice of at least this magnitude and possibly even larger seems definitely assured.
Individual crypts are being offered for $300 each but where something like a family tomb is arranged for the price naturally varies with the size required. One of these adjuncts is already spoken for and another will probably be arranged for by some other family within the next few days, there being only a limited number available so as not to interfere with the symmetry of the interior of the edifice.
As suggested by Dr. Latchaw last night, the building proper, figuring on the basis of 100 crypts, will cover a ground space about 40x52 feet in dimensions. The crypts are apportioned fifty to each side and five tiers high, leaving ample space for a roomy interior through the center. The triple walls are to be 22 inches in thickness. Probably Bedford or Carthage stone will be used for the exterior panel walls and a light veined marble for the interior. The ceiling is to be plastered.
Artistic Creation
There is to be a concrete roof and the reinforced concrete floor to be covered with ceramic mosaic or marble design. Art glass windows and doors and decorative designs in oil or water colors for the interior walls and ceiling will combine to make the whole an artistic creation of infinite beauty- admirably in keeping with the most advanced ideas concerning mausoleum construction.
The firm, comprising of Dr. Latchaw and his brother, C. F. Latchaw, has been in active operation for the past fifteen years, specializing in such type of construction in Ohio and Michigan, their headquarters being at Findlay, O. Just at present they are negotiating for the erection of a similar mausoleum at Wichita and their program as now outlined would call for the building of the one there and the Augusta structure during the same interval. Incidentally, it is said that they have really received more encouragement in Augusta than in Wichita and indications now point to a more imposing design for this city than for the Sedgwick county metropolis. (Augusta Gazette, Tuesday, January 20, 1920, front page & page 3)
THAT MAUSOLEUM
The mausoleum that they plan, will put Augusta in the van of Kansas cities far and near; in other words, a pioneer, in modern movements of the age; a climax to the growing stage, that long has marked this city fair that has 'em all beat everywhere. A massive structure built of stone and edifice that will add tone, proclaiming in the years to come, that simply crude petroleum has not usurped our every thought as life's stiff battle we have fought. A hallowed, sacred resting place, that even Time can ne'er efface. A. J. S. (Augusta Gazette, Tuesday, January 20, 1920, page 1)
MAUSOLEUM COMPLETED BY SEPT 1
According to C. F. Latchaw, of Latchaw Bros., the
firm which is building the mausoleum at Elmwood Cemetery, the construction of the building is going foward rapidly
and they expect to open between August 15 and September 1.
