POTWIN WILL REMEMBER ARNOLD CLAASSEN AS HUMAN ENCYCLOPEDIA
Arnold Claassen may be remembered as the Patriarch of Potwin. He had a deep interest in local history, and his memory
was unparalleled.
Mr. Claassen, who died Wednesday evening of a heart attack in his rural Whitewater home, was a human encyclopedia
of Potwin. He cataloged important dates, numbers and events most of his life. Local students sometimes sought him
out for information for school projects. He had kept logs of precipitation, temperature and such since 1948.
"At any time that he was called on for help, he was more than willing to be right there and help you,"
said Joyce Allen, a member of the Potwin City Council. "He was just very knowledgeable, personable and kind
to all he came in contact with."
Mr. Claassen knew Potwin like no one else did and would entertain people with stories and photos of early Potwin.
He also was interested in local education, banking and politics.
''If an issue came up in the community that he thought someone needed to take a stand on he'd write politicians,"
said his nephew Olin Claassen.
A third generation farmer, Mr. Claassen and his two brothers, Walter and Herbert, produced and sold seed across
the country from the Whitewater-Potwin area.
''They shipped seeds to carnation farms in Washington and Hershey farms in Pennsylvania," Ralph Claassen said.
"He kept a copy of all his correspondence. I think he also sold seeds to Adolph Rupp," the legendary
University of Kentucky basketball coach.
In 1952, when he was 49, a tractor accident resulted in the amputation of Mr. Claassen's right leg above the knee.
He was later fitted for a wooden leg but remained physically active.
''He still climbed silos and haymows," Ralph Claassen said.
Last summer, his two sons farmed the land but he was always involved.
When he wasn't working on the farm, he was telling stories about old Potwin.
''He could go back and name when something had happened 30, 40, 50 even 70 years ago," Ralph Claassen said.
"I wasn't always sure that he was right, but he usually gave concrete answers."
Other survivors include his widow, Ida; son, Glenn of rural Potwin; daughter, Gwendolyn Claassen of Owasso, Okla.;
brother, Ernest G. of Whitewater; sisters, Esther Wiebe, Elsie Claassen, Hilda Entz, Edna Regier, all of Whitewater;
and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in Emmaus Mennonite Church. A memorial has been established with the Back
to the Bible Radio Ministry, Lincoln, Neb. Lamb-Nutter Mortuary has charge.
