Reuben Cox of Rose Hill Committed Suicide Saturday
Reuben Cox, aged 67, a pioneer of Richland township and a community leader for a number of years in the southwest part of Butler county, committed suicide by shooting himself in the heart Saturday afternoon at his home a mile east and a half mile north of Rose Hill. It is believed the act occurred about noon, but Mr. Cox's body was not found until five hours later.
No reason is given by relatives for the death. It is said, however, that Mr. Cox had been in poor health for a number of months and lately had been despondent. It was first reported that a note had been left by Mr. Cox, but it was declared at Rose Hill to be incorrect.
Mr. Cox took his life with a shotgun. The weapon was placed on a table. A string was then attached to the trigger and wrapped about a table leg. Mr. Cox seated himself in front of the gun and pulled the string. He evidently was only a few inches from the gun, as the full force of the load took effect in his body. It is believed that death was instantaneous.
The death was not discovered until Mrs. Cox returned home late Saturday afternoon after a visit at the home of her son, Virgil, at Rose Hill. She went to the place in the morning, leaving Mr. Cox at home alone.
In addition to his widow, Mr. Cox is survived by six children and many other relatives. The children are Elven, Virgil, Pheron, Chester, Mrs. Charles Sesmire and Mrs. Charles Orell. Pheron and Mrs. Orell reside at Peck, while the others live in the Rose Hill neighborhood.
Mr. Cox was a leader in the Friends church at Rose Hill and always took an important part in its affairs. He was one of the founders of the Quaker community at Rose HIll.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock yesterday
at the Friends churh and burial was made in the Friends cemetery nearby.
