GECKLES, OLIVE JOAN (SCHERER)

Olive Joan (Scherer) Geckles, 75, of El Dorado, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, in Wichita. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13 at St. John's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Lawns Cemetery. Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Johns Catholic Church.

She was born July 14, 1925 in Cherokee, Okla. In November 1951, she was married to Joe Geckles in Alexander. In 1968, they moved to El Dorado with their four children. In addition to being a wonderful mother and grandmother, she retired from T. G. & Y. in El Dorado after 20 years of employment. She was a long time parishioner of St. John's Catholic Church in El Dorado until her health necessitated a move into Villa Maria Nursing Home in Mulvane. She was a member of the Legion of Mary and Altar Society.

Survivors include: sons, Bill and wife Patti Geckles of Olathe, John Geckles of Wichita and Jim Geckles of Dallas, a brother, Jerry Scherer; sisters, Shriley Sackett, Patty Hardison and Jeanette Hale, all of Wichita, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Linda Jean Davis; and a grandson, Clinton Geckles.

GEIL, MERLE ADA NAIRN

Merle Ada Nairn Geil, 97, of Edmond, Okla., and former resident of El Dorado, died Sunday, June 11, 2000, at Oklahoma Christian Home in Edmond. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at Bryant-Christians Chapel in Great Bend. Burial will follow in the Great Bend Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

She was born Aug. 17, 1902, in Barton County, the daughter of Perry Columbus and Maggie May Hall Nairn. She graduated from Pawnee Rock schools and business school in Los Angeles, Calif. Upon her return to Pawnee Rock she worked for the Western Telephone Company. On Aug. 21, 1928, she and Earl Geil were married in a ceremony held on top of Pawnee Rock.

She was a cook at Shady Grove Grade School and farmed with her husband west of Great Bend until his death in 1964. In 1988 she moved to Alexandria, Va., then moved to Oklahoma City. She had resided at Oklahoma Christian Home in Edmond for four years.

She was a member of the Liberty EHU, charter member of the 20th Century Club of Pawnee Rock, 4-H extension council and Pawnee Rock and Great Bend Christian churches.

Survivors include: four sons, Donald D. and wife Angie of Oklahoma City; Glenn M. and wife Judie of Edenburg, Texas; Gene W. and wife Mary of Silver Springs, MD., and Larry L and wife Joanne of New Cambria; daughter, Joan Hicks of Alexandria, Va.; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are to the Oklahoma Christian Home Operations, Edmond, Okla.

GOFF, ELSIE W.

Elsie W. Goff, 83, of 8200 E. Pawnee in Wichita, retired teacher and stepmother of Marjorie Beal of El Dorado and Betty Young of Augusta, died Tuesday. Services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Byrd-Snodgrass Colonial Chapel.

Other survivors include brothers, Orville Wilson of Oakview, Calif., and M. J. Wilson of Ojal, Calif., and sister, Bertha Weber of Wichita. (El Dorado Times, Sept. 26, 1985)

GORDON, LUCILLE I. (ELLIS)

Lucille I. (Ellis) Gordon, 83, of Leon, died Thursday, March 1. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 6, at Leon Methodist Church.

She was a retired dental hygienist.

Survivors include: a son, Patrick Gordon of Pratt; daughters, Marijo Bland of Derby and Vicki Gordon of Wichita; a sister, Dorcas Halverson of Hardin, Mont.; eight grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Craig Gordon and her parents, Harry C. and Jo B. Ellis.

GORE, ALVIN K.

Alvin K. Gore, 66, of Plainville, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000 at his home following a long illness. Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at the Plainville Christian Church with Rev. Troy Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in the Plainville Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Friday and from 9;30 a.m. - service time Saturday in the church.

He was born Sept. 2, 1933, in Sawyer, the son of Leslie and Susie L. Douthart Gore. He worked for the White & Ellis Drilling Company in El Dorado, the for Schult Mobile Homes in Plainville. He also worked for Slawson Drilling Company in Great Bend and then was the owner operator of Gore Trucking leasing to Morgan Drive Away, transporting mobile homes. On Jan. 16, 1953, he married Joyce Young in El Dorado. He was a gardener and enjoyed his yard and loved to work.

Survivors include wife, of the home; daughter, Gayla Puthoff of Wichita, sons, Steve Gore of Hershey, Pa., and Monte Gore, of Plainville; brothers, Robert E. Gore of Hutchinson, David Gore of Wichita, Jimmy Gore of Nickerson and Roger Gore of Phillipsburg; sister, Sue Bullock of Texas and 13 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana L. Mock; a brother, Jerry Gore, and his parents.

GREELEY, HERBERT JACKSON

Herbert Jackson Greeley, 95, of Winfield, died Monday, Dec. 18, at Winfield Resthaven. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery.

He was born July 27, 1905 to Herbert J. and Lucinda (Bailey) Greeley in El Dorado. On Oct. 9, 1925, he was married to Amy A. Smiley in Wichita.

He was educated in El Dorado and attended Kansas State University, where he received training in land surveying. He was a civil engineer and worked for Sedgwick, Cowley and Butler Counties. He retired in 1970. He was a member of the First Christian Church and Mason Lodge.

Survivors include: a son, John Greeley of Wichita, daughters, Margaret Hollabaugh of Los Alamos, N.M., and Nina Kershner of Mims, Fla., eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20 at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, which has the arrangements. Memorial smay be made to the Winfield Food Bank. (El Dorado Times, Dec. 19, 2000)

GUY, RICHARD M.

Richard M. Guy, 99, Leon, died on Monday, Jan. 29, 2007.

Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Leon Christian Church. Interment will follow in the Leon Cemetery.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1907, in Denver, Colo., the son of Melvin Morris and Alice (Grim) Guy. He came to Leon as a child and lived in Rose Hill for 21 years. Mr. Guy farmed and worked for Beech Aircraft for over 20 years. He was a crew chief and union steward at the time of his retirement from Beech. His passion was woodworking and owned Guy's Woodworking Shop from 1967 to 1987, where he made clocks for many years. He was very proud that he had clocks in all 50 states and 17 foreign countries.

He was a member of the Leon Christian Church where he was a deacon and elder. He was also a former member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.

On Aug. 30, 1933, he married Fern Peterson at Latham. She preceded him in death on July 20, 2000.

His survivors include: sons, Donald (Devona) Guy of Kennesaw, GA. and Gerald (Marcia) Guy of El Dorado; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 17 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers.
