HANSEN, CHILDREN

TWO CHILDREN DEAD

Boy and Girl at Pontiac Drank Too Much Whiskey - Parents Did Not Realize Their Conditions - Sad Home of John Hansen.

Pontiac, Kas., Jan. 16 - Two young children of John Hansen died today from drinking too much whiskey. The mother had been using some the

day before as a toddy and placed the bottle on a table where the little boy 5-1/2 years old found it. He and his sister about 4 years of age drank

about one and a half pints and were found about 8 a.m. by the parents in a stupor.

No realization of the children's danger came to Mr. and Mrs. Hansen. They thought the children would sleep off the effects as older people do.

About 11, both vomited some but the poison had done its fatal work. Dr. W. O. Bennett was

finally summoned reaching the stricken home about 4 p.m. He found the children in a dying condition and both died soon after his arrival. The boy's

name was Thomas, the girl's Hattie. The funeral occurs tomorrow. The blow to the parents is terrible. Dr. Bennett remained with Mrs. Hansen all

last night, so great was her distraction.

Mr. and Mrs. Hansen reside on the Colgan farm, are about 40 years of age and are considered excellent people. (Walnut Valley Times, Jan. 22,

1904, Vol. XXXV, No. 1, transcribed by Peg Luce)
