Death of Mrs. M.E. Hartenbower
All Douglass joins in mourning over the death of Mrs. Mary E. Hartenbower, who passed away, Wednesday afternoon, May 20, about five o'clock, at her home, after a short, severe illness, having almost reached the age of 79 years.
For more than 40 years the home and the family over which she was the motherly head, have been important features in the life of Douglass. For more than a half century she and her family had been well known and much respected throughout the entire community.
Owing to age and an accident, her health had not been good for a year or so, but serious complications set in a few days before her death and grew worse until death resulted.
Mary Elizabeth Allen was born at Hennepin, Illinois, May 29, 1844. There she was married to her late husband, Andrew Hartenbower. With their family they came to Kansas in 1872, securing excellent Walnut Valley land four miles north of Douglass, which is still possessed. Something over forty years ago they built a nice residence in Douglass, which since that time has been the family home, noted for its genial hospitality.
She reared four sons and six daughters, all of whom survive her except her eldest son, Allen, who died a few years ago. The surviving children are Mrs. J.F. Anderson, of El Dorado; Mrs. F.J. Best, of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Luman LaPorte, of Newkirk; Miss Anna Hartenbower, Mrs. Byrd Stinson, Mrs. Edythe Ward, at home; John and W.A., also at home and Jerry, at Ellinwood, Kansas. The children and their families frequently gathered together around their mother, to whom they were all much devoted. Those abroad came as hastily as they could on learning of her serious illness, and are all here now. Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters, nieces and nephews are here or are coming for the sad occasion.
The funeral will be at 10 o'clock, Saturday morning, the 23rd. (Douglass Tribune, Friday, May 22, 1925 Submitted by Diana Herrman)
