
HAMILTON, JEANNETTE AUSTIN KING
Jeannette Austin King Hamilton, 95, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2007 at Halstead Place Assisted Living in Halstead.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home in El Dorado.
Jeannette was the only child of Clyde Burrough King and Bessie Fern Austin and she was born Dec. 11, 1911 on a farm one and one half miles south of El Dorado close to now Highway 77. The Kings moved to El Dorado when Jeannette was in the third grade, and she graduated from El Dorado High School in 1929. She then attended Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and she graduated from Kansas University in 1934. She briefly worked as a social worker with the Cowley County Welfare Department. On Oct. 31, 1937 she was united in marriage to Robert Franks Hamilton in Arkansas City. The lived in Western Kansas until 1939 when the moved to El Dorado. Mr. Hamilton became the director of the Butler County Welfare Department in 1939 and remained in that position until his retirement in 1974. Jeannette lived with her family at 329 N. High in El Dorado for 52 years.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church., the W.M.B Club, D.A.R. and an Alzheimers Support Group. She loved to play bridge and watch K.U. Basketball.
Surviving family include one son, Austin F. Hamilton and his wife Linda, Halstead; grandchildren, A. Wade Hamilton and wife Sabrina of Las Vegas, Nevada, Louis C. Hamilton and wife Angelique of Las Vegas, Jeffrey F. Hamilton and wife Rachel of Los Angeles, Jennie A. Hamilton of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Robert Hamilton of Denver, Colo., Christopher B. Hamilton and wife Julie of Becida, Minn.; and great-grandchildren Lucas, Annette, David, Jane, Hannah and Nolan.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert of 63 years in 2000 and one son, Robert King Hamilton in 2002

Arthur F. Honn dies in Newton
Arthur F. Honn, 88, 630 Benton, died Wednesday at Axtell hospital in Newton. He had been ill the past two weeks.
Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Dietz Colonial chapel. Interment will be at Sunset Lawns cemetery.
Born at Vincennes, Indiana, he came to Kansas as a youth and settled at Marion. From there he moved to Midian and in 1920, moved into El Dorado. He worked as a rig builder in the oil fields from which he retired in 1946.
He was first married to Elma Olive Gilliland, Dec. 26, 1906, at Superior, Neb. She died Aug. 5, 1958. Later (Sept. 4, 1961) he married Dora Cooley, in El Dorado.
He was a member of the First United Methodist church and also held membership in the Golden Age club.
Survivors include his wife, Dora, of the home; two sons, Harold A. Honn, 1121 West Second, and Carroll C. Honn, 1210 North Topeka; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Marjorie) Reichert, 1365 Country Club Road, and Mrs. George (Maxine) Blackburn, 121 South High; one step-daughter, Mrs. Lyman (Georgia) Nace, Towanda; one brother, Calvin Honn, Peabody; one sister, Mrs. Flo Moorhead, of San Jose, California; 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Mary A. Hoss, 91, of Potwin, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2007
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Potwin United Methodist Church. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Carlson Funeral Home, El Dorado. Interment will follow the funeral service in McGill Cemetery in Potwin.
She was born Jan. 6, 1916 at Sun City in Barber County, the daughter of Arthur and Flora (Kaminska) Humeston. She was a busy homemaker living on the farm. She had spent the last year in Lenexa, living with her daughter. She was an active member of the Potwin United Methodist Church, always doing whatever needed to be done.
In her early years, she was a member of the Farm Bureau.
In March 1941, she and Floyd J. Hoss were united in marriage in Potwin. He preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1987.
Mary was a loving and kind friend, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all.
Survivors include: three sons, Paul Hoss of Pampa, Texas, Keith Hoss and wife Mary Lou of Floyda Knobs, Ind., and Neal Hoss and wife Susan of Layton, Utah; a daughter and her husband, Fern and Gary Aron of Lenexa; one sister, Lucille McKnight of Lubbock, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her parents and an older sister, Edna.

El Dorado Youth Dies in Crash
Jackie D. Hughes, 19, Was Returning Home For Christmas Vacation
Jackie Duane Hughes, 19, died about 10 o'clock last night when the car he was driving crashed into a ravine in a Greenwood county pasture just inside the Greenwood-Butler county line. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Hughes, 722 West First.
A student at Central Technical Institute, Kansas City, Mo., he was enroute home for the holidays.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Byrd Funeral home with Dr. O. Ray Cook, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Lawns cemetery.
State Trooper John Fee, who investigated the accident with Trooper Dick Hadsall and Butler County Sheriff Glenn Tarrant, said Hughes' car crashed through a fence and traveled for 50 yards in the pasture before ramming head-on into the bank of the ravine after leaving Highway US-54. There was no skid marks on the road. The hood of the car was found 50 feet from the point where the vehicle came to a stop, Fee said.
No External Injuries
It was believed the young man died either of a broken neck or a fractured skull. There were no external injuries.
Officers here were notified of the accident by a passing motorist, L.H. Leach of Pierre, S.D. A state trooper stationed at Eureka and the Greenwood county sherriff were also called to the scene of the crash.
Young Hughes was born here on Jan. 23, 1935, and spent all of his life in El Dorado. He attended the public schools here and the First Methodist church.

FORMER LEON MAN DIES IN MISSOURI
Russell Hansen, 66, Anderson, Mo., a former resident of the Leon community, died at Anderson Saturday.
He was born March 31, 1883, in Cleveland, Kans., and later moved to the vicinity of Leon. He had lived at Anderson nine years.
Surviving are his widow; three sons, P.W. Hansen, Leon, W.R. Hansen, Leon, and A.R. Hansen, El Dorado; two brothers, Elmer Hansen, Forest Grove, Ore.; and Howard Hansen, Adams, Neb.; a sister, Mrs. Grave Sim, Rosebury, Ore.; and 12 grandchildren.

HANSEN SERVICES ARE HELD AT LEON
Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon from the Leon Christian church for Russell Hansen, Anderson, Mo., a former resident of Leon, who died Saturday. Rev. John C. Faust, pastor, officiated and burial was made in the Quito cemetery northeast of Leon.
Pallbearers were D.R. Holt, E.G. Mathew, John Nixon, Arthur Pickrell, Elza Pickrell and J.M. Ward.
Processional and recessional music was played by Mrs. Harold Jones. A mixed quartet, Miss Carole Cabeen, Miss Mary Lou Ireland, Don DeHoff and Don Lamb, sang "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Take It to the Lord In Prayer." The accompanist was Marilyn Chamberlain.

Mrs. Haines was born Jan. 2, 1912 in Neodesha, the daughter of William Wesley and Harriet Estelle (Heddick) Daniel. She had lived in the Rosalia and El Dorado areas most of her life. In 1934 she married Van E. Haines. Mrs. Haines was a homemaker. She had attended the Christian Church and was active in the Butler County Senior Citizens Center.

Earl M. Holladay, 81, of 328 Diagonal Road, died Tuesday night at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kirby-Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow the services in Walnut Valley Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Holladay was born Dec. 31, 1902, the son of Harmon A. and Elizabeth Wilkerson Holladay, in Guthrie, Mo. On May 24, 1922, he was married to Hala Will Hendricks in Fulton, Mo.
Mr. Holladay came to Kansas in 1922 to work for the Empire Oil and Gas Co. He was employed by the company for more than 44 years as a pumper and retired in 1967. Mr. Holladay had lived in El Dorado since April of the year, coming here from Peabody.
Survivors include his wife, Hala Will, of the home; two daughters, Helen McNary, Rural Route 4, El Dorado, and Betty Lanman, Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Nova Twibel, El Dorado; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

B. LUCILLE HUNTER SERVICES MONDAY
B. Lucille Hunter, 64, of Austin, Texas, died Thursday morning at her home. Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will follow the services in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Burns.
She was born April 25, 1920 at El Dorado, the daughter of John and Maude Smalley Stackley. She had made her home in Austin for the past nine years, moving there from Omaha, Neb., where she lived for 19 years. She worked in marketing and real estate. She was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church and S.K.A.L.
She was married to Charles Hunter, and he preceded her in death in 1955.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Russell) Peters of Austin; three brothers, Ralph Stackley and Frank (Nick) Stackley, both of El Dorado, and Ted Stackley of Newton; three sisters, Ruby Norris of St. John, Kan., Mildred Fowler of Salina and Rosemary Jones of El Dorado; and two grandchildren, Charlene and Alisha Peters, both of Austin.

CAR, TRAIN CRASH KILLS 2 STUDENTS
Two Butler County Community College students were killed early Friday when their car slammed into a Burlington Northern freight train and caught fire at a crossing six miles east of Augusta.
Dead are the driver, Jamie Holder, 20, Rose Hill, and Darren D. White, 21, El Dorado.
"It's awful quiet at Butler County today," Everett Kohls, school registrar, said Friday.
Kohls said Mr. White, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., was to be a starting quarterback this fall for the Grizzlies football team at the college in El Dorado.
Mr. Holder, a freshman liberal arts student who graduated from Rose Hill High School, was trying out for the baseball team, Kohls said.
Authorities said the accident occurred about 3:25 a.m. Friday, about one-fourth mile north of U.S. 54 and Haverhill Road.
The car they were riding in, traveling an estimated 60 mph, was southbound on Haverhill Road when it struck the eastbound train, which was going about 20 mph, said a sheriff's dispatcher.
"The car struck the first engine on the train and burst into flames," the dispatcher said.
Services for Mr. White are pending.
Services for Mr. Holder will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Haysville. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Holder, Rose Hill; sisters, Mrs. Jerry Lindbloom of Rose Hill and Tammy Holder of Wichita; grandparents, Viola Holder of Evansville, Ind., Rudolph B. James of Grove, Okla., and Edna E. James of Rose Hill.
A memorial has been established in Mr. Holder's memory with the youth program of the First Baptist Church in Haysville.

FUNERAL TOMORROW FOR BEN HARADER
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Cassoday for
Ben Harader, who died Thursday afternoon. Mr. Harader, who is a mail carrier out of Cassoday, died from concussion
of the brain caused from injuries sustained when he was struck on the right side of the head by a ball thrown in
a practice game.
Mr. Harader had carried mail out of Cassoday for five years. He formerly lived in El Dorado and worked in D. W.

Ben M. Harader was born at Mt. Vernon, S. D., April 6, 1892. He moved when a child with his parents to Chase Co.,
Kansas. He had lived in Kansas practically all of his life except five years which were spent in Southern Missouri
for his health. The past nine years he had lived in Cassoday, where he served as a carrier on a rural mail route
until his death, May 29, 1924.
Mr. Harader enlisted in the aviation corps during the World War. He was the Third Company, First Battalion, 164th
Spruce division. He served from June, 1918, to January 22, 1919. He was kind, genial and patriotic and was esteemed
and loved by all who knew him.
Mr. Harader was married June 12, 1921 to Miss Nina L. Clark, of Cassoday. Two children were born to this union,
Wilford Clark and Arlene Lucile. He is survived by his widow, children, parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ami Harader, of Cassoday,
four sisters, Mrs. Ada McKensie, of Tonganoxie; Mrs. Jennie Bell, of Yakima, Wash.; Mrs. Mabel Thorton, of Bellingham,
Wash.; Mrs. Blanche Vinson, of Clements; and three brothers, J. A. Harader, of Pocatello, Idaho; W. E. Harader,
of Burns and J. W. Harader, Eminclane, Wash.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev. Alvin W. Murray, of Cassoday. The members of the Marion
Sidner Legion, of Burns, participated in the services. Interment was in the Cassoday Cemetery.

A. N. Henry Dies at Home in Leon
Death Comes to Well Known Resident of Butler County Early Last Evening
Andrew Nelson Henry, aged 80 years, for 28 years a widely known and influential resident of El Dorado and for the
past 24 years a resident of Leon, died at 6:25 o'clock last night at his home in Leon, succumbing to pneumonia.
Mr. Henry had been in failing health several years. For the past two weeks, his condition had just been serious.
Funeral services will be held in the Christian Church at Leon, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev.
Ray Baker, pastor of the Christian Church, of Augusta. The Masons will have charge at the cemetery. Interment will
be made in the West Cemetery of El Dorado, beside William Henry, a son who died in Kansas City, Mo., in 1931.
Pallbearers will include Hiram Dedrick, Christopher Doughtery, Arley Kistler, Lee, Kiser and W. C. Meredith of
Leon.
The Byrd Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Henry who was for 30 years identified with the bridge and building department of the Missouri Pacific Railway
Company in El Dorado served for years here as a member of the El Dorado City Council and also as a member of the
Board of Education. For eight years, he had been a member of the Little Walnut Township Board.
Mr. Henry was a member of the Christian Church of Leon and of the Masonic Lodge - the Joppa Lodge Number 223 of
Leon and the Consistory at Wichita. He also was a member of the A. O. U. W. lodge of El Dorado. He came to El Dorado
in 1885 and the family resided here at 314 North Vine Street. The family moved to Leon November 11, 1911.
Mr. Henry was of splendid character and one of the most likable of men. He had a host of friends in Butler County
who share the deep sorrow of the bereaved family. He was born September 2, 1855, in Parkersburg, West Virginia,
lived for several years in Ottuma, Ia., and came to western Kansas in September of 1879. He located in what now
is St. Johns (Kansas) and he was the first man to secure a marriage certificate in that town, when, on August 28,
1881, he was married to Hannah Waller, who survives him. Mr. Henry was the son of William F. and Malinda (McRitchie)
Henry.
Mr. Henry is survived by Mrs. Henry an their two sons, Roy C. Henry of El Dorado, Ralph E. Henry of Leon, and one
daughter, Mrs. Treva Henry Bush, 612 North Broadview, Wichita, six grandsons, George Henry of Denver, John Donald
and Jimmie Bush of Wichita and Jack and Kent Henry of Denver. He also is survived by a brother, Oren W. Henry of
Williamstown, West. Va., and three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Stewart and Mrs. J. W. Jones of St. Petersburg, Fla., and

Funeral services for Andrew Nelson Henry, well known resident of Leon, who died at his home Friday night of pneumonia,
were held at the Leon Christian Church yesterday afternoon with Rev. Ray Baker officiating.
The love and respect in which the aged Leon man was held was indicated by the large number of friends and relatives
attending the services and the abundance of floral offerings which were in evidence.
A mixed quartet composed of Mrs. H. C. Dedrick, Mr. and Mrs. Will Marshal and John Marshall, sang "Beautiful
Garden of Prayers," "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," and "The Old Rugged Cross." Mrs. Will
Marshall and Mrs. Dedrick also sang "In the Garden." They were accompanied by Mrs. Anita Souders.
Pallbearers were H. c. Dedrick, Charles Doughty, Arlin Kistler, John Dixon, W. C. Meredith, and John Nixon. Members
of Joppa Lodge No. 223 at Leon had charge of Masonic services at the grave in West Cemetery. The Byrd Funeral Home

Last rites for Roy C. Henry, who died here last Wednesday were held yesterday afternoon at the Byrd Funeral Home.
Dr. Charles A. Jupin, pastor of the Christian Church, officiated. Interment was made in Sunset Lawns cemetery.
Pallbearers included John Dauber, E. G. Kistler, John Grange, Jack E. Henry, John H. Bush and Don W. Bush.
Members of the carpenter's union, local No. 2278 of the A. F. of L., attended in a group and were in charge of
services at the grace. Mrs. Fred Burr played and sang "Going Down the Valley," and "Nearer My God

HOLCOMB, DONNA E.
Donna E. Holcomb, 97, of El Dorado, died Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at Golden Living Center in El Dorado. Graveside
services are 2 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2007, at Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
She was born March 23, 1910 at Eminence, Mo. Donna was a tailor by profession and had worked at Fashion Cleaners.
She was a member of Prospect Baptist Church. She was married to Enoch Barton and pre preceded her in death. She
later married Coleman Dean Holcomb and he also preceded her in death in 1987.
Survivors include: son, Euwal Barton of El Dorado, daughter, Geraldine (Bonnie) Stanley of Edmond, Okla., five
grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister and six brothers.

Caleb E. Harper, 99, of El Dorado, died Dec. 18, 1995 at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m.
Friday at Carlson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
He was born May 31, 1896 at Corridon, Mo., the son of Sim and Pauline Davis Harper. He spent most of his life in
this area and worked for Local Union 171 as a pipefitter. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene;
Willing Workers Sunday School class. On July 11, 1917 he married Anna Maude Dickerson at Bunker, Mo. She preceded
him in death on August 19, 1989.
Survivors include a son Calip Harper of Wichita, daughters, Cleo Lippincott of Wichita, Carmen Albright of Anthony
and Carneese Rogers of Augusta; brother Sam Harper of El Dorado, sisters Bonnie Ritchey of Hutchinson, Donna Holcomb
of El Dorado, 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers.

Maude Harper, age 88, El Dorado, died early Thursday morning, Aug. 10, 1989, at Knutson Manor Nursing Center. Service:

She was born July 29, 1901 at Winona, Mo., the daughter of Peter P. and Sarah R. Williams Dickerson. She married
Caleb Harper, July 11, 1917 in a ceremony at Bunker, Mo. The couple celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary in
July.
She was a homemaker and had lived in El Dorado since 1922. In 1943, they moved to Ava, Mo., returning to El Dorado
around 1960. She was a member of the First Church of Nazarene, and Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
Survivors, husband, Caleb of the home, son Calip Emmett (Cal) Harper, of Wichita, three daughters, Mrs. Cleo Lippincott
of Wichita, Mrs. Carmen Albright of Anthony; Mrs. Carneese Rogers of Augusta, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren,
seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Curtis and two brothers.

HARPER, GEORGE A.
George A. Harper, 85, of 707 Benton, died Sunday afternoon at a local nursing home. Services will be held at 2
p.m. Wednesday at Carlson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Walnut Valley Memorial Park.
He was born Jan. 7, 1898 at Bunker, Mo., the son of Sims Allen and Pauline Davis Harper. He was a carpenter until
retiring in 1963. He moved to El Dorado 49 years ago from Lockwood, Mo. He was a member of the Assembly of God
Church.
On Oct. 4, 1919, he married Alva Smallen in a ceremony at Gladden, Mo. She preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Paul Harper of Stillwater, Okla., four daughters, Georgia (Mrs. Ted) McHugh of El
Dorado, Imogene (Mrs. S. A.) Mahan, Jr., of Towanda, Mrs. Bessie Biles of El Dorado and Dottie Lou (Mrs. Dallas)
Joyce of El Dorado; three brothers, Caleb of El Dorado, Clarence of Augusta, and Sam of Hollister, Mo.; two sisters,
Bonnie Ritchey and Donna Holcomb of El Dorado and 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Minnie Hazel; and two brothers. (El Dorado Times, April 18, 1983)
